Obituary for Stanley E Dobosz Published by White Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Griffith, Ind. GRIFFITH, Ind. - Stanley Dobosz, 89, of Griffith, went home to God on Monday, December 27, 2021, peacefully in his sleep. Stan is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Bonnie, daughter Anajean Lewis, and son Michael (Kathy) Dobosz. He is also survived by his grandchildren Mark (Rachel) Lewis, Lindsay Lewis, Michael (Marris) Dobosz, and Abbey Dobosz; great-granddaughter Raegan Lewis and numerous nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Stan was preceded in death by his parents Mike and Anna Dobosz, son Andy Dobosz, son-in-law Mark Lewis Sr., and siblings infant Stanislaus Dobosz, Edward (Rocky) Dobosz, Mary Cichon, Josephine Sojka, Frances Miller, Jenny Kapera, Helen Mulvihill, and Irene Kocal. Stan was born to first generation Polish immigrant parents on Friday, August 12, 1932. He attended St. Stan's Elementary School and was a graduate of East Chicago Roosevelt High School in 1950. Stan attended Florida State University and graduated in 1958 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. During college, he served three years in the United States Army in Germany, Austria and Italy before earning an honorable discharge. Stan was employed by the U.S. Postal Service, NIPSCO, American Steel Foundries, and Inland Steel until his retirement in 1992. Stan was a civic leader and thoroughly dedicated to the Town of Griffith. He was elected to the Town Council's 5th ward for 40 years. He sat on, and often chaired, the safety/police boards, BZA, and Plan Commission. Stan served on Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission and the Indiana Law Enforcement Training Board. He was an usher and devout parishioner of St. Mary Church. He was a founding member of the Griffith Park Full of Art. Stan was a Chicago Honor Flight recipient. He was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Griffith Safety Board. November 1, 2021 was declared "Stan Dobosz Day" in Griffith. Stan was also an elite athlete, coach and mentor. At 15 years old, he played fast pitch softball in East Chicago with several returning veterans from WWII. He was an All State fullback with the Pete Rucinski-lead state champion Roosevelt Rough Rider Football team. Stan was the fullback, kick returner and place kicker for the Florida State Seminoles in 1951, 1952 and 1956, 1957. He is an inductee of the East Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame and in 2019 Stan was inducted into the Indiana State Football Hall of Fame. Stan played and coached PRCU basketball and coached St. Mary - Griffith basketball, Griffith Babe Ruth baseball and Calumet Steelers semi-pro football. Stan was the youngest of nine children and was an excellent example of a person raised by a diverse but tight-knit community. The families on Northcote near Kosciuszko Park shared responsibilities for each other and their children - keeping watch and teaching hard life lessons that instilled in Stan the toughness, loyalty and street smarts he carried with him literally until his dying day. Stan loved God and he loved life. He loved his family and he loved the amazing friendships that he and Bonnie forged over the years from East Chicago to Tallahassee to Griffith. Stan loved the Town of Griffith and was fiercely protective of it for decades. He devoted countless hours agonizing over issues such as clean drinking water, level sidewalks, efficient storm sewers, safe railroad crossings, beautiful parks, low taxes, dependable streets and hiring qualified police officers. The essence of Stan was his honesty and his leadership. He
always led...from being a 15 year old catcher and clean up hitter among
WWII vets, to calling plays in the huddle for his FSU football team, to
chairing or being president of community boards, councils and booster
clubs. Whether he was playing husband, father or grandfather -
businessman, council member, bouncer or fullback - Stan was a magnificent
blend of so many positive traits he shared with everyone he met. To us,
Stan was Bonnie's darling sweetheart and hero, as well as AJ and Michael's
dad and best friend. He was the consummate doting and playful Dzia Dzia
and the funny and dependable Uncle Tarzan. He will be sorely missed. Sto
lat! Sto lat! Narrative when Stan Dobosz was inducted into the Indiana State Football Hall of Fame. Stan Dobosz is the youngest of eight children born to his first-generation Polish immigrant parents, Michael and Anna Dobosz. Michael and Anna raised their family in a two bedroom house in East Chicago, Indiana. Mike worked as a pipefitter at Combustion Engineering and Anna was a homemaker. Stan was born in 1932. Being a member of a large family during the Depression did not offer many luxuries. Luckily, Stan slept three to a bed rather than four to a bed, as his other unlucky siblings did. While the 1930s were difficult times, Northcote Avenue in East Chicago was teeming with extremely strong close-knit immigrant families who stuck together and looked out for each other and each other's children. As Stan was growing up, he picked up the nickname "Tarzan". Everybody called him Tarzan because of his early athletic physique and because he would scamper around the neighborhood wearing shorts with no shirt. He resembled Actor Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan the Apeman. As a matter of fact, after Anna gave birth to Stan in their Northcote house the doctor asked Mike and Anna if he could adopt Stan because he was so healthy and they had seven other children. They politely declined. Growing up, Stan attended St. Stanislaus Catholic Elementary School and would spend his time playing Kiwanis baseball for the Southside Cubs in nearby Kosciuszko Park. When Stan was an underclassman at Roosevelt High School, he began to stray. By that time it was 1945 and World War II had finally come to an end. Soldiers were coming home. Returning soldiers from the neighborhood formed social clubs and recruited Stan to play on their fast pitch