From the Tallahassee Democrat Originally published March 9, 2008 Original 'Nole Jack Tully dies He was Florida State's first football captain By Steve Ellis DEMOCRAT Senior writer Jack Tully would proudly show visitors to his Tallahassee home the photos depicting his days as a Florida State Seminole. There was one of a young Tully standing at midfield during the coin toss prior to FSU's first football game on Oct. 18, 1947. A photo of that 1947 team hung in an adjoining room. Tully was from one of Wakulla County's pioneer families. It was a perfect fit that he would be part of ground-breaking football team at Florida State. A guard on FSU's first football team, Jack Tully died on Saturday after being diagnosed in January with cancer. "He was all about Florida State," a daughter, Laura, said. Tully played for the Seminoles in 1947 and 1948. According to the book "FSU One Time" he was FSU's first elected captain. He typified the players who joined college football teams around the country after serving their nation in World War II. A graduate of Leon High, he was considered to be a tough guy by his teammates. Don Grant was one of those teammates. "He was a fighter and a leader," Grant said on Saturday. "He was a team person." Tully entered the Navy at 17 and served in France in 1944. From there, he fought in the South Pacific, including Okinawa. After the war, his ship returned to Miami where he set out to play for the University of Miami's football team. At about that time, FSU decided to start its own program during its transition from a women's college. He attended FSU on the GI Bill. There was no scholarship or training table at that time. "To put it bluntly, nobody was scared of each other. We played hard," Tully said in a November interview with the Tallahassee Democrat. "It was who could beat whose butt, if you don't mind the expression." FSU went 0-5 that first season and 7-1 the next year. But it was for something that happened after his playing days that his reputation as a tough guy reached legendary status. Tully was a bouncer at a Tallahassee nightspot, the Seminole Club, when he escorted a University of Illinois baseball player outside. Tully then proceeded to deliver a few licks to future Green Bay Packer Ray Nitschke, one of the most feared players during his NFL career. Teammate Ted "Satchmo" Martin later said of Tully, listed at 6-foot, 185 pounds in the first FSU game program: "He's got a hundred pounds of meanness that don't show." After college, Tully worked with the Boy Scouts of America, owned the Varsity Dry Cleaners and worked for the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Tully remained a loyal FSU fan after college — still attending games in 2007 at the age of 82.
It was for his brother, Bobby who died of cancer soon after graduation,
that Tully Gym is named. Another brother, Jimmy, graduated from FSU, and
LC. was a former Leon County commissioner. |
