Obituary for Dr. Faurest Coogle Published in The Courier-Journal on

Faurest Coogle, 73, of Frankfort, died at his home on September 7, 2013. He
was born in Stephensburg, KY, to Evin H. and Anna Marie Coogle. He played
basketball for Shawnee High School and Florida State University. In 1963,
he began a 50 year commitment to the education of Kentucky's children as a
basketball coach and biology teacher at Hickman County High School. He
later taught and coached at Iroquois High School in Louisville and earned a
Master's Degree at Murray State University. He earned an Ed.D. at the
University of Kentucky and served as Assistant Superintendent of Union
County Public Schools. In 1980, he became Superintendent of Franklin County
Public Schools, where he served for a decade. While at Franklin County, he
was among the founders of the All Academics Team which continues to honor
outstanding students and teachers in Franklin County. In 1987, he was
awarded the FL Dupree Award recognizing the Outstanding School
Superintendent in the State of Kentucky. He continued his work in education
at the Kentucky School Boards Association. At the time of his death, he was
employed on the Leadership Staff of the Kentucky State Senate where he
assisted in the drafting of education-related legislation, including
Kentucky's Senate Bill No. 1. He was preceded in death by his parents and
his sister, Rita Coogle Elzy. He is survived by sons, Matthew Coogle of
Louisville and Kent Coogle (Minda) of Winchester, and his nephew, Todd
Toles. He loved watching his granddaughter, Sylvia, pick and eat cherry
tomatoes from his garden, and enjoyed seeing his grandson, Silas, play
baseball in his backyard. Faurest was an avid fan of Bob Dylan and the
Louisville Cardinals.
