Obituary for Philip H. Alvers Published by Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home
Philip H. Alvers was born in Pomona Park, FL on July 24, 1931, the son of
Ben and Natha Alvers. He died on July 17, 2017 in Palatka, FL. A descendant
of Florida pioneer William Cone Alvarez-Alvers, his great-grandfather, who
was born in Florida before statehood and served as a Putnam County
commissioner during the period in which the county courthouse and the St.
Johns River bridge were built. He attended Crescent City High School where
he was very active in sports and a member of Beta Club. He received his
Bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and his Master of Education
from the University of Florida. During his career in education, he was the
teaching principal at the 2-teacher San Mateo School, then principal at
Silver Lake Elementary School, now Kelley Smith Elementary School. He was
principal at Moseley Elementary School for many years before moving to
Jenkins Middle School where he ended his career. During his career, he
worked with various committees on both the state and local levels and
served as president of the Putnam County Education Association and the
Putnam County Principal’s Association. He and his wife, Nancy, had two
children. Their daughter, Carol Golden, was music teacher at Moseley
Elementary for many years before retiring. Their son, Philip Jr., is a
financial consultant in Douglasville, GA. Active in community affairs, he
served as president and member of the Azalea City Kiwanis Club. He was a
member of the Putnam County Chamber of Commerce and the Palatka Men’s Golf
Association. He was president of the Greater Palatka Beautification
Council, and with Dr. Fred Griffin, he spearheaded the Waterfront project.
A member of the Putnam County Hunters Association, he received many civic
awards and recommendations from organizations such as the Elks Club. He
served for many years as cook for barbecues for the Kiwanis Club and
Browning Pearce Community School. He was also on the Crescent City High
School Reunion Planning Committee for many years. After his retirement, he
wrote a historical fiction novel, The Other Side of the River, now
available on Kindle. His book is now being published by C.E. Painter
Publishing Company in DeLeon Springs. He was preceded in death by his
parents, Ben and Natha Alvers, his brothers Earl Dewitt and Bennie Alvers,
Jr. and his sister, Eva Middleton. Survivors include his wife, Nancy,
daughter, Carol Golden, son and daughter-in-law, Philip and Kathy Dancy
Alvers, five grandchildren, Chris Golden, Elena Johns, Alexis Golden,
Amanda Young and Davis Alvers. He has 13 great-grandchildren, Caitlyn
Golden, Pacey, Amelia and Dylan Golden, Blythe, Drew and Meredith Johns,
Tyler and Emily Vergara, Audra and Eve Alvers and Bryce and Adeline Young.
Other family members include his sister, Rosemary Combs, and cousins, Irene
Hundley, Joyce Clegg, members of the Jack and Earl Alvers families along
with numerous nephews and nieces.
