Obituary for Bill C. Driver Published in saukvalley.com in June 1, 2016 LAKE TOXAWAY, N.C. – Bill Clinton Driver, 87, of Lake Toxaway, formerly of Oregon, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 10, 2016, in Brevard, North Carolina, after a brief illness. A standout athlete and scholar at Blue Island High School, now Eisenhower High School in Illinois, he attended Indiana University on an athletic scholarship, playing quarterback and end from 1946 to 1949. The Florida State University Football program recruited him from IU in 1950, where he anchored the Seminoles’ first undefeated season and was the first quarterback drafted from FSU to the NFL, going to the Cleveland Browns in 1951. The Air Force also drafted him that year, and he went on to serve a 23-year career in the U.S. Air Force, including tours in Japan, England, Korea, and at bases across the U.S. as a fighter pilot, flight instructor, and base administrator, retiring in 1974 at the rank of lieutenant colonel. Col. Driver flew combat missions in Vietnam and completed an exchange assignment with the British Royal Air Force that took him to India, Cyprus, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Thailand, and Australia. Upon his retirement from the Air Force, he embarked upon a career as a Professional Golf Association golf professional, serving as a club pro, PGA rules official, and as executive director of the Illinois Section of the PGA. He always was good for an impromptu lesson and generously shared his knowledge with PGA pros, championship golfers, and duffers alike. He earned degrees from FSU (a Bachelor of Arts) and Northern Illinois University (Master of Education). The most important relationship of his life was with his wife, Diane Knott Driver. They were married in 1954, and saw the world together, raising four children, and retiring to Oregon, and then to Lake Toxaway, before she preceded him in death in 2002. Col. Driver is survived by his children, Bryan (Steve) Hollewell of Milledgeville, Vickie (Bart Goynshor) of Chicago, Randy (Corinne) of Lake Toxaway, and Russ (Lynn) of Pisgah Forrest, North Carolina; and beloved grandchildren, Evan (Jess) and Dean Hollewell, Rachel (Corey) Tritt, Emma (Casey Brown) Driver, and Callie and Chris Driver.
