Obituary for Harold Nixon Conrad Published in the Wilson Funeral Home Harold Nixon Conrad, 95, of Panama City Beach, passed away on Monday, August 22, 2022. He was born June 16, 1927 in Panama City. Harold was preceded in death by his parents Chester and Esther Conrad; two brothers, Lynwood Conrad and Gerald Conrad; wife Gwen Newbern Conrad, the mother of his children, and stepson, David Stomackin. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Arleen Conrad and children John Devoe Conrad (Rhonda), Harold Nixon "Nicky" Conrad Jr. (Jane), Glen Frank Conrad (Jane), Lynn Kneese (Ed), as well as 13 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. Harold was a man who was an educator and community leader for his entire life. He graduated from Bay County High School, entered the Navy, and later earned his Bachelor's degree from Florida State University. He was on the first FSU football team in 1947, where he was a quarterback. Harold also was on the first baseball team as a catcher, and first the first basketball team. He was the first president of the FSU ATO fraternity, and was in the first graduating class that included men at the former Florida State College for Women. He was on the first faculty of Jinks Jr. High School as a physical education teacher and coached several varsity sports, including football, basketball, and gymnastics. While at Jinks he became the only Bay County coach to ever send a gymnastics team to the AAU gymnastics national tournament. He earned his Masters Degree from Florida State University in 1957, and subsequently assumed Assistant Principal duties at Springfield Elementary School. He later served as principal at West Bay Elementary, Southport Elementary and St. Andrew Elementary schools. In 1965 he was hired as the Director of the Night Studies Program and Athletic Director at Gulf Coast Jr. College. He was instrumental in the development of athletic scholarships at GCJC and helped to acquire the old athletic dormitory facilities known as "The Green Mansion". Harold was the Director of Admissions (Registrar) at GCJC until his retirement in 1985. He served for many years on the Board of the Boys Club of Bay County, St Andrew Kiwanis Club, and Oakland Terrace Men's Club, where he was in involved in the development of the ball fields and playground areas. He loved fastpitch
softball, and in 1962, he managed the local Walker's Cabinets softball team
to a state title. It is still the only softball team from Bay County to
win any type of state title. He resided for many years in Lynn Haven with
his wife Arleen, where he was a Lynn Haven City commissioner for several
years. He loved to play golf with his "Hacking Dogs" golf buddies, and
fish in the bay and at Howard Creek. Harold spent many days with his
family on St Andrews Bay and at White Western Lake, skiing, fishing,
swimming, scalloping and just enjoying his family life. He also loved
listening to the Panama City Pops in which his wife Arleen was a
violinist. |
