FSU Trio Named 2018 United Soccer Coaches All-Americans.
Castellanos, Zhao and Kuikka earn national honors on Thursday.

November 29, 2018

CARY, N.C. – Helping lead the Seminoles to the College Cup in all three phases of the field, forward Deyna Castellanos, midfielder Yujie Zhao and defender Natalia Kuikka received national honors on Thursday night as the United Soccer Coaches announced their 2018 All-American Teams.

Castellanos and Zhao were named to the Second Team, while Kuikka earned Third Team accolades. It is the second All-American honor for both Castellanos and Kuikka as they were recognized in 2017 and 2016, respectively.

Florida State placed three student-athletes on the United Soccer Coaches All-American teams for the seventh time in school history, joining 2016, 2014, 2012, 2011, 2008 and 2006. The 2008 squad is the only Seminole team to receive four United Soccer Coaches All-American honors.

The Seminoles are one of five schools to have at least three United Soccer Coaches All-Americans – joining Georgetown, North Carolina, Stanford and USC. The Cardinal and the Trojans top the list with four selections each.

Castellanos leads the Seminoles with 26 points on 10 goals and six assists. She has tallied five game-winning goals, including three against ranked teams – No. 6 Virginia, No. 11 Virginia and No. 14 Penn State. She now has 15 game-winning goals, which ranks second all-time in FSU history.

Kuikka has anchored Seminole defense that ranks eighth in the country with a 0.505 goals against average. The senior captain has helped FSU record 14 shutouts and a 7-1-2 record against ranked opponents this season, including victories over No. 2 UCLA, No. 3 North Carolina, No. 5 Duke and No. 6 Virginia.

Zhao has shined in her first season of collegiate soccer as she ranks second on the team with seven goals and is third with five assists. Four of her seven goals have been game-winners, and her penalty kick conversion against No. 6 USC on November 18 sent the Seminoles to the NCAA quarterfinals.

Zhao, Krikorian Highlight 2018 TopDrawerSoccer Postseason Awards.
Florida State earns National Freshman and Coach of the Year honors, as six different Seminoles are recognized.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Capping off a national championship season, Florida State soccer was well represented in the 2018 TopDrawerSoccer Postseason Awards, as Yujie Zhao earned National Freshman of the Year honors, while head coach Mark Krikorian was named National Coach of the Year.

Overall, six different Seminoles earned national accolades as Natalia Kuikka was placed on the Best XI Second Team and Deyna Castellanos was chosen for the Best XI Third Team. Jaelin Howell joined Zhao on the Freshman Best XI First Team, while goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger was named to the Freshman Best XI Second Team.

It marks the second time that Florida State has had a player named National Freshman of the Year by TopDrawerSoccer, as Megan Connolly was recognized in 2015. Overall, it is the fourth National Freshman of the Year award for the Seminoles as Amanda DaCosta (Soccer Buzz) and Sanna Talonen (Soccer America) were each honored in 2007.

Zhao shined in her first year of collegiate soccer, playing in 26 games with 23 starts and finishing second on the team with 19 points on seven goals and five assists. She had four game-winning goals and two game-winning assists and was a catalyst in the midfield for the Seminoles this season. The Shanghai, China native also earned United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American, ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC First Team honors this season.

Krikorian earned his fourth National Coach of the Year honor in 2018 and his first from TopDrawerSoccer. He received the award in 2005 from Soccer America and again in 2014 from Soccer America and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Through his 14 seasons at Florida State, he has led the Seminoles to a record of 258-60-30, with two NCAA National Championships, six ACC Championships, and 12 trips to the NCAA Quarterfinals to be one of the final eight teams playing for a title. With wins over No. 1 Stanford and No. 3 North Carolina in the 2018 College Cup, Krikorian has improved his record against ranked teams to 102-47-18, dating back to 2005

Kuikka anchored the Seminole defense that recorded 16 shutouts on the season, and allowed just 13 goals over 27 matches. The Kemi, Finland native also added two goals and an assists in 2018, including the game-winning goal against Vanderbilt on August 16. Kuikka was also named a United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American.

Castellanos posted another All-American season as the junior forward led the team with 28 points on 10 goals and eight assists, including five game-winning goals and assisting on two of FSU’s three goals scored at the 2018 College Cup.

Howell garnered 2018 College Cup Most Outstanding Player on Defense honors as the freshman controlled the midfield with strong possession and physical play. Offensively on the season, she scored one goal and had four assists, and earned a spot on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region Third Team, All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Freshman Team.

Bollinger was outstanding in goal for the Seminoles in her 20 matches played this season. A redshirt freshman from Melbourne, Fla., Bollinger tallied 10 shutouts and allowed just nine goals for a 0.45 goals-against average. She finished the year ranked in the top 15 in the NCAA in both categories.

A goal by Natalia Kuikka in the 56th minute was all the Seminoles needed in the 1-0 win on Thursday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – It was the start of a new season, but it was the same standard of Florida State soccer on display Thursday night as the No. 10 Seminoles (1-0-0) controlled possession and offensive chances throughout the match, earning a 1-0 win over RV Vanderbilt (0-1-0) to open 2018 at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

The Noles outshot the Commodores 12-2 and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. FSU did not allow Vanderbilt to get a corner kick until the 76th minute and the first shot of the game for the Commodores came in the 78th minute.

Senior Natalia Kuikka scored the game-winner in the 56th minute, the eighth goal of her career for the season-opening win. Florida State improved to 13-1-0 on opening day under head coach Mark Krikorian, including a mark of 8-0-0 at home. Overall, the Noles have won 11 straight season openers, outscoring the opposition by a combined score of 27-3.

“Throughout the course of the first half and, also in the second half, we had some pretty good looks at the goal,” said Krikorian. “Credit to Vanderbilt’s kids. They fought and competed and their goalkeeper was in a good position and we were a bit unlucky once or twice, as well. Fortunately for us, we had very good execution and a great finish on the goal and we were able to sneak away with a 1-0 win.”

The Noles nearly jumped out to an early lead as Kuikka sent a long ball from the backline up the right side to Megan Connolly in the fifth minute, and the senior’s cross found Kristen McFarland streaking through the box. However, the redshirt sophomore’s shot went off the crossbar and was cleared away.

Connolly was on the end of a cross by Kaycie Tillman in the 19th minute, but her header from near the penalty spot went just over the goal.

Gloriana Villalobos was fouled near the top of the box in the 36th minute and the sophomore took the free kick over the wall, but it was saved by Vanderbilt GK Lauren Demarchi.

The only offensive threat that Vanderbilt created in the first half came in the 39th minute as Madison Elwell took the ball down the left side and created space for a cross, but Kuikka easily cleared the ball as the FSU defense recovered.

In her first game back after missing 2017 with an injury, Malia Berkely was back to full form and lasered a shot from 20 yards in the 42nd minute that required a leaping punch save from Demarchi to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.

Out of the break, Vanderbilt brought in Taiana Tolleson as its goalkeeper for the second half and the Noles put pressure on early with three corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the period.

FSU scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute as Berkely found Kuikka in the box and the senior drove a low shot to the left and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

McFarland narrowly missed another goal in the 60th minute as she worked her way through the front of the penalty box and put a shot past the goalkeeper, but it rolled wide left of the goal.

Redshirt freshman Brooke Bollinger made the first save of her career in the 78th minute on a header from VU’s Peyton Cutshall, but made an outstanding play in the 85th minute to help secure the win. After a free kick from near midfield, Kaylann Boyd found space in the penalty box on the right, turned and lined a shot inside the far post, but Bollinger was able to get a hand on it to redirect it into the post and it was eventually cleared away by the Seminole defense in what was Vanderbilt’s final offensive chance.

“Brooke had a clean sheet in her first game and did a very good job for us,” added Krikorian. “Her decision-making was good throughout and I think we are going to see another top-level goalkeeper emerge and develop, much like Cassie Miller and Kelsey Wys did, as well as the others before them.”

Seminoles Dominate Troy In 5-0 Shutout.
Florida State was in control from the first whistle in Sunday’s win.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – In a full team effort that saw 21 players in action in the Garnet and Gold, the Seminoles closed out opening weekend on a high note as No. 10 Florida State (2-0-0) posted a 5-0 victory over Troy (1-1-0) on Sunday evening at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Freshman Kristina Lynch shined on the offensive end for the Noles, scoring the first two goals of her career, and fellow freshman Yujie Zhao added her first goal as well on a penalty kick.

“We knew that this weekend we were going to have some good, hard competition,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “They came in here and gave us a great opening weekend. We saw some very good things, but also learned some things about ourselves that we are going to have to get better at. So by and large, good opening weekend for us and now we get to move on and go on the road.”

Much like on Thursday night, an early FSU attack ended up with a shot off the crossbar as redshirt sophomore Malia Berkely sent a ball into the box and senior Megan Connolly headed the ball on frame, but a punch save by Troy’s Acelya Aydogmus pushed the ball up into the crossbar and away.

Freshman Kirsten Pavlisko had a solid chance in the eighth minute, driving from the left across the top of the box and sending a shot that sailed just high.

Lynch put the Seminoles on the board in the 13th minute as Berkely sent a long ball down the left side and the freshman worked into the box and fired the ball into the net from 15 yards to put FSU up 1-0.

Strong play in the box by Dallas Dorosy led to the second goal of the game for Florida State as the senior worked into position for a Lynch cross in the 27th minute, but was taken down by the Troy defenders for a penalty kick. Connolly stepped to the spot and converted the PK for a 2-0 Seminole advantage.

Berkely continued to serve several dangerous balls to give FSU quality scoring chances, but saves from Aydogmus stopped strong shots by Macayla Edwards in the 36th minute and Connolly in the 38th minute.

For the second-straight game, the Florida State defense did not allow a shot or a corner kick in the first half and the only quality offensive threat for the Trojans came off the opening kickoff for the second half as Natalie Melillo worked down the left side and took a shot that was easily saved by FSU’s Brooke Bollinger in the 46th minute.

Lynch narrowly missed a goal a minute later from a low cross by Connolly that went just over the crossbar, but the duo combined for the third goal of the game at 47:55 as Connolly launched a pass from the right toward the far post and Lynch got her head on it for a 3-0 Seminole lead.

Connolly was fouled as she dribbled through the box in the 74th minute, allowing Zhao to extend the lead to 4-0 after converting the penalty kick.

Freshman Jaelin Howell collected a loose ball near the top of the box in the 81st minute and drove a shot that required an impressive save away for a corner. Berkely’s service into the six-yard box bounced off several players before finding Olivia Bergau in face for the senior to put in the net for her first goal of the season.

Caroline Jeffers made her first appearance for Florida State and played the final eight minutes in goal for the Noles, as FSU controlled possession the rest of the way for the 5-0 victory.

Overall, the Seminoles outshot the Trojans 28-1 and posted 15 shots on goal. FSU also held a 9-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Another Shutout For FSU Soccer As Noles Blank Badgers.
The No. 6 Seminoles posted a 3-0 win on the road at Wisconsin on Thursday night.

MADISON, Wisc. – For the third game in a row to start the 2018 season, the Seminole defense recorded a clean sheet as No. 6 Florida State (3-0-0) posted a 3-0 win on the road at Wisconsin (1-1-0) on Thursday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The three FSU goals came from three different players as Yujie Zhao, Dallas Dorosy and Deyna Castellanos each recorded a goal on the night.

“We knew coming out here that Wisconsin was going to present a different style of play and make it very difficult for us to establish much rhythm in the way we want to play,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “Credit to them. They are a hard team to play against. They are very organized, very well coached and very disciplined. It took our best effort to leave here with a win.”

Wisconsin put the pressure on early, with a pair of corner kicks in the first 12 minutes, but only managed one shot on a header by Maia Cella that went high.

The Noles opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Jaelin Howell picked up a loose ball in the midfield and dribbled up the middle before sending a pass to Kristen McFarland near the top of the box on the left. She found Yujie Zhao near the penalty spot and the freshman slotted her shot over the outstretched leg of Wisconsin goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer for her second goal of the season.

