Nathaniel William Polak Obituary. Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on Oct 21, 1995, page 26. Nathaniel Polak, board chairman at JCKC, dies. Polak, who played football at FSU, also was a member of the Tallahassee Jaycees and the Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce. By Keith Charity, Democrat writer. Nathaniel William Polak, a successful Tallahassee insurance executive, former Florida State University football player and Chairman of the Board of the Jefferson County Kennel Club in Monticello, died Friday. He was 63. Born in New York City, Polak came to Tallahassee in 1951 on a football scholarship to FSU, where he lettered in 1951 and 1952. Former Florida State football coach Don Veller recalled Polak as "a scrapper ... and a good football player who had a lot of confidence in himself." Polak was owner of Nat Polak Insurance Agency on Ramond Diehl Road in Tallahassee, which was started with a $300 loan from attorney Leonard Pepper. Polak also was owner/president of U.S. Legal Protection Co. Polak first served as director of the Jefferson County Kennel Club and for the past 20 years had been its Chairman of the Board. He was a substantial stockholder in the dog track. "He was one of the greatest people in the world," said Steve Andris, owner of JCKC. "He was just a great, great person. He really helped a lot of people." Polak was a member of the Tallahassee Jaycees and the Tallahassee Area Chamber of Commerce, was a Mason and a member of The Church of the Advent. Polak also had political aspirations. In 1966, he finished a distant third in the primary election for a state House seat. For many years, he raised thousands of dollars to boost the political fortunes of others, including former House Speaker Donald Tucker and former Attorney General Robert Shevin. Polak said he "got the bug" to run for office again after serving on the state Constitution Revision Commission in 1977 and 1978. This led to an unsuccessful run for city commissioner in 1980. He also was a member of the Florida Public Service Commission nominating council. He
is survived by his wife, Barbara Herring Polak of Tallahassee; a son,
Michael William Pollack of Tallahassee; a daughter, Victoria Snedeker of
Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Rita Jones of Tallahassee; and two
grandchildren. |
