FSU Softball Starts NCAA Tournament With 7-2 Victory Over Coastal Carolina.

ATHENS, GA - Besides the championship game, no contest is more important to win in the postseason than the first one. The Florida State University softball team made sure it got into the winner's bracket at the Athens regional of the NCAA Tournament by jumping out to an early lead and not looking back as the Seminoles beat Coastal Carolina 7-2 on Friday (May 19).

The win improved Florida State's record to 42-27 on the year, while the Lady Chanticleers dropped to 38-21. The Seminoles will play the winner of the Georgia-Georgia Southern contest at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

"We wanted to take control early and jump out in the lead," FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. "Any time you let a team hang around, especially when you're the higher seed, it puts a little bit more pressure on you."

Getting the victory in relief was sophomore Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) as she improved to 29-17. The right-hander came on in the second inning to get the Seminoles out of a bases loaded jam. McDonald gave up two runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Coastal Carolina's Christine Doyle was saddled with the loss as she dropped to 20-8.

"I wasn't as sharp as I could have been," McDonald admitted. "In a regional you can't come out flat, but the offense did a great job today to pick me up. I've got to come out even harder tomorrow. You never want to let up but when you have a big lead there's more room for error and sometimes you're not at your best."

Florida State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as it put up a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, designated player Whitney Buckmon (Stone Mountain, Ga.) picked up an infield single before shortstop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela) hit a sharp ball back at Doyle, then second baseman Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) singled to right field to load the bases.

Pushing the first two runs across the board was first baseman Brittany Osmon (San Diego, Calif.) as she singled up the middle to plate Buckmon and Alicart. With two outs, the throw to first on catcher Melissa Wood's (Lilburn. Ga.) ground ball was in the dirt, allowing Wootson and Osmon to score.

The Seminoles used their speed in the bottom of the second inning to produce two more runs. With two outs, left field Natasha Jacob (Coppell, Texas) picked up a lead off single then stole second base. Buckmon's second hit in as many innings allowed Jacob to score. Alicart, who reached on a fielder's choice, moved up to second on Wootson's second hit then came around to score when Osmon's grounder was misplayed.

"It's a fast infield and couple of our slappers were able to get some high chops to get on base," Graf added. "We've got a hard infield at home so we're somewhat use to playing on this surface so we were able to take advantage of that and want to continue to do that tomorrow."

Coastal Carolina got on the board in the fourth inning when McDonald issued three-straight one-out walks to load the bases. Alicart couldn't get Danyelle Gerdts' grounder out of her glove fast enough as the first runner came home. The Lady Chanticleers added a run in the seventh on a solo home run by Kelly Feely.

Florida State got a run back in the fourth when Buckmon picked up a bunt single, then stole second and third. Wootson brought her home with her third hit of the day, a double into the left field gap.

Four of the top five hitters in the FSU's line-up picked up two or more hits as the Seminoles pounded out 13 on the day with seven of the nine players collecting a hit. Leading the charge was Wootson and Buckmon as they had three a piece, while Jacob and Osmon added a pair. Buckmon and Alicart were tops with two trips across the plate and Osmon drove in a team-best two runs.

FSU Softball Moves One Win Away From Super Regional With 3-2 Win Over No. 8 Georgia.

ATHENS, GA - At the beginning of the season, Florida State softball coach Dr. JoAnne Graf knew her young team was going to be a much different squad by the end of the season. The Seminoles are proving her right so far as they are now one victory away from the NCAA Tournament Super Regional after beating eighth-ranked Georgia 3-2 on Saturday (May 20).

With the victory, Florida State improved to 43-27 overall. Georgia dropped to 52-14. The Seminoles next play at 12 p.m. on Sunday in the regional championship, taking on the winner of the Georgia-Georgia Southern elimination game. Undefeated so far in the regional, FSU only has to win one of two possible games Saturday to advance.

"It was really important that we got up on them early because it put pressure on them," Graf said. "If we let them get up a couple of runs they're going to be free swingers. We escaped a couple of innings with some great defense in crucial times. You can't let a great hitting team get extra at-bats. Our defense kept them off the bases and won the game for us."