The first substitutes for the Seminoles came in the 25th minute as Deyna Castellanos and Dallas Dorosy entered and made an immediate impact in the match. Castellanos took a shot at 25:24 that was wide of the net, and Dorosy made it 2-0 Seminoles in the 27th minute after Gabby Carle sent in a cross from the right and the senior lined a shot under the keeper for her first goal of the season.

Wisconsin threatened near the end of first half with a free kick from near midfield that was sent into the six-yard box. FSU goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger jumped and punched the ball away and eventually dove on the loose ball in front of the net.

The Badgers best offensive chance of the game came in the 64th minute as Cella slipped a ball through the middle for Jordan McNeese, but her shot from 15 yards was wide of the goal.

The Seminoles closed out the scoring in the 74th minute as Dorosy slid around the Wisconsin defenders on the end line before finding Castellanos in the middle of the penalty box for an easy score and the 3-0 win. The goal was Castellanos’ first of the season and 27th of her career, moving her into a tie for ninth all-time in Florida State with Berglind Thorvaldsdottir (2012-15) as the Venezuela native is just three games into her junior season.

For the game, the Seminoles held a 6-4 advantage in shots, while Wisconsin had four corner kicks to FSU’s three.

Seminoles Set Record With Shutout Of Middle Tennessee.
No. 6 Florida State continues its perfect start to the season with a 3-0 win over the Blue Raiders.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Setting a program record with its fourth-consecutive shutout to start the season, No. 6 Florida State (4-0-0) remained perfect defensively with a 3-0 victory over Middle Tennessee (2-2-0) on Sunday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The four-match shutout streak is tied for the sixth-longest in school history.

The Seminoles surpass the marks set by the 2009, 2010 and 2016 teams of three clean sheets to start the season, before each allowed a goal in the fourth game. Overall, FSU has allowed only one goal in its last 667:12 of play, dating back to the 2017 season, with the lone goal in that span coming on the road at No. 1-ranked, and eventual national champion, Stanford.

“Overall it was a solid performance,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “I wouldn’t say it was our finest day, but a lot of credit there goes to Middle Tennessee. They came out and were a very organized team with a good game plan. I don’t know that we brought the same level of intensity and fight today that we need to if we want to be a top-level team. But at the end of the day, it is a shutout and we put the ball in the back of the net, so it is pretty good from that point of view.”

The Seminole freshmen directed the FSU offense in the early going as Yujie Zhao found Kristina Lynch for a shot in the second minute and Kirsten Pavlisko worked forward for a strong attempt at 5:28 and both were saved by Middle Tennessee goalkeeper Sydney Chalcraft.

Freshman Jaelin Howell recorded her first career goal for the Noles in the eighth minute after Malia Berkely worked down the right side, passed to Deyna Castellanos who sent a cross to the back post for an easy finish.

Middle Tennessee nearly equalized in the 10th minute as the Blue Raiders picked up a loose ball in the midfield and counterattacked through the middle for a shot by Amber Hoot from 15 yards. FSU redshirt freshman GK Brooke Bollinger got a strong hand on the ball to deflect it and eventually secure possession.

The Blue Raiders earned a corner kick in the 23rd minute, but Bollinger was able to jump above the fray and punch the ball away from danger.

Deyna Castellanos took a free kick for the Seminoles from 25 yards in the 25th minute, and her shot bent over the wall but was saved by Chalcraft. Senior Kaycie Tillman slipped a nice pass into Dallas Dorosy at the top of the box in the 33rd minute and the senior spun around her defender and created space for a shot from 15 yards that was just over the crossbar.

Middle Tennessee pressured right into the intermission as Hannah Tillet took a shot from 20 yards that blocked away for a corner in the 45th minute. On the ensuing service, Sam Debien found Gwen Breslin on the far post, but Bollinger was in perfect position to catch the shot and allow the Noles to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, Florida State controlled possession and took four shots in the opening eight minutes of the half, including the first goal of the season for Tillman. The senior midfielder worked through traffic in the center of the field and lined a shot from the top of the box to put FSU up 2-0 at 51:48.

Dorosy made it a 3-0 Seminole advantage in the 63rd minute as FSU’s fifth corner kick of the game from Berkely was sent to the top of the six-yard box for Dorosy to get a head on and beat the keeper for her second goal of the season.

Dorosy nearly added additional goals in the 80th and 82nd minutes, but her shots rolled just wide of the goal each time.

The Seminole defense held the Blue Raiders at bay in the second half, not allowing a shot in the final 45 minutes, as FSU ended the game with a 20-3 advantage in the category, including 10 shots on goal. The Noles also led 6-3 in corner kicks.

No. 4 FSU And No. 7 USC Ends In Scoreless Draw
The Seminoles held the Trojans to their lowest shot output in regulation since the last time the two teams met (2015).

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – All 1,756 fans that came out to the Seminole Soccer Complex on Friday night were treated to a match that completely lived up to the hype of a Top 10 matchup as No. 4 Florida State (4-0-1) and No. 7 USC (3-0-1) played to a scoreless draw after 110 minutes.

FSU outshot USC 18-6, including 6-1 in shots on goal, but both defenses stood tall when they were needed most. The Noles and Trojans each had five corner kicks in the draw.

It was the lowest shot total for USC since they tallied six in a 1-0 victory over Georgetown in the 2016 College Cup semifinals, and the four shots in regulation by the Trojans on Friday night were the fewest since they recorded two shots in the most recent meeting of Florida State and USC on August 23, 2015, as the Noles posted a 1-0 victory in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Seminoles continued their scoreless streak to start the season with their fifth shutout in a row and have not allowed a goal in their last 481:36, dating back to a 79th minute goal on the road at No. 1 Stanford in the third round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The five consecutive shutouts ranks in a tie for fourth-longest in school history, while the scoreless streak is the seventh-longest for Florida State.

“We knew that when we scheduled this pair of games with USC and UCLA that we were going to have very good opponents, and USC was excellent tonight,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “It was a very good game and I think that the fans enjoyed the quality of play and the speed of the game with chances on both ends. At the end of the day, both teams’ defending was a little better than the teams’ attacking. We were treated to some very good soccer with some very good players on the field.”

Florida State controlled most of the possession in the first 30 minutes of the match, but struggled to break through the final third. The Seminoles earned their first corner kick in the 13th minute, and the service found Kristina Lynch, but her header was high of the goal.

USC tried to slide a ball through the midfield in the 25th minute, but a deflection off a Florida State defender left the ball in a dangerous position, but Brooke Bollinger smartly came off her line to dive on the ball to end the threat.

The entire Florida State backline of Kirsten Pavlisko, Malia Berkely, Anna Patten and Gabby Carle each had timely tackles on USC possessions in the first half to limit the Trojans’ chances. The best opportunity for USC in the first half came in the 34th minute as a counterattack by Tara McKeown found Penelope Hocking behind the FSU line, but the shot was directly at Bollinger for the save.

FSU had a quality chance in the 45th minute as USC’s Jalen Woodward fouled Gloriana Villalobos and was shown a yellow card. The free kick from 20 yards on the left was taken by Villalobos, but the shot was just wide as the game went to halftime tied at 0-0.

Coming out of the break, the Trojans pressured early with a pair of corner kicks and a shot that was blocked in the first seven minutes.

Carle lined a shot from 25 yards in the 58th minute and Villalobos took a shot from the top of the box in the 64th minute that each required saves from USC’s Kaylie Collins to keep the game scoreless.

Another dangerous counterattack for the Trojans came in the 76th minute as Hocking found Leah Pruitt, but Bollinger read the play well and dove to secure the ball before Pruitt could get a shot off. A breakaway by Hocking a minute later resulted in a shot that was wide left.

Deyna Castellanos nearly put the ball into the net on a free kick from 25 yards on the left in the 83rd minute as the Venezuela native’s shot bent up into the upper right corner but was swatted away on an outstanding leaping save by USC’s Collins. Carle found Kaycie Tillman near the top of the box just two minutes later and the senior’s shot narrowly went over the crossbar as the game went to overtime.

In the first overtime, FSU freshman Yujie Zhao took a free kick in the 91st minute that was blocked and started a counterattack for the Trojans. The Seminole defense did a good job of getting back as Pavlisko and Bollinger helped breakup the transition as the ball safely rolled over the end line for a goal kick.

The Trojans had a strong chance in the 99th minute, but the shot from Natalie Jacobs in the penalty box was blocked away by Patten to force a second overtime.

In the final 10 minutes, the best scoring chance for either side came for the Seminoles in the 108th minute as Berkely worked through the midfield and ripped a shot from 25 yards on the right that hit the crossbar.

Seminoles Dominate No. 2 UCLA In 4-1 Victory.
Florida State remains unbeaten after impressive win on Sunday night.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – After the start of the game delayed by 65 minutes due to a lightning warning, once play got underway, No. 4 Florida State (5-0-1) took it to No. 2 UCLA (2-1-1) with a dominant 4-1 victory on Sunday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Yujie Zhao led the Seminoles with four points on a goal and two assists, while all four goals and three of the assists were recorded by freshmen or sophomores.

It marked the first time that UCLA had allowed four goals since a 4-3 loss to Florida on August 28, 2016, and it was the largest margin of victory of any school over the Bruins since a 7-0 loss by UCLA at Cal on October 29, 2015.

UCLA’s lone goal in the 38th minute snapped Florida State’s scoreless streak at 519:03 which dated back to the 2017 season. The streak sits as the fourth-longest streak in program history.

“I thought our collective defending throughout the night was pretty good,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “That was a really good we played tonight. They have a lot of top, top level players and are a well-coached team. So for us to come out on top makes it a good weekend for us. If someone would have told me before the weekend we’d get a win and a draw, I’d think that would be a good weekend for us. To win and score some nice goals was quite pleasing as well.”

Florida State started strong as Kristen McFarland picked off a ball in the midfield in the fifth minute and drove to the endline, but her cross was secured by UCLA goalkeeper Teagan Micah.

Zhao nearly opened the scoring in the 10th minute, as Kristina Lynch slid a pass to the top of the box, but the freshman’s shot was saved.

Shortly after, Zhao helped create the game’s first goal as she slipped a pass through to Deyna Castellanos and her shot was slapped away for a Seminole corner. The service went to Zhao and she collected the ball and sent a long cross to the far post for Anna Patten to head into the net at 11:05.

UCLA had their share of possession throughout the first half, but sent several lonely crosses into an empty penalty box that were easily cleared away. The Bruins did have a quality chance in the 25th minute as Ashley Sanchez passed the ball to Anika Rodriguez behind the Seminole backline, and the UCLA forward touched the ball past FSU GK Brooke Bollinger, but it was too strong as by the time she caught back up to it, she didn’t have an angle from near the endline on the open goal and there were no teammates around for her pass attempt.

FSU defender Malia Berkely had a nice tackle on a UCLA counterattack in the 28th minute to eliminate a threat, and the Bruins managed a shot at 29:33 by Sanchez from 20 yards that was saved by Bollinger.

The Seminoles extended their lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute as Kirsten Pavlisko brought the ball up from the backline and the UCLA defenders did a great job of cutting off her passing lanes, however they did a poor job of stopping the ball as the freshman cut through the middle of the field unabated and ripped a shot from just inside the penalty box for her first goal of the season.

The Bruins narrowed the Seminole lead in the 38th minute as a throw-in deep in their attacking third bounced off some players and out toward Maricarmen Reyes who volleyed a shot inside the near post and made it 2-1 FSU.

McFarland recorded her first goal of the season at 49:00 after Berkely worked through the midfield and passed to Zhao for a perfect touch to McFarland to finish from the top of the box to put the Seminoles up 3-1.

The competition was fierce throughout the middle of the second half, but there were only two shots takes from the 50th to 80th minute on a pair of long-range shots by Castellanos where one was wide and one was saved.

An outstanding stop by Bollinger kept the score at 3-1 in the 81st minute as a corner kick from the right was headed by Olivia Athens back to Viviana Villacorta on the left side in the six-yard box, and her shot skipped under the FSU defense and a diving save kept the ball out of the net.

UCLA’s Sanchez again worked into a dangerous position in the 85th minute, but quality defense by Patten and Pavlisko took the ball away and ended the chance.

