Noles Perform Well At UK.

Byram and McShine earn provisional marks.

LEXINGTON, KY - Brandon Byram turned in one of the best performances of the season on Saturday at the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet hosted by the University of Kentucky as he earned an NCAA provisional time in the 200m with a time of 21.03.

Byram's time is currently one of the top five times in the country as he finished third overall on Saturday, behind a pair of 2009 All-Americans in Kentucky's Rondel Sorrillo and Tennessee's Evander Wells.

"We had a pretty good meet," head coach Bob Braman said. "Both teams competed much better today and we continue to move forward."

Pilar McShine opened her 2010 indoor season with an NCAA provisional time in the mile run when she ran a 4:45.67 to finish in third place, her time was one of the top times in the country to date. McShine also turned in a strong performance in 3000m as she took the top spot in 9:34.04.

"It was a great double for Pilar earning a provisional in the mile and coming back and winning the 3000m," Braman said.

The Seminole women's distance runners dominated the 3000m and mile as FSU placed a combined six runners in the top 10 of each event. Freshman Amanda Winslow was not far behind McShine as she claimed fourth in the mile in a time of 4:51.84. Amanda Quick also claimed top 10 honors with a seventh-place finish in 4:56.21.

Jennifer Dunn (3rd, 9:42.30), Amanda Winslow (5th, 9:55.52) and Andrea Palen (8th, 10:00.40) all turned in top 10 performances in the 3000m.

Heptathletes Open First Day Of ACC Indoor Championships.

Barroilhet, Lomagistro represent the 'Noles in multi-events.

Feb. 25, 2010

BLACKSBURG, VA - Junior Gonzalo Barroilhet and Senior Collin Lomagistro kicked-off the first day of the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships Thursday, February 25, in the heptathlon with Barroilhet holding firm in fifth place with 2847 points and Lomagistro following with 1647 points to be in 11th place. Both 'Noles will conclude competition tomorrow at the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech beginning at 12 p.m. (EST).

"This is Gonzalo's first competition in a year," FSU Head Coach Bob Braman said. "Tomorrow is going to be do or die for him because if he doesn't qualify for nationals tomorrow then he won't make it. He is currently second in the nation in the heptathlon and tomorrow is his best events."

Barroilhet, ranked second in the nation in the heptathlon, opened the meet Thursday in the first heat of the 60m dash that saw the 'Nole posting a time of 7.14 to take eighth place overall. Lomagistro quickly followed in tenth place with a time of 7.51.

Next up for both men was the long jump. While Barroilhet leaped 6.89m/ 22-07.25 to position himself in sixth place, Lomagistro was unable to qualify in the event and fell to eleventh place. In the third event of the day, the shot put, Barroilhet led the 'Noles with a sixth place mark of 10.94m/ 35-10.75 with Lomagistro finishing in 10th place with a throw of 9.39m/ 30-09.75.

Both men closed out the day in the high jump that saw Barroilhet clearing a height of 1.99m/ 6-06.25 that earned him third place. At the conclusion of the first day, Barroilhet stands with 2847 points in fifth place.

As for Lomagistro, the 'Nole posted a mark of 1.63m/ 5-04.25 for 11th place and remains in 11th place with 1647 points.

"Gonzalo has been trying to rally up since his injury, but it's going to be on the line tomorrow," Coach Braman added. "Even if he can't qualify for nationals, he needs to do it for his team now because we need the points. We need him to be a top three or top four guy. He has some work to do."

The heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run. As for the rest of the Seminoles, all other events will be starting tomorrow beginning with the men's long jump at 1 p.m.

"I think the rest of us are ready to get out there," Coach Braman said. "The guys seem to be getting healthy and we really need to get through tomorrow. The ladies still have a few challenges, but we all need to have a good day tomorrow by qualifying. I feel good about it. We need to avoid the mishaps like the no heights or the false starts."

Chibudu Leaps NCAA's Best Long Jump In Second Day Of ACC Indoor Championships.

Men are currently in third place with 34 points.

Feb. 26, 2010

BLACKSBURG, VA - As junior Gonzalo Barroilhet closed out the heptathlon to post five points for FSU, the rest of the Florida State men's track and field team, ranked No. 13, hit the Rector Field House for the second day of the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships. With Brian Chibudu's long jump of 8.02m that leads the NCAA this season, the Seminoles are currently in third place and will battle to defend their 2009 title Saturday in the last day of the meet beginning at 11 a.m.

"Great job in the 200m guys," FSU Head Coach Bob Braman said. "Marlon Woods was all over the place today and he was a fighter for us. Brian leads the nation in the long jump and he looked great doing it. Maurice looked great as well in the 60m dash as well as the other guys with him. I mean we really qualified well today. It was a bit of a bitter/sweet ending because one of our athletes got hurt in the last event which we thought we could have won."

Barroilhet opened the day for the 'Noles in the heptathlon where he posted a time of 8.22 in the 60m hurdles, jumped a mark of 4.90m/ 16-0.75 in the pole vault and closed out the event in the 1000m run with a time of 3:08.42. The junior concluded the event scoring 5238 points to take fourth place.

