Harvey Roe Sweeney, a beacon of inspiration and a pillar of the Tallahassee and Chattahoochee communities, completed his remarkable journey here on earth at the age of 90 on May 17, 2024. Born in Tallahassee, FL on February 22, 1934, to the late Nelson Isaiah and Lillie Mae Goings Sweeney, Harvey's life was a testament to the power of dedication, love, and service. He had a deep love for family and faith. His faith was strong and no doubt he is with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Harvey's story began in the halls of Caroline Brevard Elementary and Leon High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. His prowess on the baseball and football fields earned him accolades, including the first-ever Tallahassee Quarterback Club Sportsmanship award and a spot on the 1st team All-Conference. His legacy was cemented in 2006 with his induction into the Leon High School Baseball Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to a man who played the game of life with equal passion. Harvey's journey continued at Florida State University, where he balanced his studies with baseball, playing for the Tallahassee Capitals, which would become the backdrop for meeting his lifelong love, Jeanette, in 1953. The following year, Harvey joined the FSU baseball team and lettered in 1955. In 1956, Harvey and Jeanette were married in Chattahoochee, FL; their love story was one for the ages, culminating in a marriage that spanned nearly seven decades. Together, they welcomed four children into the world, each a reflection of Harvey's playfulness and Jeanette's grace. Harvey graduated from Florida State University in 1957 with a BS Degree in business. Harvey was a member of Emanuel Baptist, Fellowship Baptist, Tallahassee Heights United Methodist and Chattahoochee Presbyterian Church through his years of which he served in many capacities. Harvey's professional life as a CPA, was as diverse as it was impactful. From his early days at FSU to his final position with the State of Florida Board of Regents. His promotion to Chief Internal Auditor in 1983 marked a significant milestone in his career. Harvey's love for baseball continued as he coached Babe Ruth and served as President of the Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth league, earning a place in their Hall of Fame. Over the years, Harvey served as a president of the Tallahassee Quarterback Club, Leon High Band Parents, and Lincoln High Chorus Parents Association and was a Co-Scout Master. His leadership extended to various organizations, always with a focus on supporting and uplifting others. As a Shriner and Mason, Harvey's selfless nature found expression in his dedication to helping children and their families. His efforts to transport them to hospitals for treatment were acts of his quiet generosity. Retirement for Harvey after 33 years of working was not an end but a new beginning. He and Jeanette built their dream home at the farm, a sanctuary where family, friends, and nature provides joyous memories.