The final goal of the night was a laser from Zhao from 25 yards as Macayla Edwards collected a ball near the midfield circle and sent a pass to Zhao, who turned and blasted her third goal of the season into the upper corner for the 4-1 final score.

The Seminoles outshot the Bruins, 11-7, including 10-5 in shots on goal. UCLA held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks.

FSU Blanks Gators In Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown.
The No. 3 Seminoles earned a 1-0 victory over Florida on Friday night.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Battling an in-state rival, along with the elements throughout a 47-minute lightning delay in the second half, No. 3 Florida State (6-0-1) remained unbeaten in 2018 with a 1-0 victory over Florida (2-4-1) on Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The 3,379 fans on hand marked the third-largest home crowd in program history.

Kristen McFarland scored the game-winner in the 88th minute, putting away a rebound off a shot from Deyna Castellanos to secure the victory.

The Seminoles have now won five of the last seven matches in the Fresh From Florida Sunshine Showdown and have a combined record of 18-3 in their last 21 games against the SEC, dating back to 2010.

“I thought we had a good performance tonight,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “We weren’t clinical enough around the goal. But for the most part, the build-up was good, the play in the midfield was pretty good and we got it around the goal, though maybe some of the shots were a little naïve.

“It took us a long time to crack the code and put one in the net. McFarland is an aggressive kid and is responsible in the way she plays. Her following up the shot and burying her chance at the end was vital for us.”

The Seminoles earned a quick corner in the second minute of the match, but Jaelin Howell’s header was wide of the goal.

Florida earned their only shot of the first half in the 10th minute on a free kick from the left side by Briana Solis that was saved by FSU GK Brooke Bollinger.

The Noles created a few more opportunities over the next 15 minutes on a pair of corner kicks, as well as two shots by Castellanos, but the score remained tied.

Sophomore Gabby Carle made a nice play on the left in the 33rd minute, driving into the box, but her shot was blocked by the UF defense. Carle had the best scoring chance of the first half a few minutes later as Anna Patten sent a cross from the right into the six-yard box on the left at 35:05 and the Canadian native made a great run and headed the ball down that nearly bounced over the keeper, but was punched away for a corner.

Clara Robbins was fouled on the right side near the corner spot in the 39th minute and Malia Berkely’s free kick found Patten for a header, but it was wide of the goal.

UF had a decent scoring chance near the end of the first half as Mayra Pelayo worked down to the endline, but her cross was caught by Bollinger to end the threat.

The second half started uneventfully until lightning struck within eight miles of the Seminole Soccer Complex to put the game into a lightning warning in the 52nd minute. The match was delayed for a total of 47 minutes before play resumed at 9:00 p.m.

The Seminoles came out strong after the delay with seven shots in less than eight minutes, including two from Castellanos that were saved, as well as Berkely’s second shot of the season that has gone off the crossbar.

Florida mounted a counterattack in the 64th minute and Pelayo dropped the ball back to Lais Araujo for a clean shot from 20 yards. FSU’s Bollinger came off her line and punched the ball away with her right fist and it was cleared away from danger by Berkely.

Possibly frustrated from the shot, Araujo was shown a yellow card 11 seconds later after a foul. She was shown another yellow card, along with a red card and was ejected in the 68th minute after taking down Gloriana Villalobos in the midfield, forcing the Gators to play with 10 members for the rest of the match.

Florida State controlled possession through the remainder of the match, but could not effectively break down the Florida defense. An FSU corner was headed wide in the 69th minute, Yujie Zhao’s blast from 20 yards was wide at 73:45 and Natalia Kuikka worked up from the backline for a shot at 83:12 that was blocked.

Howell helped start the scoring chance in the 88th minute by passing through the midfield to Castellanos, who took a shot from 25 yards that was stopped by UF’s GK Kaylan Marckese. She blocked it cleanly in front of her, but McFarland raced to the ball and finished the rebound into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Florida had a last-chance effort with 10 seconds left as a Seminole foul allowed the Gators to take a free kick from midfield. UF’s Marckese took the kick and sent a quality ball into the FSU penalty box, but Bollinger was able to leap and catch the ball to end the game.

Overall, the Seminoles outshot Florida, 23-3, including 9-3 in shots on goal and a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Noles Post Seventh Shutout Of Season With 2-0 Win Over South Alabama.
Florida State remains unbeaten after a victory over the Jaguars on Sunday night.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Posting another clean sheet, No. 3 Florida State (7-0-1) continued its unbeaten start to the 2018 season with a 2-0 victory over South Alabama (2-5-0) on Sunday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. Yujie Zhao and Olivia Bergau each scored second-half goals for FSU in the win.

The eight-match unbeaten streak is the third-longest in school history to start a season and is tied for the ninth-longest overall by the Seminoles.

FSU controlled the game throughout and outshot the Jaguars, 31-4, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“Looking at our schedule before the season, we felt like this may be a hard game for us, coming off of USC, UCLA and Florida with a short turnaround time,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “We expected this to be a tough game for us and knew that if we were to be fortunate to score an earlier goal, the game may have come a little easier. But the longer it stayed 0-0, the harder it became. Overall, our defending was quite good again and limited their opportunities at the goal. Certainly created enough of our own chances to score more than two, but at the end of the day, we’ll walk away satisfied we scored two goals, had a clean sheet and move on to get ready for conference play.”

The Noles tallied 12 shots in the first half and nearly opened the scoring in the third minute as Gabby Carle sent a cross in behind the USA backline for Alexa Orrante, but the timing wasn’t there to get a clean shot from near the penalty spot. Anna Patten found Kristina Lynch just a few minutes later, but her shot was wide of the net.

South Alabama earned a corner in the 15th minute and the ball bounced out to Olivia Wilkes, but her shot went well wide of the goal.

The Noles continued to pressure and had a total of five shots in four minutes during the middle of the first half, with two that were blocked, as well as a header by Jaelin Howell that was saved by USA GK Justice Stanford and also a shot from Dallas Dorosy in the 37th minute that went off the crossbar.

Florida State closed the first half with two outstanding chances, but were unable to break through as Zhao slid a pass through the penalty box for Megan Connolly in the 42nd minute, but a diving save by Stanford kept the game scoreless. Gloriana Villalobos helped set up another chance less than a minute later with a long cross to Connolly on the endline and the senior passed it into Dorosy, but her final touch went just wide of the net.

Coming out of halftime, Malia Berkely chipped a pass for Zhao behind the USA line, but was just too strong for the freshman to get a foot on it in the 46th minute.

The Seminoles continued with a flurry of offense, recording 11 shots and two corner kicks from the 48th to 62nd minute, with two on goal and three blocked by the USA defensive players.

Florida State finally broke through at 62:49 as Carle’s cross from the left into the six-yard box found Zhao, whose header slipped between the keeper and the right post for her fourth goal of the season.

Lynch and Dorosy nearly combined for the second goal of the game as Lynch sent a long ball down the left side for a streaking Dorosy, the senior collected the ball worked into the penalty area and dropped the ball back to Lynch who lined a shot that went off the left post and was cleared in the 80th minute.

A pair of seniors helped seal the victory in the 81st minute as Kaycie Tillman worked her way around USA defenders on the endline and slipped the ball into the six-yard box for Bergau to easily finish for her second goal of the season and post the 2-0 final score.

Florida State Falls To No. 6 UNC, 1-0.
The No. 2 Seminoles are shutout in their first ACC game of the season.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A goal by the Tar Heels in the 29th minute was the difference on Friday night as No. 6 North Carolina (6-2-1, 1-0-0 ACC) earned a 1-0 win over No. 2 Florida State (7-1-1, 0-1-0 ACC) in front of 3,146 at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The crowd was the fourth-largest home attendance in program history.

“I thought that Carolina had an outstanding game plan and their kids executed it,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “It was fairly clear that we weren’t dangerous enough and didn’t create enough situations around the goal. So we’ll go back and reevaluate and get better.

“The fans were great tonight. We’ve had huge crowds for a number of the games, and obviously they came to support us with the intent of winning, but hopefully they feel as though they were treated to a high-level game between two very good teams. Today it just didn’t go our way and Carolina was better than us and they won the game.”

Florida State started strong, pressuring early and taking the first shot of the game as Yujie Zhao lined one wide from 25 yards in the fourth minute. The Seminoles earned a corner in the sixth minute and the service from Deyna Castellanos found Anna Patten in the six-yard box, but her header was high.

Possession lived in the midfield for most of the next 15 minutes until North Carolina took its first shot at 18:04. The Tar Heels had a free kick from their defensive third and UNC GK Samantha Leshnak sent a long ball up and it was headed behind the FSU line by Brianna Pinto for Alessia Russo on the left side. She sent a cross into the box for Bridgette Andrzejewski, but her touch went wide of the goal.

The Tar Heels scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute as Taylor Otto passed to Russo in the midfield, who turned and worked up near the penalty box before sending it to the left for Rachel Jones. The freshman’s shot bounced off the inside of the right post and bounced into the net to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead. It marked the first time in 768:24 of the season that the Seminoles had trailed.

A nifty play by Gabby Carle in the 33rd minute nearly tied the game, as the sophomore collected a pass from Gloriana Villalobos with a back heel kick and slid a pass up for Dallas Dorosy on the left. The senior’s shot from 15 yards went just over the crossbar.

In the second half, the Tar Heels tightened their defense, holding the Seminoles without a shot from the 47th minute to the 75th minute. Florida State was often able to hold possession on UNC’s side of the field, but it was a challenge to create opportunities in the penalty box as numerous crosses were sent in over that span, but each were unable to find a teammate.

The Noles earned a corner in the 80th minute and Villalobos chipped in a pass for Kaycie Tillman near the six-yard box in the 85th minute, but both chances were ended by UNC’s Leshnak as she jumped to catch the ball each time.

North Carolina outshot Florida State, 12-8, but the Noles held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Deyna Scores Twice In FSU’s 3-0 Win Over Virginia Tech.
The Seminoles earned their eighth shutout of the season on Thursday night against the Hokies.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – With a pair of outstanding goals, junior forward Deyna Castellanos helped No. 7 Florida State (8-1-1, 1-1-0 ACC) post a 3-0 victory over Virginia Tech (4-2-3, 0-1-0 ACC) on Thursday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

It marked the seventh multi-goal game of Castellanos’ career and the junior moved into a tie for sixth place all-time in FSU history with the 28th and 29th goals of her career.

Virginia Tech entered the game having allowed just four goals over 780 minutes on the season, including a penalty kick and an own goal, and hadn’t surrendered a goal in the month of September, but the Seminole offense dominated the match and nearly doubled the Hokies’ goals against average on Thursday night.

“I think that by and large, we came out strong and took control of the game,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “We got ahold of the ball early and played a solid 90 minutes today. We had great contribution off the bench from a lot of players, so I think we walk away feeling pretty good.

“Virginia Tech is a good team, are very well-coached and are very competitive. They are going to win their fair share of games, that’s for sure. But now we turn all of our attention to Boston College.”

Florida State got out to a great start as its first shot of the game went into the back of the net as Castellanos lined up a free kick from 20 yards on the left after a foul to Kristen McFarland and bent the ball over VT goalkeeper Mandy McGlynn and under the crossbar for a quick 1-0 Seminole lead in the fourth minute. It was the quickest goal scored by FSU this season.

Castellanos gave the Noles a quality chance in the 25th minute, as a free kick from 35 yards bounced into and through the six-yard box, but no Seminole was able to get on the end of it.

Virginia Tech took its first shot of the match in the 34th minute as Karlie Johnson’s shot from 20 yards was blocked by Natalia Kuikka at the top of the penalty box. The Hokies had a quality chance in the 37th minute as a loose ball after a throw-in bounced out to Bridget Patch for a shot that was saved by FSU’s Brooke Bollinger.

Florida State made it 2-0 in the 41st minute as Malia Berkely worked through the midfield, found Gloriana Villalobos and the sophomore chipped the ball behind the VT backline for Alexa Orrante to slot into the back of the net. It was her first goal of the season and she became the 13th different Seminole to score a goal in 2018, which is tied for second-most in the NCAA this season, trailing only Mercer (14).