Jumpers Chibudu and Marlon Woods scored major points for the 'Noles as both men posted top four finishes in the long jump. Woods took Chibudu's lead as the newcomer jumped 7.32m/24-0.25 to take fourth place and give four points to FSU.

Posting eight points in the high jump was junior Andrew Bachelor as the 'Nole leaped a mark of 2.10m/6-10.75 to take the silver medal.

Scoring a point for Florida State was Travis Whitfield in the weight throw as he earned eighth place with a toss of 17.50m/57-05.00 that is noted as a personal record for the senior.

Distance runners Matt Leeder and newcomer David Forrester both qualified for the mile run final as both 'Noles posted a top five finish time with Forrester taking third place with 4:07.77 and Leeder finishing fifth with 4:07.94. Both men will take the track at 12 p.m. Sunday.

Making huge strides for the 'Noles were sprinters Maurice Mitchell and David Ambler in the 60m dash where both men qualified for finals Sunday at 1:20 p.m. Mitchell's third place time of 6.68 is noted as the 13th best performance this season for the NCAA while Ambler's third place time of 6.71 is among the top 20 in the NCAA. Both times also qualify as NCAA provisional.

Mitchell alongside Charles Clark and Brandon Byram governed the track for the 200m as all three Seminoles earned not only qualifying times for the finals Sunday, but also scored NCAA provisional marks. Mitchell led the group with a first-place time of 21.17 with Clark quickly following in 21.18 to take second place and Byram running a time of 21.24 to finish in third. This is Clark's and Mitchell's first provisional time for the event as Byram already owns an automatic time from his performance at the Tyson Invitational.

Setting a personal record in the 800m and also qualifying for the finals was newcomer Darrin Gibson with a time of 1:51.88 that earned him third place.

"We competed really well," Coach Braman added. "Everyone matched their seed or did better. We moved into a good position today. We need to just avoid the injuries."

FSU Earns Two NCAA Automatic Marks In Second Day Of ACC Indoor Championships.

The Seminoles are currently in second place as they head into the final day.

Feb. 26, 2010

BLACKSBURG, VA The 20th ranked Florida State women's track and field team opened its first day of the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships successfully by positioning itself in second place with 35 points as it heads into the final day of the meet Saturday, February 27. The Seminoles will hit the Rector Field House on the campus of Virginia Tech tomorrow beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's high jump.

"The long jump was unbelievable," FSU Head Coach Bob Braman said. "Amy is going to nationals as well as Kim. They both did a great job. Caila Coleman did a great job by getting a lifetime best by two feet. A couple of injuries, but that was the only misfortune of the day. We had a good first day. Jennifer Dunn did a great job for her first ACC indoor meet. We are looking to keep fighting. I really like the way we fought."

Led by both Kim Williams and Amy Harris in the long jump, FSU successfully finished the day by posting two NCAA automatic marks in the event so both 'Noles could get their chance to battle at the national meet.

Matching her personal record was Williams as the Seminole earned her third indoor ACC medal with a second place mark of 6.51m/21-04.25 to score eight points. The junior's jump is fourth in the nation.

Harris followed her teammates lead as she earned her first automatic qualification with a new personal record leap of 6.37m/ 20-10.75 to take fourth place and win five points. Her mark is the sixth's best performance in the NCAA.

Earning a silver medal and scoring eight points to push FSU into second place was Liz Mabry in the pole vault with a mark of 4.05m/13-03.25.

Scoring FSU's first points was senior Caila Coleman in the weight throw as the 'Nole posted five points with a mark of 18.19m/ 59-08.25 that earned fourth place. Coleman's mark is also a personal record.

Sophomore Jennifer Dunn posted a time of 16:47.68 in the 5000m run to take fourth place and contribute five points for the Seminoles.

Kicking off the day for the Garnet and Gold were distance runners Pilar McShine and Amanda Winslow in the mile run prelims. While McShine ran a notable 4:51.68 to qualify for the finals Sunday, Winslow took her lead as she too ran a qualifying time with 5:01.14.

A trio of 'Noles dominated the women's 60m dash with Candyce McGrone, Teona Rodgers and Danielle Jeffrey all earning spots in the finals Sunday at 1:30 p.m. McGrone and Rodgers both posted an NCAA provisional time of 7.44 to finish in third and fifth, respectively, while Jeffrey finished in eighth with a time of 7.48.

The same threesome went on to battle in the 200m which unfortunately saw Rodgers not finishing due to an injury. However, McGrone was successful in earning a qualifying time for the finals with 24.18 that took sixth place.

Wrapping up the day was the distance medley crew composed of Winslow, Latera Davis, Christal Washington and Amanda Quick who finished in fifth place with a time of 11:44.92 and scored four points.

Seminole Men Win Eighth Straight Title, Women Finish Second at ACC Indoor Track Championships.

Teams combine for five individual crowns.

Feb. 27, 2010

BLACKSBURG, VA - Florida State played catch-up most of Saturday afternoon, but a fast finish allowed the Seminoles to raise the ACC Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship trophy for the eighth straight year.

Propelled by a sweep of the gold, bronze and silver medals in the 200-meter dash, coach Bob Braman's Seminoles pulled ahead over the final three running events to finish with 107 team points.

