August John "Augie" Pompelia, 71, of Indiana, died Tuesday, Feb. 15, 1994, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. The son of August and Mary Marcoline Pompelia, he was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Sagamore. He was a member of St. Bernard of Clairvaux Roman Catholic Church, Indiana. Mr. Pompelia was a member of VFW Post 1989 of Indiana; the Sports Hall of Fame in Indiana and Armstrong counties; the PSEA, the NEA and the Florida State Alumni Association. A 1952 graduate of Florida State University, he was captain of the baseball team there for two years. He earned his master's degree in education at IUP in 1959. He was employed as a teacher at Marion Center Area High School and was director of community services for 30 years. After his retirement he was employed part-time at Giant Eagle in Indiana. Surviving are his wife, Juli Bohan Pompelia, whom he married in 1956; one son, August J., Indiana; one daughter, Mrs. Jeffrey (Heather) Stitely, Jefferson, Md.; one stepson, Michael Melcher, Miami, Fla.; two grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Laura Longwill, LaHabra, Calif,; Mrs. John (Ann) Leone, Bedford Heights, Ohio; Mrs. Nunzio (Sarah) Pinizzotto, Maples Heights, Ohio; Mrs. Thomas (Ginnie) O'Donnell, Naperville, Ohio; and Mrs. Louis (Mary Etta) Maralli, Garfield Heights, Ohio; five brothers, William, Yatesboro; Emmett (Geno), Meridian, Miss,; Donald "Chi." Warren, Ohio; Dominic "Bicky" Strongsville, Ohio; and Charles, Home. He was preceded in death by his
parents and one brother, Samuel. |