Virginia Tech had its best chance to score coming right out of halftime, as a free kick in the 46th minute was sent into the penalty box, but it was overran by Bollinger and the ball bounced off Yujie Zhao near the penalty spot and headed toward the goal. Senior Natalia Kuikka saved the own goal situation with a diving tackle to clear the ball away to safety.

Another foul to McFarland just outside the penalty box allowed Zhao to send a free kick into the six-yard box in the 54th minute, but Anna Patten’s header was saved by McGlynn.

Virginia Tech created some offense in the 63rd minute as a pair of shots were blocked by Kuikka and Kirsten Pavlisko respectively, but the Hokies could manage any additional threat.

Castellanos showed her skill shortly after as she worked down to the endline on the left, danced through three different Hokie defenders before blasting a shot from 10 yards into the net at 64:02 to put the Seminoles up 3-0.

Florida State allowed Virginia Tech just one shot for the remainder of the game as the Noles controlled possession until the final whistle.

Seminoles Fall At Boston College, 2-1.
Florida State drops its second ACC game of the year with a loss on Sunday afternoon.

NEWTON, Mass. – Facing its sixth team this year that entered the match without a loss, No. 7 Florida State (8-2-1, 1-2-0 ACC) could not find the late equalizer on Sunday and lost by a score of 2-1 on the road at RV Boston College (10-0-0, 2-0-0 ACC). All three goals were scored in the second half, including a penalty kick conversion for both teams.

It was difficult for either squad to create scoring chances in the first half as the match entered intermission tied at 0-0. The Eagles earned three corner kicks in the first eight minutes of the game, but did not get a shot from any of the opportunities.

The first shot for the Noles came in the 10th minute as a free kick was played to Natalia Kuikka at the top of the box and her shot was wide of the net.

Deyna Castellanos had a pair of shots in the 18th and 20th minute, but the first long-range attempt was high, while her second from 15 yards was saved by BC GK Alexis Bryant.

A crazy situation in front of the Seminole goal in the 30th minute resulted in a pair of shots from Boston College. As the Eagles worked the ball up the field, FSU’s Kuikka kicked it back to GK Brooke Bollinger, however she thought it was off a BC player and she dove on the ball at the penalty spot, resulting in an indirect free kick for BC. Instead of setting up its offense, Boston College decided to quickly restart, playing the ball to Jenna Bike, but her shot was immediately saved by Bollinger who was right in front of her and Bike’s follow-up shot on the rebound was wide of the net.

Bollinger came up with another great save in the 40th minute, as Sam Coffey sent a ball through to Carly Leipzig and the forward’s shot was secured by the redshirt freshman.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute as Bike drew a penalty kick as she was taken down in the box on a counterattack. Gaby Carreiro converted the PK for her third goal of the season.

Florida State nearly equalized a few minutes later as a foul to Castellanos just outside of the box allowed the junior to take a free kick in the 53th minute that bent around the wall and required a diving save by Bryant to keep it out of the net.

The Seminoles tied the match at 1-1 in the 74th minute with a penalty kick of their own. Gloriana Villalobos was fouled in the box on the right by Kayla Duran inside the box on the right, allowing Castellanos to convert from the spot for her fourth goal of the year and 30th of her career, which ranks sixth-most in FSU history.

BC quickly took the lead back as a long ball by Emily Langenderfer for Bike was collected at the top of the box at 74:10 and slotted into the net for her first goal of the year.

Jaelin Howell worked down the right side in the 85th minute and sent a great cross in toward the six-yard box for Kristen McFarland, but the redshirt sophomore’s shot was stopped on a diving save by Bryant.

In the 90th minute, Boston College was called for a handball near the top of their penalty box and FSU quickly restarted, sending the ball into Anna Patten for an open chance from 15 yards on the right. BC’s Bryant made another impressive save with her foot to seal the victory for the Eagles.

Seminoles Shutout Notre Dame, 4-0.
No. 10 Florida State had an impressive showing on Thursday night.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Earning their ninth shutout in 12 games so far in 2018, No. 10 Florida State (9-2-1, 2-2-0 ACC) posted a dominant road win on Thursday night with a 4-0 victory at Notre Dame (5-6-0, 1-2-0 ACC). Four different players scored as the Noles controlled the match from start to finish.

“I thought overall it was a really great game for us,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “I think that all of us felt that we didn’t play our finest at Boston College and everyone wanted to come out and do their best today. I think from start to finish that it was a good, solid performance, both on the attacking side and the defending side. It is not easy to win on the road in the ACC and we will feel good coming out of here with three points and without injury.”

Florida State dominated the first half against the Irish and recorded 10 shots with seven on goal and two of the crossbar in the opening 45 minutes.

Natalia Kuikka and Deyna Castellanos combined for a nice run through the middle of the field in the third minute and Kuikka’s shot from 15 yards was saved away for a corner by ND goalkeeper Mattie Interian.

Castellanos helped create the game’s first scoring chance, sending a long ball down the right for Yujie Zhao. The freshman collected the ball on the endline and crossed it back for Kaycie Tillman to finish in the six-yard box for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Eleven minutes later, Castellanos scored her fifth goal of the season as Anna Patten cross from the right came out to the junior at the top of the box for her to line a left-footed shot into the net for a 2-0 Seminole lead in the 24th minute.

Notre Dame had a pair of opportunities in the middle of the first half, with a shot from Sammi Fisher that was saved by FSU’s Brooke Bollinger in the 29th minute, as well as a shot by Jen Westendorf in the 31st minute that went off the crossbar.

Patten put a shot of her own off the crossbar in the 43rd minute after working into the box on the right. The ball bounced down after hitting the bar and narrowly stayed on the field side of the line.

The Seminoles continued their pressure in the second half and maintained the majority of possession. Florida State did not allow a shot to Notre Dame over the final 59:16 in the shutout victory.

Castellanos chipped a ball toward Kristen McFarland in the 65th minute, but it bounced short of her teammate. A Notre Dame defender attempted to head the ball back to its keeper, but did not get enough pace on it. McFarland aggressively followed the play and got to the ball first to poke it into the net for a 3-0 lead.

Megan Connolly came on as a late substitute in the 85th minute and immediately made an impact. She entered to take a corner kick and the service went into the six-yard box for Anna Patten. The sophomore headed the ball down, but it bounced off the post and was cleared away.

As play continued, Tillman drove into the penalty box less than a minute later and played the ball out to Connolly on the right. The senior buried the shot into the net for a 4-0 lead at 85:32.

Florida State held a 17-4 advantage in shots, 9-1 in shots on goal and 6-0 in corner kicks.

Early Goal Carries Clemson To 1-0 Win Over Florida State.
The Seminoles lose their second home match of the season on Thursday night.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Even though Clemson (8-5-0, 3-2-0) only had five shots in the match and one on goal, the Tigers made the most of their opportunity and the goal by Miranda Westlake in the 21st minute was the difference on Friday night in a 1-0 victory over No. 10 Florida State (9-3-1, 2-3-0 ACC).

Following the goal, Florida State controlled the majority of the possession and outshot the Tigers 24-2, including six shots on goal, along with six corner kicks, but were unable to equalize and the Noles lost their second home match of the season.

“Clemson had a very good gameplan, were solid as could be in defending, and took their chance when they had it,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “It was a good free kick and a good header on the back post. We always know in this game, when you are around the box, you need to get the ball on the goal and make the goalkeeper deal with it. I thought we had some very good looks, but didn’t hit the target on them.

“Overall, I thought our kids fought hard, competed hard and there was some nice combination play. Maybe the quality of the crosses or the quality in front of the box wasn’t good enough, but we just have to get better, that’s all.”

The Tigers earned a corner kick and took the first four shots of the match over the first 25 minutes as the teams battled through the midfield.

After scoring its goal, Clemson dropped its defense back into a more compact shape which allowed for the Seminoles to more freely build their offense, but that made it challenging to work into dangerous positions in the final third for FSU.

Florida State put its first strong push together beginning in the 31st minute as Kaycie Tillman slipped the ball into Deyna Castellanos and her strong shot from 15 yards was saved away for a corner by Clemson GK Sandy MacIver. Tillman set up Anna Patten with a similar pass in the 34th minute, and the sophomore’s bending shot was saved and cleared away. Castellanos lined a shot less than a minute later, but it was just wide to the left of the goal.

Coming out of halftime, the Noles earned a quick corner in the 48th minute and the ball bounced back out to Castellanos, who cut down to the endline and sent a pass back into the center for Kristina Lynch inside the six-yard box, but MacIver made a quality save.

In the 51st minute, Yujie Zhao takes a shot from the top of the box that is blocked by a Clemson defender and the comes back to Malia Berkely for a shot that looked destined to slip inside the upper 90 on the right, but an outstanding leaping save by MacIver kept the Noles off the board.

Patten and Zhao connected on a pair of crosses in the 56th and 57th minutes, but the freshman’s headers went high and wide, respectively. Each of the next four shots by the Seminoles over the next 15 minutes, two from Castellanos and one each of Zhao and Natalia Kuikka, were all blocked away by Clemson defenders.

Zhao worked around several defenders at the top of the box in the 75th minute and drove a shot toward the right side of the goal, but another diving save by CU’s MacIver kept the Tigers in front.

Three of the final six shots of the night for the Noles were blocked by Clemson, marking nine of the 24 shots taken by Florida State that were redirected by the Tiger defense.

Seminoles Top Wake Forest On Sunday.
No. 10 Florida State posts its 10th win of the season to close out the weekend.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Scoring a pair of goals in the first 30 minutes, No. 10 Florida State (10-3-1, 3-3-0 ACC) withstood a late rally by Wake Forest (6-6-1, 2-4-0 ACC) as the Noles held on to defeat the Demon Deacons by a score of 2-1 on Sunday at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

“I thought that we came out in the first half and were very, very good,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “We had a nice rhythm in the game, played well and scored a couple of nice goals. I thought we could have had another goal or two, but we didn’t finish those chances. In the second half, credit to Wake Forest as they came out with a great deal of energy and commitment to battle and fight. They put us under some pressure and I don’t think we dealt with it as well as we needed to. Still happy to come away with a win on a hard-fought weekend.”

Kristina Lynch opened the scoring in the fifth minute as the first shot from either team went into the back of the net after the freshman took the ball down the left side, cut behind her defender and worked into the penalty box for a strong shot from 15 yards for her third goal of the season.

Wake Forest had its best scoring chance of the first half in the 15th minute as Vicky Krug’s cross from the endline on the right found Hulda Arnarsdottir in the six-yard box, but her header shot went over the goal.

Anna Patten had a quality chance in the 19th minute after working into space on the right side and received a pass from Kaycie Tillman in the box, but her shot was saved away for an FSU corner.

Patten was key on Florida State’s second goal as the sophomore made a run down the right and Jaelin Howell sent a long ball down near the corner for her. Patten crossed the ball near the penalty spot for Yujie Zhao to finish and put the Noles up 2-0 at 28:10.

Florida State nearly added to its lead in the 37th minute as Malia Berkely found Megan Connolly on the right and the senior midfielder dribbled to the endline before sliding a dangerous ball through the six-yard box that went untouched, just out of reach of a pair of teammates.

The Noles continued to pressure into intermission as FSU recorded three shots in the final three minutes of the first half, all on frame, but Wake Forest GK Nonie Frishette was able to save them all.

In the second half, the Demon Deacons created a strong opportunity in the opening minute as Mariah Lee’s run down the right turned into a cross into the six-yard box that slid under FSU’s Brooke Bollinger as she dove for the ball. Bollinger fought to get back into position and saved Madison Hammond’s shot from eight yards to keep WF off the board.

An FSU foul in the 52nd minute gave Wake Forest a free kick on the left side, near the endline and just outside the penalty box, but Patten was able to clear away the attempted cross.

The Deacs got on the scoreboard with an FSU own goal in the 59th minute. Estelle Laurier took the ball down the right side and cut back into the penalty box and sent a low ball toward her teammates. Berkely extended her leg to block the pass, but the ricochet instead bounced behind her and over Bollinger and into the net, cutting the FSU lead to 2-1.

Wake Forest nearly tied the match in the 70th minute as Giovanna DeMarco slid a dangerous ball through the penalty box and multiple shot attempts by WF players missed the ball and FSU eventually took possession to end the threat.