North Carolina placed second with 103.5 points, followed by host Virginia Tech with 97 and Virginia with 77. NC State tallied 63 team points to round out the top five.

The Men's Indoor Championship is the ninth overall for FSU, which captured its first in 1994.

Clemson, coached by Lawrence Johnson, brought home the Tigers' second ACC Women's Track and Field Indoor title and their first since 1992. Clemson took an 18-point lead into Saturday's final session and kept a comfortable lead with consistent performances throughout the final 11 events.

The Tigers finished with a strong 145.5 points. Florida State finished second with 93, followed by Virginia Tech with 74, Duke with 60 and Miami with 56.

The exciting final day featured an ACC-record and site best-tying record performance by Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison in the women's 60 meter hurdles. Harrison's blazing time of 7.94 topped the 24-hour mark of 7.99 she set in Friday's qualifying heat.

Just minutes after completing that record run, Harrison raced to another gold-medal time in the 400-meter dash, posting a winning time of 53.06.

And Florida State's Kimberly Williams set an ACC record of 46-8.25 in the women/s triple jump, assuring her of her third straight gold medal in the event and giving her the top two distances in the NCAA this year. Saturday's attempt leads the NCAA this season, set a Rector Field House record, and was just two centimeters off the all-time NCAA record.

Florida State's tide-turning men's 200 meter dash performance came in the 14th of the meet's 17 events and saw Charles Clark post a gold-medal time of 20.67 - the fastest in the NCAA this season. Teammates Maurice Mitchell (20.87) and Brandan Byram (21.04) rounded out the top three.

Entering the final three events, North Carolina led with 88.5 points, followed by Florida State with 88 and Virginia with 72.

The Seminoles then slipped into the lead behind Matthew Leeder's second-place finish in the 3,000-meter run. NC State's John Martinez won the gold medal in the event with a time of 8:09.77.

Virginia Tech moved into contention with a medals sweep in the pole vault. Hunter Hall grabbed the gold with a winning vault of 17-8.5, while Jared Jodon claimed the silver and Yavgenjy Olhovsky the bronze. But Florida State's third-place finish in the 4x400 relay (behind North Carolina and Clemson) proved enough to maintain the overall lead.

The men's mile run saw Virginia Tech sophomore Michael Hammond's strong finish net a winning time of 4:10:36, edging North Carolina's Adam Cunningham (4:10.50) and Duke's Cory Nanni (4:10.63).

Miami sophomore Devon Hill posted a winning time of 7.78 in the 60-meter hurdles, while North Carolina freshman Clayton Parros led the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.02.

Virginia placed the top two runners in the men's 800-meter run as freshman Robby Andrews took the gold with a time of 1;50.73 and sophomore Lance Roller placed second at 1:51.21.

In the men's 60-meter dash, Florida State's Mitchell led all sprinters with a first-place time of 6.66, a fraction ahead of NC State's A'Tolani Akinkuoto (6.67).

Georgia Tech senior Steve Marcele earned a gold medal in the men's shot put for the third year in a row with a winning throw of 61-11. Georgia Tech bagged another gold medal in the men's triple jump, where Alphonso Jordan posted a winning distance of 53-4.25.

Clemson led the women's scoring heading into Saturday, and April Sinkler kept the Tigers' momentum flowing in the day's first event by successfully defending her 2009 individual title in the high jump. Sinkler, who is also a two-time winner in the women's long jump, cleared the bar with an NCAA-qualifying leap of 6-0.75.

A first-place finish by freshman Brianna Rollins in 200-meter dash helped the Tigers further solidify their 2010 championship.

The women's mile featured a 1-2 finish by the Semionles' Pilar McShine (4.44.62) and Amanda Winslow (4:46.95). McShine captured the silver medal in 2009. The 800-meter runs saw Boston College's Caitlin Bailey take home the gold medal for the second consecutive year with a time of 2:07.64.

Boston College captured another gold medal in a women's running event as senior Mallory Champa set the pace in the 3,000 meters.

Virginia's Maureen Laffan won the women's shot put with a throw of 52-4.75, a fraction ahead of the throw of 52-4.5 by Lawanda Henry of NC State.

The women's 4x400 relay concluded the day's events, and Clemson added an exclamation point with another gold medal. The Tigers posted a winning time of 3:35.76, breaking the standing ACC record of 3:38.40 set by Miami in 2006.

NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS, 7th place
03/13/2010, March 12-13, 2010, Fayetteville, Ar

From the FSU Website, seminoles.com.

Williams Claims Another Title.

Women finish tied for seventh while men claim a tie for 12th.

FAYETTEVILLE, AR - Kim Williams proved why she is one of the top triple jumpers in the country Saturday night as she became just the fifth woman in NCAA history to win back-to-back indoor triple jump crowns.

Williams' top jump reached as the Kingston, Jamaica, native earned her fourth career national title and her seventh All-American honor in her two and a half year career. Williams hit the mark in her third and final jump of the opening round to move on to the three-jump final where she was unable to surpass her previous mark but still claimed the top spot and her second straight indoor national title.

