Obituary for Walter Lawrence Foy Jr. Gainesville - Walter Lawrence Foy, Jr., athlete, veteran, husband, father, grandfather, educator and camp director, died peacefully in his home in Gainesville, Florida on Friday, June 14, 2013. Upon graduation from high school Walt played football at Georgia Tech and then during the war he was an artillery instructor at West Point. After completing that assignment he went back to Georgia Tech, but soon decided to attend FSU where he met his future bride, Barbara Fosgate. Walt played football for the Seminoles, starting as quarterback in the 1949 season. Walt's coaching, teaching, education administration, and camp director positions led him and his family to reside in Lake City, Florida, Quitman, Georgia, Dublin, Georgia and at Camp Jocassee in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina. Walt was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Fosgate Foy. He is survived by his children, Brenda Foy Springfield, Bill Foy, Dan Foy, and Miriam Foy Rice; grandchildren, Walt Foy, Jake Springfield, Chase Foy, Tyler Foy, Maura Foy, Mallory Foy, Hunter Rice, and Austin Rice and great grandchildren, Emilee Foy and Will Foy. Walt came to reside in Gainesville during the last
year and a half of his life in order to be near family. He thought
Gainesville was absolutely gorgeous with its majestic live oaks...but
lamented being surrounded by Gators, since he was a Seminole through and
through! |

"Walt" was born July 6, 1927 to
Fontella Padgett Foy and Walter Lawrence Foy, Sr. He grew up in St.
Augustine, Florida. Walt and his brother, Billy, and friends spent much of
their youth on the beaches, in the ruins of the fort, in old town and
fishing and hunting in the woods. Walt played football for the Ketterlinus
High School Mullets and had many fond memories of "old Florida" and his
days as a Mullet. He participated as often as he was able in the monthly
Mullet-Reunion-Breakfasts.
