George Newton Spurling Jr. Obituary. Published by The Miami Herald on Dec 28, 2005, page 33. George N. Spurling Jr., was called home on December 23, 2005. He was born in Miami, Florida on May 17, 1931, he attended Miami Jackson High School and played on the Miami Herald 1947 All City Football Team as a guard. He graduated in 1949. George attended Florida State University and played in the January 1950 Cigar Bowl in Tampa, Florida. He was a brother of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity; and graduated in 1953 with a Bachelors Degree in Biological Science. He honorably served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal. As a pioneering Nurseryman for over 40 years in the South Dade Community, he was well known and respected by many and served his community well. He was a member of the Florida Farm Bureau and the Florida Nurseryman and Growers Association (FNGA). As a committed member of the FNGA, he served in many positions throughout the years and was elected President of the Dade Chapter in 1975, Director of the FNGA Executive Committee in 1988. He received the Babe Greer Memorial Award in 1987. He was honored as an Agricultural Pioneer in 2000. Throughout his life, he was known for his generosity and altruistic philanthropy. He will be greatly missed by his daughters, Theresa A.
Spurling-Wood, Lois S. Bengalio and Frances Roberts, his sister, Gertrude
Lawrence, his ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild. His passing is a
tremendous loss to them all. |
