Obituary for Donald Owen Alford Published by Tallahassee Democrat from May 6 to May 8, 2015. Donald Owen Alford passed away on May 4, 2015 at St. Augustine Plantation in Tallahassee. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois on June 25, 1935 to the late John G. and Mildred Alford. Growing up, he made good grades but was addicted to sports. He became a basketball star at Naperville High School and was offered a scholarship to FSU. While there, he joined Sigma Chi Fraternity and was a member of the men's judiciary and honor court. He was elected to membership in Alpha Council, Gold Key, and ODK. After FSU, he went to medical school at the University of Florida, did an internship in Savannah, GA, and spent three years in the Navy in Jacksonville, FL. He subsequently completed a four-year residency in otolaryngology at Baylor Medical Center in Houston, Texas. He had a successful ENT practice in Tallahassee for 26 years and was chairman of the TMH medical staff in 1981. He and his wonderful wife, June, were married for 54 years and he had four children and eleven grandchildren. June died of a brain tumor in 2012 and received a posthumous Emeritus award two years ago. He has been on the boards of FSU musical association, Theater Patrons, National Alumni Society and the Emeritus Society. He received the Commitment to Excellence award from the National Emeritus Society. He has also been a board member of the Exchange Club and Town Club and was a member of the Campbell Society of the Florida State Foundation. His favorite board was the Boy's and Girl's Club of the Big Bend and he enjoyed tutoring some of the young men and women there. He felt strongly that the organization was valuable to the community. Don has been very involved in the Academy at FSU (now O.L.L.I.) and was a past president and executive committee member. He attended many theater and musical events in the community during his years in Tallahassee. He was an avid FSU sports fan and attended many football, basketball, and baseball games. He was a member of Premier Health and Fitness Center and enjoyed working out and socializing at the health club. He was a member of St. Paul's Methodist Church and loved his Sunday school class. He believed there is no better place to have lived than Tallahassee and was a tremendous advocate and spokesman for FSU. His loving wife June and brothers John Alford, Jr.
and Stanley Alford preceded him in death. He is survived by his four
children Shera Fahey (Mark), Darrell Alford (Tammy), Rick Alford (Geneva),
and Denise Kamisky Moore (Brad). He is also survived by his 11
grandchildren Ryan Fahey, Chris Fahey, Andrew Fahey, Katelyn Fahey, Brandon
Alford, Alex Alford, Lauren Alford, Stephen Alford, Katie Alford, Tanner
Kamisky, and Alexa Kamisky. |