Notching her 30th victory was FSU starter Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) as she improved to 30-17. The right-hander threw her-ACC best 37 complete game and only gave up two runs on seventh hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Taking the loss for the Bulldogs was Kasi Carroll as she dropped to 28-6.

Florida State got on the board first thanks to a trio of Georgia miscues. Second baseman Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) reached base on an error by shortstop Allison Horne. First baseman Brittany Osmon (San Diego, Calif.) poked a hit up the middle then center fielder Carly Brieske (Safety Harbor, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to put two runners in scoring position.

The first run came across when catcher Melissa Wood (Lilburn, Ga.) dropped down a squeeze bunt to score Wootson. One out later, right fielder LaShan Davis (Marietta, Ga.) hit a chopper to the left side, but Horne and UGA third baseman Megan McAllister collided, allowing Osmon to score. Left fielder Natasha Jacob (Coppell, Texas) hit a grounder to McAllister but her throw sailed wide of first base permitting pinch runner Robyn Petrovich (Plantation, Fla.) to score from third.

The Bulldogs broke through for the first run of the day off McDonald in the bottom of the fourth. Chelsea Cantillo came around to score on a double by Jessica Doucette. Canitllo's high chopper in the fifth inning allowed Kellie Middleton to score and make it 3-2.

In the sixth and seventh inning, McDonald and the Florida State stepped up their play and closed out the Bulldogs. With two outs in the sixth, McDonald loaded the base by giving up a single and two walks, but got Charvi Greer to strikeout looking to end the threat. Then in the seventh, Wootson made a tremendous diving catch in foul territory and McDonald struckout Doucette with the tying run on second. Georgia stranded 11 runners on base.

"The defense was phenomenal today," McDonald said. "I couldn't have asked for a better defense today, that might be the best we've played. I wasn't at my best today, but the defense came through for me. It's a good feeling knowing you've got a great defense and offense behind you."

Nearly all seven of FSU's hits came from a trio of players as Jacob, Osmon and Davis each collected a pair. Wood was the only player credited with an RBI as the other two runs scored on errors. Jacob moved past Shamalene Wilson (1996) for third on the FSU single-season charts with her 92nd hit. Also moving up the single-season lists was McDonald. By throwing seven innings, she took over third place with 313.2 innings pitched and her 30th win ties Renee Espinoza for sixth.

NCAA Regional Title Comes Down to One Game As No. 8 Georgia Beats FSU Softball 3-1.

ATHENS, GA - It's a position the Florida State University softball team didn't want to get in, but it's one they overcome in the past. Eighth-ranked Georgia scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to beat the Seminoles 3-1 and force a deciding game in the Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament. The winner of Sunday's (May 21) second game will advance to the Super Regional.

Florida State dropped to 43-28, while the Bulldogs improved 54-15.

Despite giving up no earned runs, Florida State starter Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) was saddled with the loss as she dropped to 30-17. Fielding miscues allowed Georgia to take the lead in the sixth. With one out and a runner on first after a spectacular diving catch by catcher BillieAnne Gay (Tallahassee, Fla.), Alicart's throw to second was wide of the base, giving Victoria Sanders third. Another Alicart error allowed the first run to score and put runners on second and third. Megan McAllister hit a sacrifice fly to score pinch runner Sojourner Moody to score the winning run. Georgia tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

During the semifinals of the ACC Tournament last week, Florida State lost the first game to Georgia Tech, but rallied to win the second game and advance to the championship game. The last time the Seminoles went into the NCAA regional final undefeated was 2004. That year FSU lost the first game to Oregon, but came back to win the second contest 2-0 and advance to the Women's College World Series.

Super Regional Bound! Seminole Softball Beats No. 8 Georgia 2-0 To Advance in NCAA Tournament.

ATHENS, GA - A month ago, the Florida State University softball team was on the brink of not even making the NCAA Tournament, let alone entertaining the idea of advancing to the super regional. Now the Seminoles are two wins away from their eighth Women's College World Series as they beat No. 8 Georgia, 2-0, on Sunday (May 21) win the Athens Regional of the NCAA Tournament and move on to the Super Regional.