"What a great honor for Kim to win another national title in the triple jump," head coach Bob Braman said. "She was outstanding this indoor season and has been a huge part of our team's success."

Pilar McShine earned her third All-American honor and second straight in the mile run as she claimed third place in a time of 4:37.20.

Florida's Charlotte Browning led most of the race and McShine made a move with less than two laps left to move into second place. McShine was unable to hold off Washington's Katie Follett down the final stretch finishing in third place. McShine improved on her finish from a year ago as the Port-of-Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, native finished fourth in the mile at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Maurice Mitchell made it two for two in All-American honors as the junior placed seventh in the 60m dash in a time of 6.67 just a hundredth of a second slower than his prelim time. Mitchell also claimed All-American honors on Friday with a fifth place finish in the 200m dash.

Matt Leeder turned in a top 10 finish in the men's 3000m run as he ran an 8:17.44. Leeder was in the middle of the pack the majority of the race but was unable to move into scoring territory for the Seminoles.

Andrew Bachelor cleared seven feet in the high jump for the third time this season as he finished in a tie for 15th place. Bachelor cleared 6-10.25 on two attempts before reaching 7-0.25 on his third and final attempt in the second round. The Pompano Beach, Fla., native was unable to clear 7-2.25 in the third round.

"We battled a number of injuries during the indoor season but we have always been an outdoor team and that is what we are gearing up for now," Braman said.

On the women's side the Seminoles finished in the top 10 for the third straight season with 20 team point, while the University of Oregon claimed the national title with a total of 61 points.

Meanwhile on the men's side, the Seminoles finished in the top 20 for the 12th consecutive national meet with a tie for 12th place. FSU posted 16 team points as the University of Florida won the title with 57 team points.

The Seminoles will continue the outdoor season next Friday as they will head to Tampa for the Bulls Invitational hosted by USF.

Sprinters Shine At Bulls Invite.

Ambler and Jeffrey post nation's top times.

TAMPA, FL - A pair of Seminole sprinters stole the show at the Bulls Invitational in Tampa, Fla. Friday night as Danielle Jeffrey on the women's side and David Ambler on the men's side both set the nation's top time in the 100m dash.

"What a great way to start the outdoor season for both Danielle (Jeffrey) and David (Ambler)," head coach Bob Braman said.

On the track Danielle Jeffrey turned in the nation's top time in the 100m dash as the Kingston, Jamaica native, ran an 11.71 to take first place. LaSonya Rodgers also posted a sub-13 time in the 100m as she ran a 12.46 to post a top-20 finish. Jeffrey also turned in the third-best 200m mark in the region later in the day as the sophomore crossed the line in 24.20 for second place.

David Ambler turned in a similar nation-leading performance on the men's side as the freshman ran 10.37 to take the top spot and put himself in good position to make the regional very early in the season. Ambler also claimed a top five finish in the 200m with a time of 21.46 which was good for fourth.

In the men's hammer Travis Whitfield set a personal best and the third-best mark in the region this outdoor season with a top throw of 194-8 to claim the Bulls Invitational title. Trevor Andrews joined Whitfield in the top 10 as he threw the hammer 159-3 to earn seventh place.

Lizbeth Mabry cleared 12-9.5 in the pole vault to claim the overall title as she also posted the top mark in the region early in the outdoor season. Joining Mabry in the top five was Callie Giffin who cleared 11-11.75, while Abby Sutton posted a mark of 10-11.75 to tie for 10th along with Lauren Giffin.

Meanwhile on the men's side, Gonzalo Barroilhet earned second place in the pole vault with a top vault of 16-00.75. Andrew LaHaye cleared 15-7 to earn a fourth place finish on the day.

Michelle Jenije opened with a jump of 17-10.75 in the long jump in her very first jump but was unable to build on the strong start and finished in sixth place on the day.

William Steele garnered a third place finish in the long jump with a top jump of 22-0.75, which ranks in the top 20 in the region heading into the week. Marlon Woods joined Steele in the top 10 in the triple jump as Woods cleared 47-5.75 for a third place finish.

Caila Coleman also posted a top 10 regional mark in the hammer throw as the Tallahassee native recorded a top throw of 166-6 to earn third place in the meet. Bryan Howard claimed the javelin throw with a top toss of 208-5 falling just three feet shy of a personal best.

The region's leader in the shot put posted another 50-foot toss on Friday as Allyn Laughlin threw the shot 50-2.5 to claim the individual title.

Valerie Fluornoy improved on her region-leading time in the 100m hurdles as she ran a 13.85 to take second place in the event.

Bree-Arne McArdle and Emily Ness posted top 10 finishes in the 1500m with times of 4:33.84 and 4:39.39, while McArdle's mark set a new personal best.

"We need to keep building on today's performance and get ready for the FSU Relays and really get rolling in the coming weeks," Braman said.

The Seminoles will return home next week to host the FSU Relays set to run Thursday, March 25-27.

Pemberton Runs NCAA's Fastest 100m Time.

In her second performance as a 'Nole, Pemberton continues to lead the nation.