Zhao almost scored her second goal in the 72nd minute as the freshman’s redirection of a low cross from Connolly bounced off the left post and was secured by WF’s Frishette.

The Demon Deacons were given a pair of free kicks late in the match in their offensive third, but neither shot was on goal as the first went high and the second went into the side netting.

Overall, FSU outshot Wake by a total of 14-7, including 10-3 in shots on goal.

Seminoles Draw With Wolfpack On Senior Day.
No. 13 Florida State and NC State play to a 1-1 draw on Saturday afternoon.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A late goal by the Wolfpack and a pair of scoreless overtime periods resulted in a 1-1 draw for No. 13 Florida State (10-3-2, 3-3-1 ACC) and NC State (9-4-3, 2-3-2 ACC) on Senior Day for FSU at the Seminole Soccer Complex on Saturday afternoon.

FSU’s Yujie Zhao scored what appeared to be the game-winner in the 69th minute, but the Wolfpack earned a corner with three seconds left and Hannah Keogh’s kick found Taylor Porter on the far post, and her shot went over the line on the final second of regulation to force overtime.

The Seminoles remain unbeaten against the Wolfpack in their last 20 matches of the series, posting a 17-0-3 mark since 1998. The goal by Porter snapped a scoreless streak by NC State of 773:59 against Florida State, dating back to 2010.

Florida State outshot NC State 37-5, including 18-2 in shots on goal and held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.

“One goal today could have been enough to win the game, but we didn’t finish the game strong,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “We were a little bit naïve at the end of the game and probably should have just killed the game off, but so many players want to attack, attack, attack for a second goal, when one goal should be enough. Certainly, our quality around the goal wasn’t good enough, but credit to their goalkeeper for making a few very good saves as well. I thought we had some really good looks at the goal, but we didn’t finish our chances.”

NC State got a strong offensive chance in the opening minute as Kia Rankin worked behind the Seminole defensive line, but her shot from 20 yards was wide of the net.

Kaycie Tillman received a great cross in the box from Kristina Lynch in the eighth minute, and her shot required a diving save by NC State’s Sydney Wootten. Deyna Castellanos took a shot of her own a minute later from the top of the box, but it sailed high.

NC State’s Rankin had the best scoring chance for the Wolfpack prior to the final whistle in the 14th minute as Paige Griffiths sent a pass from midfield up to the NCSU forward in the box and she created space for a shot from 15 yards that FSU GK Brooke Bollinger saved with her left hand and was cleared by the FSU defense.

FSU’s Yujie Zhao was taken down in the penalty box in the 22nd minute, allowing Castellanos to take the PK, but her shot was saved by Wootten.

In the 25th minute, Castellanos slid a pass to Anna Patten on the right and the sophomore’s shot from outside the box went off the crossbar and fell at the feet of Lynch, but her follow-up shot was blocked.

NC State’s Tziarra King managed a pair of shots in the 40th minute, but the match remained scoreless heading into halftime.

The Seminoles had three shots blocked in the 60th and 61st minutes, part of nine FSU shots on the afternoon that were stopped by the NC State defense.

Zhao broke the scoreless tie in the 69th minute, receiving a pass from Tillman 25 yards from the goal and working into the penalty box and going through three NC State defenders before burying a shot from six yards to give the Noles a 1-0 lead. It was the sixth goal of the season for Zhao, which leads the team.

Olivia Bergau had two great chances to make it 2-0 late in the second half as the senior received a pair of crosses from Megan Connolly in the 76th and 79th minutes, but NC State’s Wootten saved both shots, and pushed the ball up into the crossbar on the second shot.

NC State’s Ella Bonner helped earn the late corner for the Wolfpack that turned into the game-tying score as time expired.

The Seminoles were the only team to take a shot in either of the overtime periods, and NC State’s Wootten saved three in the first overtime from Lynch, Castellanos and Patten and another from Patten in the second overtime. NC State had a team save in the 106th minute as Kristen McFarland got Wootten to trip on her own feet and took a shot from 10 yards that was stopped by Porter.

Seminoles Shutout Pitt On The Road.
No. 14 Florida State earns a 4-0 win over the Panthers on Thursday night.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Despite game time temperatures in the 40s, the Seminole offense remained hot as No. 14 Florida State (11-3-2, 4-3-1 ACC) posted a 4-0 shutout over Pitt (4-10-1, 0-8-0 ACC) on Thursday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Deyna Castellanos recorded four points on a goal and two assists, as Kristen McFarland, Anna Patten and Natalia Kuikka also added goals on the night.

“I think overall that it was a good game and a good performance,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “It is always good to put the ball in the back of the net. Coming out in the second half and getting an early one, I think was important for us as well. From beginning to end, it was a good game for us.”

The Seminole offense started strong and earned a corner in the fourth minute and Castellanos’ service went in to Anna Patten, but her header was wide of the net.

A foul to Jaelin Howell in the seventh minute allowed Castellanos to take a free kick from 30 yards that went just over the cross bar. Castellanos started the next FSU scoring chance as she drove into the penalty box on the right and passed back for Kaycie Tillman and her shot at 10:16 was saved by Pitt GK Katherine Robinson.

Florida State opened the scoring in the 16th minute as Gloriana Villalobos dribbled toward the penalty box on the right and drew several Pitt defenders, which allowed Castellanos to be open on the left and Villalobos slid a perfect pass across the top of the box and the junior buried into the net for her sixth goal of the season.

It also marked the 32nd goal of Castellanos’ three-year career, which moved her into a tie for fifth in Florida State history with Mami Yamaguchi (2005-07).

Kristina Lynch nearly made it 2-0 Noles less than two minutes later with a shot from the left that went off the crossbar. It is the eighth time this season that the Seminoles have had a shot go off the crossbar and FSU has had three additional shots off the post in 2018.

Florida State controlled the majority of possession through the middle of the first half and Pitt had their best chance in the first half in the 41st minute as Madeline Gravante took a shot from 40 yards that bending into the upper right corner of the goal, but FSU GK Caroline Jeffers made an outstanding leaping save to punch the ball away for a corner.

The Seminoles pushed the lead out to 2-0 before halftime as Castellanos sent a ball out to the right for Megan Connolly and the senior worked to the endline and passed a low cross through the six-yard box for Kristen McFarland to easily put into the net in the 42nd minute.

FSU quickly made it 3-0 in the second half as a Pitt foul gave the Noles a free kick from 25 yards in the 47th minute. Castellanos took the free kick and it was saved in front of the net by the Pitt goalkeeper, but she couldn’t secure possession and Patten sprinted to the ball and put back the rebound for her second goal of the season.

Castellanos helped start the next scoring chance for Florida State, talking a corner kick from the left in the 63rd minute that couldn’t find a teammate in the six-yard box, but bounced out to Natalia Kuikka. The senior stepped up and blasted a shot from 15 yards for her second goal of the year to extend the lead to 4-0 Florida State.

Pitt’s GK Robinson made a trio of impressive saves in the final minutes as FSU looked to add to its lead. Dallas Dorosy sent a great through ball to Makala Thomas in the 84th minute and the freshman’s shot from 15 yards was punched away for a corner. Connolly’s corner went into the six-yard box, and Dorosy’s header nearly got over the line before it was stopped by Robinson.

In the 89th minute, Olivia Bergau worked to the endline on the left and her pass went through the six-yard box for Dorosy and a diving save by Robinson kept the game at 4-0 FSU.

For the match, FSU outshot the Panthers 22-2, including 11-1 in shots on goal, and had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Florida State Earns First-Ever Road Win At No. 6 Virginia.
The No. 14 Seminoles take down the Cavaliers with a 2-0 victory on Sunday.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – There were a lot of firsts for Florida State soccer on Sunday afternoon in Charlottesville. First goal on the road at Virginia since 2011, first lead at Klöckner Stadium since 2007, and most importantly, the first road win in program history over the Cavaliers as No. 14 Florida State (12-3-2, 5-3-1 ACC) took down No. 6 Virginia (13-3-0, 6-3-0 ACC) by a score of 2-0.

“Overall, I think it was a strong performance,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “You don’t come in here to Virginia and come away with a win unless you have a good, solid game from beginning to end. We scored a couple of opportunistic goals, I thought that our collective defending was quite good and Brooke played well in goal as well. That is a very good Virginia team and that will go down as a good win for us.”

Florida State had the first scoring chance of the match in the fifth minute as Gabby Carle sent a ball down the right to Yujie Zhao and her cross found Kristina Lynch on the far post. The header from the freshman was blocked and cleared away.

Virginia’s first shot came in the 10th minute as Taryn Torres took a shot from the top of the box that was wide of the net.

The Seminoles got on the board in the 18th minute as Virginia was building its offense and played the ball back to goalkeeper Laurel Ivory and one of her controlling touches was too far in front of her. Deyna Castellanos took advantage and easily kicked the ball into the net for a 1-0 FSU lead.

It marked the first goal scored by Florida State at Klöckner Stadium since October 8, 2011 when Tori Huster forced overtime with a goal in the 90th minute.

FSU goalkeeper Brooke Bollinger made three great saves over the final 20 minutes of the first half to keep the Cavaliers off the board.Virginia earned a free kick from 25 yards in the 28th minute and the shot from Ayan Adu needed a leaping punch to keep out of the net. On the ensuing corner kick, Virginia held possession and slid a ball in to Meghan McCool at the six-yard box and Bollinger dove to stop the shot.

UVA’s Adu found space in the 36th minute at the top of the box, but another diving save by Bollinger kept it out of the net.

The Seminoles made it 2-0 before intermission on a goal by Anna Patten in the 44th minute. Senior Megan Connolly slid a ball through the box for Natalia Kuikka, who made a great run up from the back line. Kuikka patiently allowed the UVA goalkeeper to move toward her and passed the ball to Patten to easily tap in the open net for her third goal of the season.

The Florida State defense stood strong throughout the second half to post its 11th shutout of the season. A Seminole foul gave Virginia a free kick from 20 yards on the left in the 51st minute and Malia Berkely blocked the initial service and and cleared the ball, and also blocked a shot by Alexa Spaanstra a minute later.

Virginia managed three corners in the 58th and 59th minutes, but were unable to take a shot on any of the opportunities.

UVA’s Anna Sumpter worked into the box for a shot in the 70th minute, but it was not on goal. The best scoring chance for the Cavaliers down the stretch came in the 79th minute as Rebecca Jarrett got behind the Seminole defense and started a breakaway. Both Berkely and Kuikka caught up to her near the top of the penalty box and disrupted her run enough so that she was not able to take a shot and Bollinger easily collected the ball.

Virginia outshot the Noles, 13-10, and had a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks, while FSU had six shots on goal to UVA’s five.

FSU Falls At Miami In OT; Heads To Duke For ACC Quarterfinals.
The Seminoles lose to the Hurricanes on a golden goal in the 97th minute.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. – In soccer, one shot can often be the difference in winning and losing. Throughout the match, No. 9 Florida State (12-4-2, 5-4-1 ACC) controlled possession, as well as the offensive production, and led Miami (6-9-3, 3-6-1 ACC) in shots (25-0) and shots on goal (7-0), prior to a 97th minute header by Miami’s Mallory Olsson that bounced into the net to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 victory in overtime.

The loss to close out the regular season gave FSU 16 points in the conference standings, good for seventh place. The Seminoles will advance to the ACC quarterfinal round to play No. 2-seed Duke at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 28.

“I thought that Miami played a great game,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “They had a very good game plan, a great effort from their team, committed to their plan and scored the goal at the end to win it. We’ll have to be better and move on.”

It was a tight midfield battle in the first half, but the Seminoles held the majority of the ball and eventually broke down the Miami defense for nine shots in the opening 45 minutes, but could not find the back of the net.

The first quality chance for Florida State came in the 20th minute as Jaelin Howell found Deyna Castellanos at the top of the box and the junior forward dribbled in for a shot from 15 yards. Her shot required an impressive save by Miami’s Phallon Tullis-Joyce to keep the match scoreless.

Castellanos received a pass near the penalty spot in the 33rd minute from Kaycie Tillman, but the shot was blocked by the Miami defense.

