Professional Basketball Coach. For thirteen seasons (1971 to 1984), he
served as a head coach in the American and National Basketball Associations
with the Dallas Chaparrals, Seattle SuperSonics, San Antonio Spurs, Utah
Stars, Houston Rockets, Utah Jazz and Cleveland Cavaliers. Born Thomas
Edward Nissalke, he attended Florida State University, before launching his
lengthy coaching career, initially at the high school level. He coached on
the collegiate level as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin
followed by Tulane University, prior to reaching the professional ranks as
an assistant with the Milwaukee Bucks. He served under Larry Costello
during Milwaukee's NBA Title winning season of 1970-1971. He received ABA
Coach of the Year honors when he guided the Dallas Chaparrals to a playoff
berth (1971-1972) and was given NBA Coach of the Year honors with his
guiding of the Houston Rockets to the Eastern Conference Finals
(1976-1977). He had additional assistant coaching stints with the Charlotte
Hornets and Denver Nuggets, before becoming a game analyst with the Utah
Jazz. |