April 2, 2010

AUSTIN, TX & GAINESVILLE, FL - The Florida State track and field teams (Men- No. 4/ Women- No. 5) continued the push upward Saturday night at the Texas and Florida Relays by having five Seminoles set top 10 NCAA performances including a nation leading 100m time of 11.20 by freshman Marecia Pemberton. FSU will wrap up competition Saturday at both meets.

"We had a whale of a day in women's sprints," FSU Head Coach Bob Braman said. "It's an unbelievable time for Marecia. Candyce and Teona did phenomenal in the 200m and it was a lifetime best for Candyce. After a tough indoor season, to see them step up was fantastic. Darrin Gibson ran a lifetime best and Nathan Duby gave good effort."

The women's sprints group dominated the Florida Relays with three 'Noles setting top 10 times in the NCAA.

In the newcomer's second performance as a Seminole, Pemberton blew past the competition as she captured first place in the 100m with a time of 11.20. Pemberton's time matched FSU's top performance on the all-time performance list in program history. Danielle Jeffrey finished in 12th place in the same event with a time of 11.61.

Candyce McGrone also had an impressive showing in the 200m as she ran a personal-record time of 23.16 which is third in the nation. Teammate Teona Rodgers joined McGrone in the event and took sixth place with a notable time of 23.32 that sits as the fourth fastest time in the NCAA.

As the only field athlete to represent FSU in Florida, Caila Coleman posted a mark of 48.84m in the hammer throw to take fourth place.

The distance crew had a good showing as Jennifer Dunn earned second place in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:32.25 that is noted as 13th in the nation, while newcomer Pasca Cheruiyot opened her season with a runner-up finish in the 5000m with a time of 16:21.12 that is the ninth best time in the NCAA this season.

"We were excited to see Ngoni back on the runway" Associate Head Coach Harlis Meaders said. "Texas Relays provides an opportunity to compete against the best athletes in the country and it is the best meet we have all year. This meet is the perfect setup to the conference meet and NCAA. I was excited to see everyone compete and I think we learned a lot."

While the track athletes took care of business in Florida, a few of the field athletes continued to impress at Texas.

Leading the squad was Ngoni Makusha as the 'Nole opened his season with a leap of 7.54m in the long jump that is recorded as the NCAA's eighth best jump this season. Marlon Woods, who currently leads the nation with his jump from FSU Relays (7.99m), jumped a mark of 7.48m to finish in seventh place.

On the women's front, Amy Harris leaped the NCAA's eighth best mark in the long jump with 6.21m that earned her sixth place.

Sprinters wrap up Florida Relays.

April 3, 2010

AUSTIN, TX & GAINESVILLE, FL - After a busy day of track action on Friday the Seminole squads (Men: No.4/Women: No. 5) wrapped up a pair of meets on Saturday. The shot putters were in action at the Texas Relays while sprinters were competing at the Florida Relays.

"Today was a much quieter one but the women's 4x100m turned in another season best after all four of them had great times on Friday," head coach Bob Braman said. "We are going to keep moving forward and get ready for the Seminole Invite next weekend in our own backyard."

The women's 4x100m relay squad improved on their mark from a week ago as the group of Marecia Pemberton, Candyce McGrone, Danielle Jeffrey and Teona Rodgers clocked a 44.57 to claim fourth place and third place among college teams. The group's time currently ranks among the top 10 in the East region.

Michelle Jenije claimed eighth place in the triple jump as she cleared 40-0.75, falling short of her previous season-high of 41-1.5.

Meanwhile at the Texas Relays, shot putters Allyn Laughlin and Michael Putman were in action. Laughlin finished eighth in the women's shot put with a top toss of 51-0, a quarter of an inch shorter than her top throw of the season as the junior holds the eighth-best throw in the region this year.

Putman turned in a top throw of 59-6.25 to move into the top 5 in the region as he finished fourth overall and third among collegians at the Texas Relays.

The Seminoles will return to Tallahassee next weekend as they will host the second of three home meets this season with the Seminole Invite getting under way on Friday, April 9.

SEMINOLE INVITE
04/10/2010, TALLAHASSEE, FL, April 9-10, 2010

Williams, Putman Shine.

Olympic Medalist Walter Dix claimed the 200m in 20.44.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Junior Kimberly Williams opened her outdoor season in impressive fashion Saturday afternoon as she set the nation's top triple jump mark as she cleared 44-4.25 at the Seminole Invite.

"We didn't have a ton of athletes going today but we got some good work in and I think we are ready for next weekend," head coach Bob Braman said.

Williams cleared 44-2 in her opening jump before setting the nation's top mark in her sixth and final attempt. Joining Williams in the triple jump was Latera Davis who cleared 39-8.5 to claim fourth place.

Michael Putman turned in a stellar throw in the shot put as he earned a personal best and the second-longest throw of the outdoor season in the country with a mark of 60-11.25. Of Putman's six throws four cleared 60 feet something that only five athletes in the country have done this season.

Putman also turned in a top 10 regional performance in the discus throw as the Miami, Fla., native cleared 178-4 to earn the win.

"Kimmy and Michael were the highlight of the meet," Braman said. "Kimmy continues to impress and Michael continues to improve week in and week out."

