Earl Lamar O'Neal Obituary. Published by findagrave.com. Conyers Democrat State Rep. Earl "Coach" O'Neal, a retired educator and coach died Tuesday at the age of 71. He had been battling prostate cancer for about 10 years. State Rep. O'Neal was born in Valdosta on July 20, 1928, the youngest of 12 children. He played football at Valdosta High School under the legendary coach Wright Bazemore. After graduation, he attended South Georgia Junior College on a full scholarship, helping lead the team to a national No. 1 ranking for junior colleges. He then played for Florida State University as a tackle, twice earning Most Valuable Player honors. He graduated in 1953 with a degree in physical education. He served in the Army military police for two years, including a stint in France. O'Neal then attended George Peabody College in Nashville, graduating with a degree in education administration. It was there he met his wife, Glenn Ann Keith, whom he married in 1958. He coached Dublin High School for two years, then in Waycross from 1959 to 1965, winning state championships in 1960 and 1961. He was voted Georgia's Coach of the Year in 1960. In 1965, O'Neal moved to Rockdale High School as head coach and athletic director. In 1974, he became principal of Main Street Middle School, and then principal of Conyers Middle School. In 1985, Conyers Middle School was named a state School of Excellence and a National School of Excellence. He retired in 1987, but in 1992 he ran successfully for the state House of Representatives. He was a member of Georgia state house of representatives 75th District, 1993-2000. He is survived by his wife, Glenn Ann; a son,
Earl Jr. of Charlotte; daughters Keith Ann Stone of Decatur and Katy
Arrowood of Athens; three brothers, Charles O'Neal, Lonnie O'Neal and Glenn
O'Neal of Valdosta; four sisters, Thelma Grant and Mattie Lou Schroeder of
Valdosta, Lena Bennett of Jacksonville and Emily Teagle of Warner Robins;
and four grandchildren. |