softball teams which were very competitive. At 15 years old, Stan played catcher and hit clean-up for these teams and began spending more time at Club Apache than he would going to school. At 16, he played with Club Coloma, then Nipsco...the best fast pitch softball teams in the City. Stan's street smarts were clearly exceeding his book smarts. His version of a "Bronx Tale" had to end. Stan needed to be saved. Stan's life changed forever when a truant officer introduced him to Pete Rucinski (HOF), head coach of the East Chicago Roosevelt High School Rough Riders football team. Coach Rucinski immediately recognized Stan's size and athletic ability, but more importantly he was in the business of saving young lives. By now Stan was a junior in high school and Coach Rucinski persuaded him to go to school and try out for the football team his senior year. When he hit the gridiron that fall, Stan's transformation was purely phenomenal. With Coach Rucinski's guidance, Stan's animal instincts and athleticism kicked in and he immediately catapulted to the starting line up along side fellow inductee Bill Holzbach. He was a raging bull...a Rough Rider incarnate. In his senior year, the only year he played high school football, Stan played both ways, was named All State and helped lead the Roosevelt football team to the Indiana state championship. Because of his stellar senior year and Coach Rucinski's contacts, Stan was heavily recruited by Division I colleges from coast to coast. But two schools stood out...the University of Kentucky and Florida State University. Stan chose Kentucky, primarily because he was persuaded by UK's head coach, Paul (Bear) Bryant. However, in Lexington later that summer, Stan had a falling out with Bear Bryant, primarily because of the intolerable conditions of the preseason training camp. Although the Bear tried to persuade him otherwise, the men shook hands and Stan formally transferred to Florida State, who honored their previous scholarship offer. So Stan hitchhiked to Tallahassee, Florida, began classes in the fall and joined his new teammates for FSU spring football in early 1952. Stan played his freshman year at FSU under Head Coach Don Veller. Coach Veller ran the single wing, similar to Coach Rucinski. In current parlance, the single wing was a perpetual wildcat offense with the occasional use of a quarterback. Stan quickly earned his way to the starting line up as a freshman and led FSU in rushing, averaging 4.2 yards per carry. He also happened to be the team's place kicker, kicking extra points and field goals. During his sophomore year, Stan played under newly hired Head Coach Tom Nugent, who was the inventor of the I-formation, which utilized a true quarterback. Consequently, Stan's sophomore season was less prolific than his first because Coach Nugent incorporated the forward pass and often utilized Stan as a decoy. After his sophomore year, Stan was drafted into the United States Army and spent the next two years overseas. Stan has the unique distinction of equally splitting his college football career around a two year tour in the Army. After his honorable discharge, Stan returned to FSU in the fall of 1956 to complete his junior year and rejoined the football team under scholarship and his GI Bill. In his junior year, Stan mostly played halfback but also returned kickoffs, punted, returned punts, and also kicked extra points and field goals. It was these latter two years at FSU that Stan met and became close with many luminous friends. He played side by side with Actor Buddy (Burt) Reynolds, the legendary Lee Corso, and the Actor Paul Gleason. He also ran around with New York Yankee Manager Dick Howser and Division I basketball coach Hugh Durham. Stan was clearly having a blast. Stan's most prolific year was his senior year in 1957. He still played halfback but now excelled in returning kickoffs. At one point, Stan led the nation in average kickoff return yardage. He ended the season as national runner-up. Amazingly, Stan also was a starting defensive cornerback his senior year, grabbing an interception and becoming a team leader in tackles. He played both ways all season. Perhaps most impressive was his leadership. He was a coach on the field. During the last seven games of his senior year, Stan was the sole signal caller for the Seminole offense. Stan completed his career at FSU with the distinction of being the leading ground gainer during the entire decade of the 1950s. Undoubtedly, however, Stan's greatest accomplishment in his senior year was meeting a freshman co-ed named Bonnie Jean Brinkley, his wife of 62 years. Stan and Bonnie were married shortly after Stan graduated from FSU. They lived for a while in Tallahassee and Cocoa Beach but moved back home to Northwest Indiana around 1960. Stan and Bonnie first settled in East Chicago where Stan worked for Nipsco. At that time, Stan was asked to coach the Calumet Steelers, a semi-pro team out of East Chicago which played in the Central States Football League. Stan was soon named head coach and immediately recruited Ted Topor (HOF) as his line coach. The team played well and had a successful season. Shortly thereafter, Stan moved his family to Griffith where he has lived for the past 55 years. Stan and Bonnie have three children, Anajean, Andy, and Michael, four grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. Stan has been retired for 25 years, having worked at American Steel Foundries and Inland Steel for over 40 years. Most notably, Stan has been a leader in his community. He served as a Town Councilman for 38 years. He loves Griffith. He served as President of the Griffith High School 500 Club, a fundraising club for Griffith football during the 1980s and 1990s. Even now, at 86 years old, Stan serves on the Town of Griffith Safety Board and Plan Commission. He is a member of Griffith's St. Mary Church and attends church regularly. It took a
football village to raise Stan. Football provided a compass which guided
him to what he truly values the most...God, his family and his
community. |