Maurice Mitchell opened his day in the 100m with a top 20 performance in the country as his 10.42 set a personal best and equaled the 19th-fastest time in the 100m this season.

Mitchell faced some stiff competition later in the day in the 200m as two-time Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix paced the 200m field with a 20.44, while Mitchell garnered second place in 20.83, the ninth-fastest time in the country this season.

The men's 800m saw a trio of runners post top 50 regional times led by Nathan Duby who crossed the line in 1:50.95 for the win. David Forrester (1:51.46) and Darrin Gibson (1:51.81) finished 3-4 in the race.

A women's 1500m field littered with Seminoles saw Jennifer Dunn set a personal best in the event as she ran a 4:30.11 to claim the event ahead of Bree-Arne McArdle who finished in a time of 4:35.21. Rounding out the top three was Amanda Quick with her time of 4:37.80.

The duo of Teona Rodgers and Valerie Flournoy both turned in top 48 times in the region in the 100m hurdles as Rodgers clocked a 13.69 and Flournoy a 13.76 in the prelims before Flournoy captured the finals in 13.94.

Dayonne Rollins (57.19) and Cinnamon Johnson (57.58) each earned top five finishes in the 400m for the Seminoles.

The Seminoles will return to action on Thursday, April 15 at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Clemson, S.C.

Noles Open ACC Championships.

Men tied for third, women tied for fifth.

April 15, 2010

CLEMSON, SC - Florida State opened the 2010 ACC Outdoor Championships on Thursday in Clemson, S.C. with a strong start in the discus by Michael Putman and the duo of Pasca Cheruiyot and Andrea Palen capped off the day with top five finishes in the 10,000m.

Pasca Cheruiyot was in a battle right from the start in the 10,000m as she pulled away from the rest of the field along with Clemson's Kimberly Ruck and Wake Forest's Anna Nosenko. Not far behind the lead pack was Andrea Palen who was leading the second group for most of the race.

"Pasca and Andrea both ran great races and put themselves in good position for regionals," head coach Bob Braman said. "We fought really hard in every event."

With less than two miles to go Ruck and Nosenko pulled away from Cheruiyot, but the junior maintained a close margin with the leaders and held on for the third place finish in a time of 34:57.79.

Palen and Duke's Carly Seymour in a neck and neck battle in the bell lap and were sprinting down the homestretch but Seymour was able to edge out Palen by .02 seconds for fourth place giving Palen the fifth-place finish. The 10 combined points from the distance group pushed FSU into a tie for fifth place after the opening day.

Michael Putman opened the scoring for the Seminoles on Thursday as the sophomore threw the discus 178-6 to finish fourth overall and garner five points for FSU. Putman recorded his top throw in his first toss and then equaled the mark in his very next throw but was unable to eclipse the mark in his next four attempts.

The Seminoles grabbed six team points in the men's javelin as Bryan Howard earned fourth place for five points and Gonzalo Barroilhet held on to eighth place for a single point. Howard hit 206-10 in his second throw, while Barroilhet threw his top mark of 185-4 on his second attempt as well.

The duo of Matt Leeder and Mike Fout were able to grab three more points for the Noles in the final event of the night as Leeder finished seventh overall in the men's 10,000m in 30:08.50. Leeder crossed the line a little less than six seconds ahead of Fout who finished in a time of 30:14.02 for eighth place.

"We could use some luck but we are not hurting for effort right now," Braman said. "We just need to carry this into tomorrow and be ready to go."

Collin Lomagistro opened the decathlon with his second-highest point total of the day in the 100m dash with a time of 11.95 for 661 points. The senior added 657 more points in the long jump with a top jump of 20-9.

Lomagistro tacked on 395 points in the shot put (27-10.25) and 512 in the high jump (5-5.25) before closing out the day with a time of 51.24 to grab 758 points for a day one total of 2,983 which is good for ninth place. Lomagistro sits just 55 points shy of eighth place and scoring for the Seminoles.

The FSU men finished day one with 14 points and are currently tied with Wake Forest for third place, while Virginia and Duke hold down the top two spots with 25 and 16 points. The 10 points garnered by the pair of Cheruiyot and Palen has the Seminole women in a tie for fifth place after day one behind Clemson (29), Virginia (21) and Duke and Georgia Tech (11).

The Seminoles will continue action on Friday beginning at 10 a.m. when the decathlon concludes, followed by the conclusion of the heptathlon beginning at 10:30 a.m. The first running events of the day will take place at 3 p.m. with the 1,500m prelims.

Amanda Winslow continued her stellar freshman campaign on Friday as she was able to post the top time in the 1500m with her time of 4:29.86, while fellow Seminole Pilar McShine also grabbed a spot in the final with a time of 4:31.62. Winslow's time was the fastest of any Seminole this season.

"I'm proud of their efforts and maybe a few more breaks and we can do something special tomorrow," Braman added.

Action will get under way at 11 a.m. on Saturday with the women's pole vault followed by the men's high jump, hammer throw and women's triple jump at 12 noon. Track action will continue at 3 p.m. with the men's 4x100m relay.

