Obituary of James Allen Messinese Published by legacy.com Surrounded by his loved ones, James Allen Messinese peacefully passed away at his home on Sunday evening, April 22, 2018. Jimmy was born in Washington D.C. on January 23, 1932. When he was 15 years old, he moved to Jacksonville Beach, Florida, where he enrolled in Fletcher High School as a 10th grader. Jimmy immediately became fully involved with sports, playing football, basketball and baseball. Following high school, Jimmy was a scholarship athlete for Florida State University where he played football, graduating in April 1955. Among other accolades he received while at FSU, he was named to the 1953 “Little All-American” team, and in 1954 signed a contract with the NFL Baltimore Colts. After playing a short time in the 1955 pre-season, Jimmy was called to serve in the US Army where he served with the 101st Airborne. After serving in Germany and on the Austrian/Hungarian border, Jimmy was honorably discharged and returned home to Jacksonville Beach to teach and coach at Fletcher High School. In 1958 Jimmy married Sylvia Oesterreicher, the love of his life. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just days before he passed. Years later, Jimmy was the business manager and athletic director at Beaches Chapel School and Church where he also took on the duties as the high school basketball coach. Over the years, the young men that he had coached and mentored often returned to pay their respect to their beloved coach. James Allen Messinese lived his life by a code: Honor your parents, love, protect and provide for your wife and children, defend the defenseless, encourage the discouraged, and foster the hopes and aspirations of the young people in your life. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia, and their five children: Dr. Mark Messinese (Debbie), Mary Lee Weeks (John), Jeanmarie Jackson (Eric), James H. Messinese (Kathy), Christopher Messinese (Sharleen), his sister, Shirley Mucci, and eleven grandchildren: Chloe, Benjamin, Yves, Melissa, Mackenzie, Camille, Dalton, Jared, Michael, Jessica and Jacob.
