27, 2003. He is survived by his wife of 51 years.
A fourth-generation
Floridian, he was born in Bakers Mill on Feb. 20, 1927, to Herman Leslie
High Sr. and Leona Webb High. He was raised in Jacksonville and moved to
Tallahassee in 1970. He retired in 1987 after 30 years of service with the
state of Florida. He worked for the State Board of Health in Jacksonville
and the Department of Pollution Control and the Department of Environmental
Regulation in Tallahassee. He was in personnel and administrative services.
He played football at Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville and
received football scholarships to South Georgia College in Douglas, Ga.,
and Erskine College in Due West, S.C. In 1950, he was a member of the
Florida State University football team. He was a member of Sigma Alpha
Epsilon fraternity.
He received his bachelor's degree in 1951 in social
science from Erskine College and a master's degree in psychology from
Florida State University in 1954. A veteran of World War II, he served in
the Marine Corps.
Leslie High was a 33 degree Mason of 50 years with the
Temple Lodge in Jacksonville and a member of the Scottish Rite and the
Marzuq Temple of Tallahassee. He was a chairman of the Masonic legislative
breakfasts for many years. He was a past member of Springtime Tallahassee,
Antebellum Krewe, where he served as chairman of the Springtime Tallahassee
parade, and also co-chaired Gov. Bob Martinez's inaugural parade.
He was
a member of the Florida State University Alumni Association and a past
member of the Varsity Club of Florida State. He was also a member of
Goodwood and the Tallahassee Symphony Society. He was a member of St.
John's Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry and as head usher for
many years.
He is also survived by two daughters, Karen "Kara" High of
Tallahassee and Kristen High Sears (and husband Christian David Sr.); and
three grandchildren, Christian David, Hannah High and Parker Willis Sears
of Howey In The Hills; a sister, Charlotte High Parker (and husband William
"Bill" M.) of Tarpon Springs; five nieces; and a nephew of Clearwater.