The men will be looking for their sixth consecutive title on Saturday and lead North Carolina by three points, while Virginia trails by four followed by Duke (11) and Wake Forest (12). On the women's side, host Clemson holds a 27-point advantage over the Noles with a two-day total of 65. FSU is in second place with 38 points followed by Virginia (34), Duke (26) and NC State and Georgia Tech (21).

FSU Women Finish Second At ACCs.

Williams wins third straight triple jump title.

April 17, 2010

CLEMSON, SC - The Florida State women's track and field squad picked up four individual wins Saturday to hold onto second place at the ACC Outdoor Championships in Clemson, S.C.

Triple jump extraordinaire Kim Williams won her third consecutive outdoor triple jump title by more than half a foot. Williams cleared 44-2.5 to claim the title with her very first jump. Joining Williams in the scoring column was Michelle Jenije who placed seventh in the triple jump (41-10) setting a new personal best in the process. Tiara Swanagan narrowly missed on scoring as she finished ninth with a top jump of 40-9.5.

Callie Giffin set a new personal best in the pole vault when she cleared 12-9.50, the third-highest jump in school history, en route to All-ACC honors. Giffin opened at 11-7.75 and hit the mark on her second attempt before clearing 12-1.5 in her first attempt and then cleared at 12-5.5 and 12-9.5 in her second attempt at each.

Freshman Marecia Pemberton continued her impressive outdoor season with a win in the 100m as the youngster clocked a wind-aided 11.12 to take the title, while senior Teona Rodgers earned the first of her two All-ACC honors with a third place showing in 11.34.

Rodgers would take a title of her own in the 200m as she stormed back on teammate Candyce McGrone to claim the title in 22.81. McGrone grabbed an All-ACC honor of her own with her time of 23.00.

Britany St. Louis claimed All-ACC honors in the 400m as the junior ran 54.32 to grab six team points.

All-American Pilar McShine turned in an impressive final lap in the 1500m to win her second straight ACC 1500m title in as many years. McShine trailed North Carolina's Ashley Verplank and Brianna Felnagle heading into the bell lap but closed the gap in the first turn and grabbed the lead in the final 100m to win the crown.

Two days after scoring All-ACC honors in the 10000m Pasca Cheruiyot was in action once again in the 5000m and the junior turned in a time of 16:38.53 to earn five team points and a fourth-place finish.

The 4x100m relay squad of Cinnamon Johnson, Marecia Pemberton, Danielle Jeffrey and Teona Rodgers turned in a second-place showing as the group ran the 400m in a combined 44.72, less than a half second behind Clemson.

Caila Coleman contributed three points in the hammer throw as the junior recorded a top throw of 164-0 in her second attempt en route to a sixth-place finish.

The Seminoles combined for 124 team points which was good for second place behind Clemson who posted 177 points.

Walter Dix Sets Records In Last Day Of Seminole Twilight.

Both FSU 4x100m groups ran nation's second fastest time.

TALLAHASSEE, FL - Despite a weather delay that postponed competition for an hour, the Florida State track and field teams put on an exciting last home meet in the Seminole Twilight at the Mike Long Track. Former Seminole Walter Dix highlighted the day with a blistering 100m time of 9.98 that set a new FSU record and then continued to break records in the 200m as he ran a time of 19.89. Both of Dix's performances today rank second in the world.

"It was pretty good today," Dix said. "I came out and did what I wanted to do. I wanted to run a sub 10 in the 100 and a sub-20 in the 200. I didn't know the events were an hour back-to-back so I ran pretty good for the time. This is my home. I like running here because I can run in front of my family and my friends and they get the first taste of what's going on in my life as far as track and field so it's a blessing to be able to come here and run well. Most of the crowd is family, friends and teammates. It's my home crowd so it's a perfect atmosphere for me to start up in."

The Elite Section implemented in this meet for the first time was a success as several of the world's top athletes competed in front of Seminole fans. Throughout the thrilling day, fans were able to see new records broken and many of FSU's current athletes set some of the nation best performances.

"This was exciting," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "More than anything else, hats off to (Assistant Coach) Ken Harnden. He's been saying for years that we needed to do this, this European model, a 90-minute program with as many stars as we can bring in. I was just amazed that Walter (Dix) could run that double (100m and 200m) in that short period of time where normally he gets much more recovery time. Obviously, we had the rain delay and it ended up clearing up but it's not ideal conditions, it was awfully thick out here, which certainly hurts the distance runners but it's not even good for the sprinters."

The women's 4x100m foursome of Candyce McGrone, Marecia Pemberton, Danielle Jeffrey and Teona Rodgers ran the nation's second fastest time this season with an impressive time of 43.13 to capture first place.

"The first two events, right out of the box, were awesome with the women's 4x100 with a 43.13," Braman said. "Last year we were second in the NCAA Meet with a 43.30 so now you start going head to head with Texas A&M who has the collegiate record so teams are going to have to pay attention to us a little bit."

The men's 4x100m quartet composed of David Ambler, Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell and Brian Chibudu also recorded a notable time of 39.06 to earn first place which is now tied as the second-fastest performance in the nation this season.

