Obituary for Bill Glenn Published in the Tallahassee Democrat on July 10, 2019 and July 11, 2019 Former FSU men's basketball MVP, U.S.
Bankruptcy Judge Glenn passes away Bill Glenn was faced with a decision. Return to the Florida State men’s basketball team in 1967 or enroll in law school at Duke. “It’s not often your leading scorer is also the guy with highest grade-point average,” Hugh Durham said. “Bill knew that academics and law were going to impact his professional career more than basketball. He was the epitome of a student-athlete.” Glenn, a former basketball star at Leon High and FSU who later practiced law and served as a United States Bankruptcy Judge, passed away Sunday in his hometown of Jacksonville. He was 74. Glenn, a 6-foot-4 redshirt junior forward, averaged a team-high 15.4 points and 7.4 rebounds to earn team MVP honors on Durham’s first FSU team in 1966-67. Glenn scored a career-high 30 points in a 100-90 home win against Tulane. Granted a redshirt due to an earlier injury, Glenn could have played one more season for the Seminoles. However, he had graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from FSU, where his mother Hortense taught and was the dean of the School of Home Economics, and was accepted into Duke’s law school. Glenn headed to North Carolina. “It wasn’t the best decision for our team but it was the right decision for Bill,” said Durham, who resides in Jacksonville and was lifelong friends with Glenn. The two played golf at the same country club and “we usually saw each other on the practice tee,” Durham quipped. Durham said Glenn had been ill, and the two talked last Saturday. Glenn’s ties to FSU remained strong throughout his life. He was a member of the College of Human Sciences Board of Governors and had served for 20 years. He helped establish the Glenn Honor Society in memory of his mother. While at Duke, Glenn was President of the Law School Student Body. Glenn served a distinguished career on the bench. He was appointed to the Budget Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States in 2013. Prior to that, in 2010 he was elected to the National Board of Trustees of the American Inns of Court Foundation. Glenn was appointed to the bankruptcy ben Glenn is survived by his wife Karen; daughters Claire, Catherine, and Jill; sons Christopher and Kevin, as well as four grandsons, James, William, Reid, and Brock. He is also survived by his sister Joan Glenn. Glenn and the Seminoles finished 11-15 in Durham's first season. The roster also featured Lenny Hall, the first African American to play varsity basketball at FSU. "Bill was a pure shooter," said Tallahassee's Jeff Hogan, a sophomore on the 1966-67 team. "He was probably the smartest guy who ever played basketball at Florida State. He knew why he was there - he went on to practice law and was a judge. The rest of "Bill was a great role model for the young guys coming in." Glenn is the second player from the 1966-67 team to pass away over the last three months. In May, Dick Danford, a 6-foot-9 center who went into coaching, died in Panama City. "Bill was humble but sure
of himself as a man and as a player. I always enjoyed being in his company
because he cared about us. He was obviously smarter than all of us but he
never acted like it," said Dave Cowens. |