Up next for Florida State is the sixth-seed Arizona State in Tempe, Ariz. Game dates and times will be announced on Monday. The Seminoles beat the Sun Devils 1-0 in nine innings on March 16 at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

"I'm just proud of our kids and proud of their heart in bouncing back after that early loss," FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. "It was a battle. I think both games were close, and both games could have been won by either team. I'm glad that we came in only having to win one game today."

The victory improves Florida State's record to 44-28 on the year as FSU has bettered last year's record by nine games. Georgia ends the year at 54-15.

Even though she was making her first start since April 1, after missing 22 games with an illness, freshman pitcher Melissa May (San Diego, Calif.) was spectacular for the Seminoles. The left-hander threw a three-hit shut out to improve to 8-6. May struck out four batters and issued just one walk. Taking the loss was the Bulldogs Kasi Carroll as she dropped to 30-7.

"I was really excited when they told me I was going to go in," May said. "To be able to come in after Tiffany was able to carry us her and to be able to come through for her when she was really tired meant a lot to me. I was so nervous, but it was a lot of fun, and I knew my defense was going to be there for me."

All the scoring Florida State would end up needing came in the top of the third inning. The Seminoles took a 1-0 lead when Shortstop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela) drilled an opposite field home run over the fence in right field.

Florida State got a big break in the top of the seven as it added an insurance run. With one out, pinch hitter Carey Galuppi (Boca Raton, Fla.) punch a ball into right field. Right fielder LaShaun Davis (Marietta, Ga.) followed with a chopper that bounced off the glove of UGA second baseman Chelsea Cantillo and ricocheted into right field. Galuppi raced to third and came around to score when right fielder Victoria Sanders bobbled the ball.

From there, May shut the door on the Bulldogs, educing a ground out and a pair of strikeouts, including shortstop Alison Horne for the final out. The freshman did not allow a batter to get past second base the entire game and only one UGA runner got into scoring position.

"I'm just so proud of her right now," Graf said of May. "I have to tell you, to come into a situation like this and to perform the way she did, the composure for a freshman that hasn't thrown many games and to come in for a must-win situation, she carried us here today and got us to Super Regionals."

Florida State is only ACC team to make it to the Super Regional and one of only two unranked teams (UMASS) to advance.

FSU Softball Must Sweep Saturday's Games To Get To WCWS After Losing 6-1 to No. 7 Arizona State.

TEMPE, AZ - During its outstanding postseason run, the Florida State University softball team has been able to put pressure on its opponents by winning early. Unfortunately, the Seminoles find themselves on the other end of the spectrum in the NCAA Tournament Super Regional after dropping game one to No. 7 Arizona State 6-1 on Friday (May 26).

In order to advance to the WCWS, the Seminoles must now win both games on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for 8 p.m. (EST). The loss dropped FSU to 44-29 on the year. Arizona State improved to 51-13.

"It's not how we wanted to start and how we wanted to play the first game," FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. "We let them jump ahead of us with an error to the first batter and then the next batter hit a home run. We started to be a little bit more patient at the plate and put the bat on the ball better as the game wore on, but Arizona State came out fired up and they got the job done."

Taking the loss for the Seminoles was starter Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.) as she dropped to 30-18. The sophomore right-hander threw her ACC-best 39th complete game, but gave up six runs, five earned on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Getting the victory for the Sun Devils was Katie Burkhart as she improved to 28-6.

Even though she was saddled with the loss, McDonald made some history with her performance. She set a new Atlantic Coast Conference and FSU record with 326.2 innings pitched, breaking the old mark of 323.0 set by former FSU All-American Leslie Malerich.

Arizona State got to McDonald early as Jessica Mapes reached on an error to lead off the first then Kaitlin Cochran hit a two-run home run. The long ball and free passes were McDonald's kryptonite in the third as she issued a pair of walks then gave up a two-out grand slam to Bianca Cruz to make it 6-0 in ASU's favor.

The Seminoles picked up a pair of hits in the second inning, but couldn't sustain a rally. Second baseman Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) led off with a single, but was doubled up on a line drive by Brittany Osmon (San Diego, Calif.). Catcher BillieAnne Gay (Tallahassee, Fla.) came back with a single up the middle, but designated hitter Melissa Wood (Lilburn, Ga.) stuck out looking to end the inning.