A pair of opportunities late in the first half were close for FSU, but not close enough as Gabby Carle passed to Megan Connolly on a run in the box and her redirection shot was blocked and skipped just over the goal for a corner. On the ensuing corner, the ball came out to Olivia Bergau at the top of the box, and her shot from 20 yards went off the crossbar. It marked the ninth time this season that the Seminoles have hit the crossbar with a shot.

Coming out of halftime, the Seminoles earned a shot from Gloriana Villalobos that was wide in the 46th minute and a shot by Castellanos that was blocked away for a corner in the 48th minute.

Dallas Dorosy came off the bench in the 62nd minute and provided a spark to the offense, collecting a pass in the six-yard box from Carle at 69:25, chipping the ball up and then heading it at the goal, but it was saved by Miami’s goalkeeper.

Shortly after, Castellanos took a shot from the top of the box in the 72nd minute that was blocked, but Carle collected the rebound and sent a low shot to the far post that Tullis-Joyce dove to keep out of the net.

Megan Connolly gave the Noles a strong chance in the 81st minute, passing a cross through the penalty box that looked similar to her assist on Sunday at Virginia, but Carle’s shot on the other end was blocked.

Dorosy nearly gave the Noles the victory in the final minute of regulation as Anna Patten sent a long ball from near midfield toward the penalty spot and Dorosy put a great header on it, but a diving save by UM’s Tullis Joyce forced overtime.

Castellanos was able to take a shot in the 91st minute for the Noles and following FSU’s 11th corner of the match, Malia Berkely’s shot at 94:05 was saved.

Miami ended the game with a counterattack down the right side and a cross in from Bayleigh Chaviers found Olsson for the game-winning header.

No. 9 FSU Advances to ACC Semifinals With 1-0 Win Over No. 5 Duke.
The Seminoles are unbeaten (4-0-1) all-time against the Blue Devils in the ACC Tournament.

DURHAM, N.C. – For the second Sunday in a row, the Seminoles have knocked off a Top 10 team on the road as No. 9 Florida State (13-4-2) defeated No. 5 Duke (14-3-2) by a score of 1-0 in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship in front of 730 people at Koskinen Stadium.

The Noles advance to the semifinals and will take on No. 11 Virginia (15-3-0) on November 2 at 8:00 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.

With the win, Florida State remains unbeaten against Duke in the ACC Championship as they improve to 4-0-1 all-time against the Blue Devils in the conference tournament. It is just the second time FSU has won at Koskinen Stadium, joining the 2-1 victory in 2013, as the Noles are now 2-6-6 on the road against the Blue Devils.

“Today was a great road victory for us,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “Duke has had a great season and are going to do very well in the NCAA Tournament. I think we feel very good about coming in here and playing at a very high level and winning the game against another Top 10 team.”

It was hard for either team to create scoring chances in the first half as it was a midfield battle between a pair of Top 10 teams. Duke was able to find numbers in the offensive third in the 16th minute as Delaney Graham sent a cross in from the right, but FSU’s Natalia Kuikka headed it up and Jaelin Howell cleared it away from danger.

A Duke foul to Kristen McFarland in the 23rd minute led to the first goal of the match as the Seminoles were able to take a free kick from 25 yards on the right. The initial cross attempt was blocked, but the ball came back out to Deyna Castellanos, who sent a long ball to Kristina Lynch beyond the far post. The freshman headed it back toward the goal and McFarland headed it home to put FSU up 1-0.

The Blue Devils had a free kick from 25 yards in the 40th minute, but the shot from Karlie Paschall was blocked by the FSU wall as the match went to halftime with the Noles holding a 1-0 lead.

FSU took the first four shots of the second half and limited the Duke offense’s ability to find the equalizer. The Noles didn’t allow a shot from the Blue Devils until the 59th minute as Marykate McGuire’s shot was blocked by Kuikka.

Duke had one final scoring chance in the 85th minute as after a deep throw-in, McCoy took a shot from 30 yards on the left, but FSU’s Brooke Bollinger jumped up to save it to secure the victory.

For the match, the Seminoles outshot Duke 14-5, 5-3 in shots on goal and both teams recorded three corner kicks.

FSU Tops No. 11 Virginia To Reach ACC Championship Game.
The No. 7 Seminoles advance to their 11th ACC title game with a 3-1 win over the Cavaliers.

CARY, N.C. – Posting a come-from-behind win for the first time this season, No. 7 Florida State (14-4-2) defeated No. 11 Virginia (15-4-0) by a score of 3-1 in the semifinals of the 2018 ACC Championship on Friday night at WakeMed Soccer Park. Combined with their 2-0 win over the Cavaliers on October 21, Florida State is the only team this season to score multiple goals in a game against Virginia.

The Seminoles advance to the ACC Championship on Sunday, November 4 and will face No. 3 North Carolina (17-2-1). The Tar Heels topped No. 23 Clemson in their semifinal match, 1-0, earlier on Friday night.

Florida State will play in its 11th ACC Championship Game in school history and are seeking its sixth conference title. FSU now holds a record of 9-3-2 all-time in the semifinal round of the ACC Tournament and will take on UNC in the championship game f “I thought in the first half that we had two or three good looks,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “(Gloriana) Villalobos had a good look at the end of the first half and (Deyna) Castellanos had a great look. We know that we have some pretty good firepower if we get ahold of the ball and start passing it around as we have several kids who can finish. Fortunately, in the second half, that happened for us.

“Coming from behind tonight may come in handy as we go further as our kids have shown on a bigger stage that we can fight our way back while under pressure and find a way to win.”

Florida State nearly opened the scoring in the third minute as a cross from the right by Gabby Carle was redirected by Virginia’s Phoebe McClernon back toward her own goal. UVA goalkeeper Laurel Ivory jumped up and punched the ball into the cross bar and away from danger.

The Noles earned a pair of early corners in the first 10 minutes and Natalia Kuikka took the first shot by FSU at 7:46 that was saved by Ivory.

Virginia created offense in the middle of the first half and had shots from within the box from Montana Sutton in the 14th minute and two shots from Alexa Spaanstra in the 23rd and 24th minutes, but neither of them were on frame.

The Cavaliers scored the first goal of the match in the 43rd minute after its second corner of the match bounced out to Ayan Adu. The midfielder drove a low shot from 35 yards that went through and under several players in the box and was stopped on a diving save by Brooke Bollinger. She was unable to secure the ball and the rebound came out to UVA’s Zoe Morse to put it back from three yards away.

The Seminoles tied the match shortly after halftime as Kristina Lynch found Deyna Castellanos in space at the top of the box in the 50th minute and the Seminole forward buried her shot inside the right post.

Carle helped create FSU’s second goal of the game in the 66th minute driving the ball to the end line on the right and sending a cross through the six-yard box. UVA’s Ivory dove into traffic to punch the ball away and crashed into several players. The ball came to Castellanos near the penalty spot and she scored in the open net as Ivory was unable to get back into position.

The goal was her ninth of the year and 35th of her career, passing Sanna Talonen (2007-08) to move into fourth place in FSU history. It also marked the eighth multi-goal game of her career, which ranks third in school history.

The Seminoles closed out the scoring in the 82nd minute as Castellanos started a counterattack. She passed the ball forward to Kaycie Tillman in the midfield circle and she was flanked in a 3v2 situation by Kristen McFarland on the left and Yujie Zhao on the right. Tillman got the UVA defender to commit to her and slid the ball to McFarland alone in front of the goalkeeper. The redshirt sophomore shot it over her shoulder for her sixth goal of the season.

For the match, FSU outshot Virginia, 11-9, with a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 5-3 in corners.

Seminoles Win Sixth ACC Championship.
Florida State defeats North Carolina, 3-2, to win the 2018 ACC Championship.

CARY, N.C. – For the sixth time in school history and the fifth time in the last six seasons, the Seminoles are champions of the Atlantic Coast Conference as No. 7 Florida State (15-4-2) posted a 3-2 win over No. 3 North Carolina (17-3-1) on Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.

2018 ACC Tournament MVP Dallas Dorosy led the Seminoles with a pair of first-half goals – the first multi-goal game of her career – and added the assist on Kristina Lynch’s game-winning goal in the 84th minute.

It marked the first time that North Carolina had ever lost the ACC Championship Game as the Tar Heels entered the match with a 21-0-3 record in the conference title game, previously falling in penalty kicks to Florida State in 2016 (4-3), Virginia in 2004 (5-4) and NC State in 1988 (4-3).

The victory was FSU’s ninth overall against UNC, which is the most wins versus the Tar Heels of any school in the country. The Seminoles are responsible for over 12% of the losses (9-of-73) in North Carolina women’s soccer history.

“I thought that into the second half we had pretty good control of the game, yet you always have to be concerned about UNC’s firepower,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “At any moment the game can change and they took advantage of it. I thought that our kids showed a lot of composure to be able to come back after giving up two goals to find a way to win it in the end.

“Dallas (Dorosy) has been a four-year player and has worked very hard to help us throughout the years. She embraces her role and enjoys going out there and competing and lifting the team. She is a great teammate and it couldn’t happen for a better kid.”

It was a tight midfield battle in the opening minutes of the game as the two Top 10 teams competed for possession and position. North Carolina took the first shot of the match in the sixth minute on a header by Morgan Goff, following a corner kick, but Brooke Bollinger was there for the save.

FSU’s Yujie Zhao recorded the first shot for Florida State in the 16th minute, but her attempt from the top of the box was saved by UNC’s Samantha Leshnak. Deyna Castellanos had a trio of dangerous chances in the middle of the first half, but all three were blocked away by the UNC defense.

North Carolina nearly scored in the 32nd minute as Ru Mucherera sent a cross into the box for Rachael Dorwart, but the shot from the UNC forward was wide of the net.

Jaelin Howell set up the first FSU goal of the day with an outstanding through ball on the right side in the 36th minute for Dorosy. The senior drove toward the net and scored her third goal of the season to put the Seminoles up 1-0.

It marked the first goal allowed by UNC’s Leshnak since August 22, 2018 against Texas, a scoreless streak that spanned a school-record of over 1,119 minutes.

Dorosy struck again in the 41st minute as Megan Connolly’s low cross from the right bounced around the six-yard box and eventually found the foot of Dorosy to make it 2-0 Seminoles heading into halftime.

The 2-0 FSU lead on North Carolina marked just the 25th time in the 955 games of program history that UNC had ever trailed by more than one goal.

The Seminoles came out in the second half strong and Bollinger made a great leaping catch on a cross in the 62nd minute, but came down awkwardly on the ball. Caroline Jeffers entered to play the rest of the match in goal for the Noles.

A clearance attempt by Jeffers led to UNC’s first goal as Alex Kimball blocked the ball out of the air and it rolled into the goal at 62:34 to cut the FSU lead to 2-1.

North Carolina’s second goal came in the 72nd minute after a long free kick bounced out to Rachel Jones on the left. Jones worked to the endline and sent a cross for Mucherera to head inside the far post to equalize the match at 2-2.

Dorosy’s cross from the right side near the endline bounced into the six-yard box for Lynch to slot into the net for her fourth goal of the season.

The last chance for the Tar Heels came in the 87th minute as a corner kick found Julia Ashley, but her header went directly to Jeffers for the save.

Shots for the game were tied at 10, while FSU had five shots on goal to UNC’s two. North Carolina held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Florida State Shuts Out Loyola Chicago.
The Seminoles top the Ramblers, 1-0, on Friday night.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Recording a shutout for the 13th consecutive time at home in the NCAA postseason, No. 5 ranked Florida State (16-4-2) advances to the second round of the 2018 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship after a 1-0 victory over Loyola Chicago (11-7-1) on Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

Anna Patten’s goal in the 52nd minute proved to be the difference as the Seminoles improved their home record to 42-1-0 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, and have not allowed a postseason goal at home since 2013 – a span covering over 1,190 minutes.

“We feel great that we were able to score the goal and will continue on in the NCAA Tournament,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “A great deal of credit goes to Loyola Chicago. Absolutely fantastic performance by that group. Great game plan by their coaches and great execution by their players. They certainly gave us all that we could handle and we are fortunate to move on.”