"In the men's 4x100, we lose our leader, Charles Clark, for the year," Braman said. "He's our anchor and we were the NCAA champion two years ago with him so we drop Brian Chibudu in there and run an outstanding 39.06 which should be in the top four in the country so we're right in there and that's really exciting."

Sprinters continued to control the track in both the 100m and 200m Elite Sections. While Dix posted an impressive time of 9.98 in the 100m, Mitchell quickly followed his lead with a second-place time of 10.28. The 200m again saw Dix governing the track with Byram quickly following as the first collegiate athlete to finish with a time of 20.40 which ranks second in the NCAA.

Kevin Borlee ran a season-best in the 400m Elite Section as the `Nole trumped the opposition with a time of 45.60 to take first place. His time ranks in the top 10 best performances in the NCAA this season.

On the women's front, Pemberton continued to lead the `Noles in the 100m Elite Section as the newcomer ran a time of 11.33 with Rodgers coming in second place with a time of 11.51. The 200m saw McGrone leading the pack with a first place time of 23.19.

Jumper Marlon Woods led the men in the long jump Elite Section as he leaped a mark of 7.69m to win first place.

Kim Williams earned her second title of the weekend as the `Nole took first place in the triple jump Elite Section with a mark of 13.51m.

Valerie Flournoy governed the track for the 100m hurdles as she earned first place with a season-best time of 13.62.

Gonzalo Barroilhet also recorded a season best in the 110m hurdles as he posted a time of 14.13 to take first place.

The women's 1500m Elite Section featured an array of Seminoles setting personal bests with Pilar McShine leading the way with a first place time of 4:14.20 that ranks fourth in the NCAA this season. Following her lead was Amanda Winslow in second place with a time of 4:19.29, while Pasca Cheruiyot came in third place with a time of 4:24.22.

Mid-distance runner Wes Rickman took third place in the 1500m with a time of 3:55.86.

Thrower Caila Coleman dominated the hammer throw with a first-place toss of 49.10m, while Trevor Andrews set a new personal record in the same event with a mark of 49.21m.

Michael Putman also joined the list of Seminoles directing the field as the sophomore won first place in the shot put Elite Section with a toss of 18.37m.

Sister duo Callie Giffin and Lauren Giffin had good showings in the pole vault as they took second and third place, respectively, with a mark of 3.67m.

"It's about racing hard and competing really hard and we had a lot of that today," Braman said. "We beat good people, had good marks and competed well."

FSU Qualifies 11 In Last Day Of Regionals.

A total of 18 Seminoles will compete at the final site of the NCAA's.

GREENSBORO, NC - The Florida State track and field teams closed out the last day of the NCAA East Regional Championships on a high note as 11 Seminoles earned qualifying marks to earn a spot at the final site in Eugene, Oregon. FSU advanced a total of 18 athletes throughout the weekend for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships beginning June 9-12.

"The last two days have been incredible," FSU head coach Bob Braman said. "We took advantage of every point we could get. We really had a great meet. The first day we had a couple of people compete really well and had a few not make it, but really we had almost everyone we could get through and a few extras. The kids who got through weren't in seventh or eighth place, but they were automatic qualifiers who finished in first, second or third. We overcame an unbelievably bad lane draw in the 4x100m and ran the second-fastest time in the meet. Then you have Kim jump over 14 feet which not a lot of people have done in the history of the meet. I just couldn't be any happier right now."

Highlighting the day for the women was Kim Williams in the triple jump. The Seminole dominated the event as she shattered her previous season-best mark with a leap of 14.03m to win first place. The impressive jump is noted as the worlds' 10th best performance this year.

Both the men's and women's 4x100m relay squads earned qualifying spots in the first round of the event to advance to the final site.

The men's quartet of David Ambler, Brandon Byram, Maurice Mitchell and Brian Chibudu posted a time of 39.33 to take third place.

After a lineup change that incorporated long jumper Amy Harris as the third leg, the women's foursome of Candyce McGrone, Marecia Pemberton and Teona Rodgers clocked in a time of 44.04 to finish in fourth place.

Mitchell continued his wave of success as the 'Nole sped through the 200m quarterfinals in a personal record time of 20.24 that won first place. The performance is the world's seventh best time this season. As the only Seminole that will compete in three events, Mitchell is slated to battle in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m at the final site.

Byram followed Mitchell's lead as he also posted a personal record in the 200m with a time of 20.40 that earned third place and qualified him for the final site.

Breaking her personal best in the 200m was McGrone as the 'Nole governed the track with a time of 22.84 that captured first place, while Rodgers finished in third place with a time of 23.08. McGrone's time is noted as the world's 12th best performance this season.

Michael Putman punched his second ticket to nationals as he threw a mark of 53.70m in the discus to finish in ninth place. Putman will now compete in both the shot put and the discus in Eugene.

Mid-distance runners Pilar McShine and David Forrester will battle at the final site as both Seminoles earned qualifying marks in the 1500m. McShine had a good showing with a time of 4:18.19 to earn second place, while Forrester came in 13th place with a time of 3:51.70.

Despite being delayed a day due to weather conditions Friday night, Jennifer Dunn ran a notable time of 10:31.74 in the 3000m steeplechase Saturday morning to finish in the top 10 and qualify for the final site.
