Mr. Sumter Schubert Powell, Sr., cherished and beloved husband, grandfather and friend, passed away Sunday, January 26, 1997 at the age of 68. Mr. Powell was born June 9, 1928 in Pelham, GA., the fifth of nine children of Claude and Harriett Powell. He attended Pelham High School and graduated from Sarasota High School where he served in student government and on the football team. While attending Georgia Tech he was recalled to active duty as a Naval Aviator. Residing in Atlanta, he worked in the credit field until 1977 when he formed Powell and Associates, Inc., an electrical, heating and air company, and retired in 1991. An Eagle Scout, he worked closely in the past with the Boy Scouts of America as well as taking a very active role in a host of family and community interests. A loving and compassionate man of principle, honesty and laughter, he will be greatly missed by his survivors including his wife, Lula Belle Scott Powell, daughters, Laura Wilson Powell and Sarah Scott Powell, son and daughter in-law, Sumter Schubert Powell, Jr. and Cheryl Sisson Powell, grandchildren, Jessica Leigh Powell, Rebecca Jeanne Poweel, Cory Marcus Powell and 3 brothers and 4 sisters.
