David Lycurgus Middlebrooks Obituary. Published by the Pensacola News Journal on Mar 29, 1997, page 20. D.L. Middlebrooks, 70, of Pensacola died on Wednesday, March 26, 1997. He was a graduate of Pensacola High School and a graduate of Florida State University. He played football on the first Seminole football team in 1947 and 1948. He was also a member of the KA Fraternity. Mr. Middlebrooks served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After college, he joined the U.S. Air Force where he served in the Korean Conflict. During the war he flew fifty combat missions. He received the distinguished flying cross, two oak leaf clusters, and the Air Force commendation medal with two battle stars. He still held the rank of reserve captain. After Korea, he attended the University of Florida Law School, where he graduated at the top of his class. He was the editor and chief of the law review and a member of the order of Quief. Mr. Middlebrooks received the J. Hillis Miller award for outstanding law school graduate. He was the first Federal judge to ever resign the bench. In 1974 he returned to Pensacola to join the Levin firm until two years ago when he stopped due to illness. While practicing law, he was the president of the John Marshall Bar Association. Mr. Middlebrooks was a faithful husband of forty five years and devoted father. His family was his life. He treated people from all walks of life with the same dignity and respect, and for that he will always be remembered. He was preceded in death by his son, David L. Middlebrooks, III.