Florida State came through with its first run in the fourth inning. With two outs, Wootson picked up her second hit of the game as she cleared the left field fence with her seventh home run of the game. Wootson and Gay accounted for all of FSU's hits at Wootson went 3-for-3 and Gay matched a career-high with a pair of hits.

Magical Postseason Run Ends For FSU Softball With 5-1 Loss to No. 7 Arizona State in Super Regionals.

TEMPE, AZ - Some didn't expect them to make the NCAA Tournament and many thought they would never get out of the regional, but the Florida State University softball team proved all the naysayers wrong. The Seminoles came alive at the right time and advanced to the NCAA Super Regional, but their stellar run was ended Saturday (May 27) as they lost 5-1 to No. 7 Arizona State.

The loss ended Florida State's season with a 44-30 record. It was the 24th season the Seminoles had reached 40 wins and the 16th in the last 17 seasons. Arizona State moves on to the Women's College World Series with 52-13 record.

"I told the kids that I'm really proud of them," FSU head coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. "There are only 16 teams remaining out of 300 or so Division I programs so to make it this far is quite an accomplishment. We don't lose too much to graduation and we've got some good young kids coming in so I think it's a great experience for our players. We went a step farther than we did last year and I told them next year we can go that extra step."

Taking the loss was freshman Melissa May (San Diego, Calif.) as her ledger dropped to 8-7. The rookie was the winning pitcher in the Seminoles' 2-0 victory over No. 8 Georgia to get FSU to the Super Regional. The left-hander surrendered two unearned runs to the Sun Devils on three hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Picking up her second victory over Florida State was Katie Burkhart as she improved to 29-6.

"Mel (May) did a great job, but the defense wasn't what we're used to," Graf added. "She did a great job of keeping her composure. She pitched to where the defense should have made some plays to keep her in the game."

Sophomore Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash) came on in relief of May in the fifth, giving up three runs, but only one earned, with three strikeouts. Her national leading 329.1 innings pitched this season is an Atlantic Coast Conference and Florida State single-season record. The right-hander's 57 appearances are second in FSU lore.

Down 4-0 in the sixth, Florida State started to mount a comeback. Right fielder LaShaun Davis (Marietta, Ga.) and left fielder Natasha Jacob (Coppell, Texas), hit back-to-back singles. Shortstop Yuruby Alicart extended her FSU single-season record with her 19th double to score Davis. Unfortunately, Veronica Wootson (Fontana, Calif.) struck out and first baseman Brittany Osmon (San Diego, Calif.) was robbed on a shallow pop fly to end the threat.

Errors proved to be the downfall of the Seminoles as they committed a season-high six miscues. After escaping the first inning after a pair of errors by Wootson that put runners on second and third, May pitched solid the next three innings, retiring six of the next eight batters she faced. The lefty worked out of a jam in the fourth, but wouldn't be as fortunate in the fifth.

"We got beat by a better team this weekend," Graf noted. "They put the ball in play and did what they had to do to win. I didn't feel that we played our best; we made way too many errors today. Our hitters were trying a little too hard to make the big play instead of putting the bat on the ball."

May hit the leadoff batter in the fifth then issued a single. Kaitlin Cochran was intentionally walked to load the bases then May got Rhiannon Baca to pop out. The next batter hit a sharp ball to Alicart at shortstop, but after bobbling the ball, her throw to home hit the runner, allowing the first run to score. May induced another grounder, but catcher BillieAnne Gay (Tallahassee, Fla.) couldn't hold on as another run scored.

The Seminoles appeared to be out of the sixth unscathed after a two-out hit and a hit batter, but the throw from third baseman Michelle Snyder (Wenatchee, Wash.) to first hit the runner, allowing two more runs to score. The final ASU run came across on a solo home run by Mindy Cowles in the seventh.

Davis led the way with a pair of hits, including a double in the third inning. Jacob and Gay both picked up base hits in their final collegiate at-bats. Jacob finished her stellar career sixth in ACC history, and fourth in Seminole lore, with 271 hits. She's also in the FSU top ten in at-bats (4th - 796), stolen base (6th - 69), runs (7th - 147), games (8th - 264), walks (8th - 74) and triples (10th - 15).

The future looks bright for the Seminoles as they bring back eight of 10 positions players and all three pitchers for next season.
