William Richard Kendall Obituary. Published by the St. Lucie News Tribune, Port Saint Lucie, Fla. on Mar 8, 2009, page 30. Family, friends remember Kendall. By Aimee Ford Foster, Correspondent. For nearly 60 years, Port St. Lucie resident William "Dick" Kendall paced the hardwood sidelines of high schools and colleges across the eastern United States. That career and life was celebrated on Saturday at a memorial ceremony at the Villas of Village Green Clubhouse. Kendall, 82, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach. Kendall, who retired to Florida in the early 1990s along with wife Wandalee was the coach at Stony Brook University from 1978-84 where he compiled a 92-65 record. He was 24-3 his first season, and led the team to the Div. III NCAA tournament his first two years. "We were extremely saddened to hear of Dick Kendall's passing," said Director of Athletics Jim Fiore in a release from Stony Brook. "Leading the Stony Brook men's basketball team to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances is a great achievement in the history of the Stony Brook men's basketball program, but the positive impact he had on those that he coached is a far greater legacy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Kendall family." A former Marine who served in World War II, Kendall graduated from Florida State University and launched his coaching career in Cairo, Ga., in 1951. He and Wandalee, who met at FSU, returned to Florida when he became coach at Auburndale High School where he amassed a 94-17 record from 1953-57, including state titles in 1955 and 1956. He then moved on to Jackson High School in Jacksonville, Jacksonville University and South Broward High before moving north. . After retiring to the Treasure Coast, Kendall served as a volunteer coach at Fort Pierce Central from 2001-03, and then volunteering at Morningside Academy from 2006-08, according to his daughter Shanna Kendall-Cetin.
Kendall's career record at all levels was 408-232. He also took a Pop
Warner football team to a national championship. |
