Obituary for Robert W. Albertson Published by the Tallahassee Democrat, Sept. 4, 2018 Longtime Florida High basketball coach, referee Bob
Albertson dies. Bob Albertson’s association with Tallahassee basketball, specifically at Florida High and Florida State, spanned nearly a lifetime. He was a familiar figure on the sidelines, at the scorer’s table, on the court as a referee – and as an avid, loyal spectator in the stands during his later years. Albertson passed away Monday. He was 92. “He did so much for so many,” said former Maclay boy’s coach Mike McGrotha, also an eight-year assistant under Albertson at Florida High. “He taught me a lot of things about managing kids, how to treat people and how to do things the right way. I got that from coach Albertson more than anything.” Former Florida High coach Bob Albertson spent 44 years with the Seminoles, coaching basketball, while also serving as a high school refereee and working for 44 years as FSU men’s basketball’s head scorekeeper. Albertson was the head boy’s basketball coach at Florida High School for 43 years before retiring in 1990. The school’s gymnasium is named in his honor. He was the official scorekeeper for the Florida State men’s basketball team for more than 44 years, including the 1972 team that lost to UCLA in the national title game. Albertson was part of nearly all of the program's first 900-plus wins in its history. Albertson was also a high school referee for 55 years, having officiated two state championships over his time. Two years ago, Florida High hosted Albertson's 90th birthday party in the gymnasium that bears his name. "He lived a long life," said son Roy Albertson, one of five siblings and also a veteran clock operator for FSU men's basketball. "I think he did the book for every (men's) basketball coach Florida State has had (seven total)." When Ken McLean was hired by Florida High in 1954 as its first athletic director and football head coach, he hired Albertson in 1955 to be an assistant football coach and the head basketball coach. "He was a straight-shooter with his players," said Al Blizzard, who followed Albertson as Florida High's basketball coach. Blizzard recalled Albertson selling soft drinks after school on campus to help raise money for the Seminoles' basketball program. Albertson also arranged travel and payments for game referees. Away from the court, Albertson painted houses, played racquet sports, and loved to camp and fish. He often traveled cross country to California with his wife Virginia, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 81, staying at camping grounds along the way. Blizzard said Albertson told him during one trip west he thought he had found a good camp spot near a pathway. However, Albertson was urged by another camper to move higher on a nearby hill due to roaming buffalo. The following morning, a stampede of buffalo stormed down the pathway where Albertson intended to camp. Albertson also was a storyteller and loved to tell jokes. He enjoyed seeing others smile and laugh when he delivered the punch line. "The main thing you always remember about coach Albertson, during any encounter, there was always a joke he had to tell," said Charles Newlin, who played basketball for Albertson at Florida High from 1968-70. "How he remembered all those jokes, I don't know. "He was a good man."
