Harry Wyant Massey Obituary. Harry W. Massey, Sr., 70 years old, of West
Palm Beach, FL, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, after an extended illness.
Born March 7, 1932 in Forest, MS, he was the son of Jesse and Virginia
Allen Massey. He was a graduate of the Canton High School, Canton, MS,
Class of 1950. In 1951, he served as Instructor at the N.C.O. School for
the U.S. Army and played on the Fort Jackson Football team. He received his
BS Degree in Insurance from Florida State University, Class of 1955. While
at Florida State, he was the quarterback for the Seminoles, setting several
school passing records and leading the team in the 1955 Sun Bowl. He was a
member of the leadership fraternities Omicron Delta Kappa and Gold Key and
the social fraternity, Phi Delta Theta. He was the Senior Class President
and was listed in Who's Who in American Colleges. After college he moved to
West Palm Beach and in 1958 founded the insurance firm of Massey, Clark,
Fischer, Inc. of which he served as chairman. From 1966 until 1984 he was
appointed General Agent for the Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company
and in 1985 was named General Agent Emeritus. He was a Life Member of the
Million Dollar Round Table and was a Past President and Past Board Member
of the Independent Insurance Agents of Palm Beach County. He lobbied in
Washington, D.C. for the Independent Agents Association and for the Florida
Association of Insurance Agents from 1992-2002. He was recognized with the
Lifetime Achievement Award from the FAIA State Legislative Committee. Mr.
Massey was a Past President and 40-year member of the Downtown West Palm
Beach Kiwanis Club; he was a Founding Director of Suburban Bank of Lake
Worth; he was the first President of the Sales and Marketing Executive of
the Palm Beaches; he was a Past Chairman of the Board of the American Heart
Association of Palm Beach County; a former member of the Board of Directors
of the Florida Chamber of Commerce; a past member of the Executive
Committee of Fellowship of Christian Athletes; a Past President of the
National Board of Florida State University Alumni Association; a former
Board Member of the Salvation Army; he served on the Board of Governors for
the Florida Property and Casualty Joint Underwriting Association and
Florida Market Assistance Plan (appointed by Insurance Commissioner
Gallagher); He was a past Board Member and member of the Executive
Committee of the American Cancer Society; he served as Past Board Member
of the United Way of Palm Beach County serving on the original fund raising
committee in 1965 and was the first Chairman for American Free Enterprise
Day; for 30 years he served on the board and was a Past President of the
advisory Board of the Y.M.C.A., and was also a Co-Founder of Y.P.A.L.; and
he was a member of he Palm Beach Republican Club and served on the Board of
Directors from 1999-2000. He was a member of the Sailfish Club of Palm
Beach, a founding member of he Mayacoo Lakes Country Club of West Palm
Beach, a member and Past President of the Phi Delta Theta Alumni
Association and in 1975 was the recipient of the International Award as
Most Outstanding Alumni (selected from 10,000 members). He is survived by
his wife, Sally Hamner Massey; his children, H.W. "Hank" Massey, Jr. (wife,
Tammie), John Michael Massey (wife, Marlo), and Leslie Massey Blackburn
(husband, Billy); and his grandchildren, Jessica Massey, Erin Massey,
Miranda Massey, Blaine Blackburn and Web Blackburn. |
