William Stuart Gregory Jr. Obituary Published by the Bradenton Times William Stuart (Stu) Gregory Jr., passed away on March 26, 2018 at the age of 83. Stu was born in Jacksonville, FL, to William Stuart Gregory, Sr., and Jean Cox Gregory. Stu graduated from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, FL in 1952 and attended Jacksonville Junior College and graduated from Florida State University on full athletic scholarships in basketball. Stu was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity at FSU and served as President his senior year. Upon graduation, Stu entered the US Army under the Reserve program. After completion of his service obligation, Stu was employed by the Home Insurance Company of New York working out of the Jacksonville, FL office. Stu worked for Home Insurance Company until being recalled to Army active duty during the Berlin Crisis of 1960. Upon returning to civilian life, Stu worked with Markel Service, Inc. until moving to Bradenton FL in 1963. In 1964, with business partner English Des Champs, purchased the Joe Fant Agency which formed the start of Des Champs and Gregory, Inc. now one of the leading Insurance Agencies in Manatee and Sarasota counties where he served as Chairman of the Board. Stu was involved in many national and local organizations including: President of the Independent Agents Association, President of the Manatee County Chamber of Commerce, President of the FSU Alumni Association, President of the Manatee Community Foundation, President of the DeSoto Boys Club of Manatee County, Chairman of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Manatee County, Crusade, Chairman for the American Cancer Society of Manatee County, President of the Board of Directors for Goodwill Industries. Stu was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bradenton. Stu was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his loving wife of sixty years, Gerry Anderson Gregory; sons, Stuart M. (Mac) Gregory (Trudi), Eric Anderson Gregory (Debbie) and Jeffrey Scott Gregory (Lisa) along with daughter, Erin Gregory O’Brien; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; sister, Jeanie Gregory Johnson (Fred).