The Seminoles controlled possession throughout the first half and outshot the Ramblers 19-0 in the opening 45 minutes and put seven shots on goal, but FSU couldn’t find the back of the net.

Deyna Castellanos had a strong shot in the 15th minute from 25 yards out that was saved in front of the goal. Kristen McFarland raced toward the rebound, but couldn’t get a clean touch on it as it was cleared by the Loyola defense.

Kaycie Tillman made several quality passes to set up scoring chances, but Castellanos’ shot in the 22nd minute was blocked and a shot by Gloriana Villalobos at 26:03 was wide of the net.

One of the best scoring chances for the Noles in the first half came in the 36th minute as a corner kick from Malia Berkely found Natalia Kuikka near the penalty spot and the senior’s header was directed inside the right post. The ball went past the goalkeeper, but the Loyola defender on the post, Taylor Lambouris, jumped up to head the ball off the line.

Villalobos slid a near-perfect pass to Castellanos in the 44th minute, but the Rambler goalkeeper, Kate Moran, closed out to save the shot from 15 yards just after it left her foot.

The Seminoles got on the board at 51:56 as Castellanos sent a pass to Villalobos in open space on the right. The Costa Rica native drew defenders to her and made a drop pass to Anna Patten near the corner of the penalty box and the sophomore stepped up and shot the ball on her first touch, burying it into the net for her fourth goal of the season.

Loyola created a dangerous situation in the 59th minute as a long ball was flicked forward on a header by Sienna Cruz and LUC’s Jenna Szczesny and Madison Kimball, along with FSU goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers all met at the ball at the same time and all three fell to the pitch after a collision as the ball rolled loose. FSU defender Natalia Kuikka came through to take possession and clear the ball.

The Ramblers took their first shot of the match in the 84th minute as a free kick from near midfield was headed by Szczesny from 15 yards, but Jeffers made the save.

Loyola had another scoring chance at 84:43 as Lambouris found space on the left, but her shot from 25 yards went over the cross bar.

The Noles maintained possession the rest of regulation, earning two more of their 12 total corner kicks in the final two minutes to secure the win. For the match, FSU outshot Loyola, 26-2, including 10-1 in shots in goal.

The Seminoles will host the second and third rounds on November 16 and 18 and the teams and match times will be announced after all NCAA first round games are completed.

Seminoles Advance To NCAA Third Round With 3-1 Win Over USF.
The victory sets up a Top 10 matchup between No. 5 FSU and No. 6 USC on Sunday.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A pair of second-half goals carried the Seminoles to the third round of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship as No. 5 Florida State (17-4-2) defeated No. 20 USF (15-4-0) by a score of 3-1 on Friday afternoon in front of a crowd of 1,368 at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

The victory sets up a Top 10 matchup on Sunday for a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals between the No. 5 Noles and No. 6 USC (17-2-2), which shutout LSU, 2-0, earlier in the day. The match on November 18 will begin at 1:00 p.m.

“I thought overall it was a high-level game,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “Two very intense, hardworking teams and we feel very fortunate that we are able to continue and advance in the tournament after playing a very good opponent. They brought everything that we could handle, and at the end of the day I thought our kids competed very favorably.”

It was a quiet start to the match in regards to shots and offensive chances, but it was a physical battle with 11 combined fouls, as well as a yellow card issued to USF’s Evelyne Viens, along with numerous tackles and collisions throughout the first 35 minutes.

USF opened the scoring with a goal at 34:14 by Aubrey Megrath. Sabrina Wagner and Katie Kitching worked the ball from the right along the top of the box out to Megrath on the left and the junior took a shot that began toward the right post, but was deflected by an FSU defender and headed inside the left post. FSU goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers was unable to change direction in time as the ball rolled into the net for a 1-0 USF lead.

It marked the first time in the last 14 NCAA Tournament matches at home that the Seminoles had allowed a goal, a span of 1,224:16 of game time, dating back to a match against Ole Miss in 2013. Overall, Florida State improves to 43-1-0 all-time at home in the NCAA Tournament.

Florida State competed hard after allowing the goal and nearly tied the match in the 39th minute as a low shot from Malia Berkely was blocked up into the air by the USF defense and Anna Patten rushed in and placed a good header on the ball, but it was saved by USF GK Sydney Martinez.

The Noles did find the equalizer before halftime as Dallas Dorosy tallied her fifth goal of the year in the 41st minute. Gabby Carle made a run down the right side and worked to the endline before sending a pass to Dorosy as she made a run to the first post. The ball was a little bit behind her, but she cleverly used the inside of her foot to redirect the ball around behind her, between two USF defenders and into the goal to tie the match at 1-1.

Out of intermission, the Seminoles continued to put pressure on as Deyna Castellanos took a pair of shots in the 46th and 47th minutes that were blocked and saved.

USF had a quality chance in the 60th minute as Megrath sent a long ball through the midfield to Viens, but her second touch near the top of the box was too strong and Jeffers was able to easily secure the ball to end the threat. Viens entered the match with an NCAA-leading 20 goals, 91 shots and 51 shots on goal for the season, but the Seminole defense held her without a shot for the entire 90 minutes.

Florida State went in front in the 63rd minute as Kaycie Tillman found Castellanos near the top of the box and the junior slipped the ball through to Yujie Zhao near the penalty spot. The freshman took a quick shot that was saved on a dive by USF’s Martinez, but the rebound bounced up and Zhao chested it across the line to make it 2-1 Seminoles.

Zhao was key to FSU’s final goal of the match in the 87th minute as she collected a throw-in from Kirsten Pavlisko on the left, worked to the endline and brought a perfect centering pass back to Gloriana Villalobos to easily score her first goal of the season for the 3-1 final score.

The goal by Villalobos marks the 14th different Seminole to score a goal this season, which is tied for the second-most individual goal-scorers in program history, trailing only the 16 scorers from the 2012 squad.

Overall, FSU outshot the Bulls 17-4, with 8-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 7-2 lead in corner kicks, while USF recorded 19 fouls on the night to FSU’s 6.

“I think it’s going to be a great matchup,” said Krikorian about Sunday’s match against USC. “I don’t think anybody in the soccer community is not a little bit surprised that Southern California was not a higher seed than a four. I think they’re a really good team, they have a lot of good players and their coaching is outstanding. Anybody coming here as a fan is going to be treated to a very high level, good game of soccer that could have easily been a Final Four game. My perspective is that I have a great deal of respect for what that program is doing and for the way they play and the quality that they bring.”

Noles Triumph Over USC In Penalties And Advance To NCAA Quarterfinals.
No. 5 Florida State topped No. 6 USC 5-4 in penalty kicks after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – A save by Caroline Jeffers, followed by a penalty kick from Yujie Zhao, propelled No. 5 Florida State (17-4-3) into the quarterfinals of the 2018 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship after the Seminoles and No. 6 USC (17-2-3) played to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes, with FSU triumphing 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout.

It was the second time the Noles and Trojans had played this season as Top-10 opponents and both matches ended in a draw in Tallahassee.

Sunday’s PK shootout win is the second time the Noles have advanced in the NCAA Tournament on penalties, joining the 5-4 victory over UNC on the road in Chapel Hill in the 2005 quarterfinals.

Overall, Florida State has won each of its last four penalty kick shootouts, and are a combined 9-3 in a shootout across the NCAA and ACC Tournaments all-time.

“I would say that the game played out as we kind of thought it would as I expressed before the game,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “I have nothing but great respect for the group from the Southern California. Their coaches are exceptional, the players are very good and they play very hard and attacking style of soccer. But at the end of the day, we found a way to continue this journey.

“So, I think that we are very fortunate. We were very good but a little unlucky to be down a goal. The credit goes to them for scoring the goal. We fought back and Miss November (Dallas Dorosy) scored a goal. Caroline (Jeffers) also stood strong through the course of the game. It was a great shot that their player (Leah Pruitt) took. She is an absolutely incredible player and I feel for her especially because she is a senior. She is going to have a long career after her days in the college. I think that she is an exceptional player and an exceptional talent.”

Florida State started strong and nearly scored in the fourth minute as Kaycie Tillman worked the ball into Zhao and the freshman made a great pass to Deyna Castellanos near the penalty spot. The junior’s shot was saved on a dive by USC goalkeeper Kaylie Collins and FSU’s Kristen McFarland ran up for the rebound, but her shot was blocked.

USC’s Tara McKeown made a run up the left side in the 15th minute and nearly got behind the FSU defense, but Gabby Carle gained inside position to keep her off the long ball and allow Jeffers to secure the ball.

Zhao and McFarland combined for a quality scoring chance for the Noles in the 21st minute as Zhao passed to McFarland at the top of the box. The forward dropped a pass to the right for Zhao to line a low shot that was saved by Collins and hit the outside of the left post for an FSU corner.

A Seminole corner kick in the 24th minute set up another chance for Castellanos and McFarland, but the result was the same as Castellanos’ shot was saved and the USC defense got in position to block McFarland’s follow up from 10 yards out.

USC opened the scoring in the 37th minute as Penelope Hocking made a run down the left side and tried to cross the ball into the box, but it was blocked by the FSU defense. The ball came back to her feet and she moved into the box and slotted a shot into the upper left corner for her 14th goal of the year, putting USC up 1-0.

The Noles had a chance to tie it up before halftime as a foul to Jaelin Howell allowed for a free kick from 30 yards, but the service couldn’t find a teammate in the box.

USC had a pair of shots in the 50th minute as Alea Hyatt’s attempt was blocked, but it rolled right Leah Pruitt, but her shot was wide of the net.

Zhao helped start the game-tying scoring chance in the 65th minute as she chipped a pass into the box for Castellanos, and her shot was saved away for a corner. On the corner, Malia Berkely’s service came into Howell at the top of the box and she headed into Dallas Dorosy and the senior finished it into the net to equalize the game at 1-1.

Dorosy nearly put the Noles in front in the 83rd minute as one of FSU’s 10 corner kicks was not cleanly cleared by USC and the ball came in to Dorosy and her shot from 10 yards was blocked by the USC defense.

USC’s Hocking hit a long-range shot that went off the crossbar in the 86th minute, and the follow-up shot by Natalie Jacobs was high as the match headed to overtime.

In the first overtime, Gloriana Villalobos made a run on the left and Castellanos sent a nice pass for her, but the shot in the 92nd minute was blocked.

USC hit the crossbar for the second time in the match as Alea Hyatt’s shot in the 93rd minute nearly ended the game.

Florida State created some quality chances in the second overtime as Berkely and Zhao sent low crosses in the box in the 101st and 102nd minutes, but they both rolled through the box untouched.

Villalobos took another shot from the left in the 108th minute that was saved by USC’s Collins and the ball bounced out to Howell at the top of the box, but her shot was blocked.

For the first time in Tallahassee, a match went to penalty kicks and USC went first. All four players from each team converted their kicks as USC’s Jacobs, Ally Prisock, Arlie Jones and Daria Petredes scored, and FSU’s Anna Patten, Natalia Kuikka, Carle and Howell all made theirs.

In the fifth round, USC’s Pruitt attempted to shoot it low inside the left post, but a diving touch by Jeffers pushed it wide of the net. Zhao stepped to the penalty spot and converted her kick to send the Noles into the NCAA quarterfinals.

Overall, FSU outshot USC 17-11, and 9-4 in shots on goal, while having a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.

FSU Heads Back To College Cup With 1-0 Win Over Penn State.
The No. 5 Seminoles advance to the NCAA semifinals for the 10th time in program history.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – For the 10th time in school history, and the first time since 2015, the Seminoles are heading to the 2018 NCAA Women’s College Cup as No. 5 Florida State (18-4-3) posted a 1-0 shutout against No. 14 Penn State (18-6-1) in front of 2,209 fans on Friday afternoon at the Seminole Soccer Complex.

It was a tale of two halves in Tallahassee, but Deyna Castellanos’ goal in the 53rd minute was the difference after the Seminoles fought back into the game after Penn State outshot the Noles 6-2 in the opening 45 minutes and held significant possession.

“Today, in the first half, Penn State was the better team,” said FSU head coach Mark Krikorian. “They came out and took it to us probably better than anyone has all season long. So credit to them. The good news is that our group fought, competed and hung in there until the second half.

“The second half was much better with the goal from Deyna (Castellanos). Caroline (Jeffers) was strong and solid in the goal. Overall, it is about finding a way to win the game, score the goal and advance. We are proud to move on to Cary and have an opportunity to play there.”

Penn State put the pressure on early with three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes, but were unable to create a shot in any of those set piece opportunities.

The Nittany Lions were playing with a high defensive line and FSU’s Malia Berkely sent a long ball over the top for Yujie Zhao in the 14th minute, but the PSU goalkeeper, Amanda Dennis, got to the ball a step before Zhao to end the threat.

A Seminole foul allowed Penn State to take a free kick from 25 yards in the 22nd minute, but the FSU wall blocked the initial pass attempt and the ball bounced out to Emily Ogle on the left. The midfielder’s shot went over the crossbar.

Penn State’s Kerry Abello cut off an FSU pass in the midfield in the 25th minute and looked to be all alone on a counterattack before Natalia Kuikka sprinted back into position to take the ball off her without allowing a shot.

Anna Patten played a ball out to the right for Gabby Carle in the 36th minute, but her cross was secured by Dennis before it could get to Dallas Dorosy on the far post.

The best scoring chance for either team came in the 41st minute as Penn State’s Maddie Nolf crossed a long ball from the right into the corner of the six-yard box for Kim Dubs. The forward’s header was on frame, but FSU GK Caroline Jeffers made a diving save to keep the match squared at 0-0 heading into intermission.

Coming out for the second half, the Seminoles took control offensively and earned three corner kicks of their own in the opening five minutes of play. Senior Natalia Kuikka made a run up from the backline in the 49th minute and drove a shot from 30 yards on the left that knuckled toward the goal and PSU’s Dennis was able to get a palm on it and save it away for a corner.

The Noles scored the only goal of the match in the 53rd minute as Kaycie Tillman passed a ball from the right into Zhao near the penalty spot. The freshman dropped the ball back out Castellanos at the top of the box and the Venezuelan native lined it into the back of the net for her 10th goal of the season.

It marked the 15th game-winning goal of Castellanos’ career, which is second in FSU history, trailing only Dagny Brynjarsdottir who tallied 19 game-winners from 2011-14.

The Seminole defense stepped up its intensity and limited the Nittany Lions to just one shot over the first 37 minutes of the second half, as Florida State was more aggressive in the midfield and won many 50-50 balls.

Penn State’s best chance at an equalizer came in the 83rd minute as an FSU foul gave the Nittany Lions a free kick from 25 yards on the left. The free kick from Alina Ortega-Jurado bent over the FSU wall and nearly inside the right post, but sailed wide of the net.

It was the last chance as the Seminoles controlled possession for the final seven minutes to secure the victory. FSU and PSU tied with eight shots each and five corners apiece, but the Noles had five shots on goal to the two for the Nittany Lions.

Florida State One Win From Second National Championship.
The No. 5 Seminoles shutout No. 1 Stanford on Friday night, 2-0.

CARY, N.C. – Two unlikely goals from two unlikely sources led Florida State to what most in the college soccer community might have called an unlikely victory.

And, to be sure, when top-ranked Stanford put together its scouting report for No. 5 Florida State, defenders Gabby Carle and Malia Berkely probably weren’t tops on their list of potential scoring threats.

But it was Carle’s left-footed strike – her first goal of the season – that staked the Seminoles to an early lead over the Cardinal.

And it was Berkely who provided the exclamation point with a deep shot that deflected off Stanford keeper Alison Jahansouz’s hands and into the net for the goal that clinched FSU’s stunning 2-0 win.

It was Berkely’s first goal of the season, too.

The Seminoles are off to their fourth national championship game in school history, and can claim their second title on Sunday afternoon against North Carolina.

Stanford, the defending national champion, owner of a 45-match unbeaten streak and the nation’s wire-to-wire No. 1 team, heads home a loser for the first time since Aug. 25, 2017.

“We’re thrilled,” FSU coach Mark Krikorian said, “that we were able to find a way to score a couple goals and be able to advance and have a chance to play on this beautiful field in this beautiful stadium again.”

Both Florida State goals were beautiful in their own right, although Carle’s was more so in the traditional sense.

In the 29th minute, Carle, a fullback from Levis, Quebec, got the ball near the right touchline, started dribbling across the top of the penalty area in search of an attacking teammate.

By the time she got to the top of the penalty area, Carle realized she could just do it herself. She ripped a low, left-footed shot that went against her body’s momentum and seemed to surprise Stanford’s Jahansouz as it made its way to the bottom-right corner of the net.

“I started going inside and kept going until I realized I could score,” Carle said. “I just thought that would be the hardest shot for the keeper, and I swung my leg and it happened.”

If Carle’s goal planted the seeds for an FSU upset, Berkely’s strike 13 minutes later brought the idea into full bloom.

Both because of the two-gal advantage it brought, and because of the way it happened.

Bringing the ball down the center of the field from her position in the middle of the back line, Berkely found herself unmarked from about 25 yards away from the goal.

It wasn’t the first time that Berkely had taken a shot from so far away. But every previous seemed to either go off the crossbar or sail clear over.

This one, however, was on target – maybe even a little too on target. Because after leaving Berkely’s foot, the ball curled right down into Jahansouz’s waiting arms for what should have been an easy change of possession.

Instead, Jahansouz, a fifth-year senior and a second-team All-Pac-12 selection, misjudged the ball and popped it straight up over her left should.

Jahansouz put her face in her hands as most of the 10,811 fans in attendance erupted in a stunned applause.

“I saw the keeper off her line and thought if I hit it just right, it could go in,” Berkley said. “And it did.”

Added Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe: “The second goal was the one that really deflated us.”

Indeed, for all of Stanford’s dominance both this season and beyond, it might have entered the College Cup with at least one small blind spot: It’s rarely had to play through adversity.

The Cardinal came into against its game against FSU having trailed for a total of just 7 minutes, 29 seconds, and it hadn’t been looking up at a two-goal deficit in more than two years.

The Seminoles, meanwhile, had earned three come-from-behind victories in the postseason alone.

Not they needed anything of the sort on Friday.

“I think that our kids have brought a very good winning mentality,” Krikorian said. “And competing from start to finish.”

For much of the second half, Stanford had the look of a team short on ideas.

Aside from a few brief flurries, the Cardinal never put FSU under much pressure, rarely tested goalkeeper Caroline Jeffers and could never seem to maintain any possession in the Seminoles’ defensive zone.

The Cardinal had four corner kicks, but were caught offside four times and didn’t have a single shot on goal for the final 56:22 of the game.

“Usually that’s something we do to teams,” Ratcliffe said. “They closed down spaces quickly and didn’t give us much time to get good shots off.”

Stanford’s one quality shot, early in the first half, ended in one of Jeffers’ finest saves – a leaping deflection off her fingertips that led to a fruitless corner kick for the Cardinal.

After the game, Stanford’s Alana Cook said that, had Stanford converted that shot, or one of its other opportunities, the game might have played out in a different fashion.

Instead, the Seminoles got two unlikely goals from two unlikely sources and, as a result, are only one win away from the national championship.

Sunday will mark the third meeting this season between FSU and North Carolina. The Tar Heels won 1-0 in Tallahassee in September, while the Seminoles claimed a 3-2 victory here in Cary in the ACC championship game on Nov. 4.

Said Berkely: “If we go out and play our game, follow the game plan and play like we have been playing – which has been very good – I think we’ll get the result we want.”

Florida State Wins Second National Championship.
The Seminoles top UNC, 1-0, to win the 2018 NCAA National Championship.

CARY, N.C. – Deyna Castellanos delivered the pass that put the national championship within reach.

Dallas Dorosy calmly put it into the back of the net.

Castellanos’ low, early cross and Dorosy’s sliding finish in the 60th minute lifted Florida State to a 1-0 victory over North Carolina in Sunday’s NCAA College Cup Final, clinching FSU soccer’s second national title in front of 12,512 fans – most of them wearing Carolina blue – here at WakeMed Soccer Park.

“Me and Deyna, we made eye-contact,” Dorosy said. “And just, with everything I had, I threw my body in there. I didn’t even know it went in until I looked up.”

Consider it the latest heroics for Dorosy, recently nicknamed “Miss November” after scoring four goals in last month’s postseason run.

Dorosy’s title-winner was the senior’s seventh of the season and third against North Carolina. And it would be hard to find another more beautiful.

With the game tied 0-0 midway through the second half, Castellanos carried the ball down the right wing and backed off her defender as Dorosy made a break for the near post – the type of play the two had made hundreds of times on the practice fields.

Castellanos sent a low, curling ball around one defender and in front of another, and Dorosy’s foot found it for the finish.

“That’s something we always work on,” Castellanos said. “She was there how I expected. It was a great finish.”

Added Dorosy: “I couldn’t ask for a better ball. There was a player on her, a player on me, and the ball was in a perfect spot.”

After the game, coach Mark Krikorian joked that, since the calendar recently changed to December, perhaps Dorosy’s nickname should, too:

“I did rename her Miss December now,” he said with a laugh. “I asked her, and she’s good with it.”

Dorosy’s winner gave FSU the edge on what was a tense, physical and sometimes frantic afternoon.

The Seminoles and Tar Heels finished with an equal number of shots (eight), saves (two) and fouls (12), and although UNC had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, it also got caught offside five times.

The intensity reached its peak in the game’s waning moments, as UNC desperately pushed forward in search of the tying goal.

The Tar Heels attempted four shots over the final 25 minutes, but put only one on target.

“My heart was pounding,” senior midfielder Kaycie Tillman said. “We were just trying to keep the lead, play as safe as possible and make sure we secure the win.”

UNC’s best opportunity might have come in the 88th minute, after a shot deflected behind the goal line for a corner kick.

But with a heavily-partisan Carolina crowd on its feet – including UNC hoops coach Roy Williams – FSU’s Olivia Bergau headed the ball out of the penalty area, then Dorosy cleared it downfield and the threat was over.

A little more than two minutes later, the official’s whistle blew, and the Seminoles had done it.

“I got so worked up,” senior midfielder Megan Connolly said with a smile. “I couldn’t cope. Five minutes left and they were in our box? I couldn’t cope. But the team just fought through.”

The Seminoles have done a lot of fighting over the last month.

On Oct. 28, FSU entered the ACC tournament on an uneven run of form, having just lost at Miami and getting set to visit No. 9 Duke in a quarterfinal match that would set the tone for the postseason.

But Florida State topped the Blue Devils, 1-0, in Durham and never lost again.

The Seminoles went on to beat No. 12 Virginia and No. 3 North Carolina on the way to an ACC tournament title, and then No. 20 South Florida, No. 6 Southern California and No. 14 Penn State to earn a spot in their 10th College Cup.

They then beat No. 1 and defending national champion Stanford on Friday to set up their title-game clash with UNC, a program that has won 21 of a possible 37 NCAA women’s soccer titles.

No wonder coach Mark Krikorian called it a “murderers’ row.”

“We worked so hard for this,” Dorosy said. “To go through adversity – we had some lows in the season and we worked through it – I think it makes it that much more valuable.

“We worked for it, and I think we deserved it, for sure.”

With their second title in hand, FSU’s place among the nation’s elite is both deserved and undisputed.

In the span of the last few weeks, the Seminoles have:

Following its first title in 2014, the Seminoles adorned their uniform with a star emblem atop the “FSU” badge, a tradition in international soccer that symbolizes previous championships. (The Brazilian national team, for example, has five stars to represent its five World Cup titles.)

Come August, when the defending champion Seminoles begin their title defense, their jerseys will have two stars.

Several key members of this year’s team, including Castellanos, ACC newcomer of the year Yujie Zhao and freshman Jaelin Howell, the College Cup’s most outstanding defensive player, will be there for it.

For those who won’t, a senior class that includes Dorosy, Tillman and Connolly, as well as co-captains Natalia Kuikka and Olivia Bergau, there’s no better way to finish their careers than what happened here on Sunday afternoon.

“I kind of have no words,” said Kuikka, a Finland native who held back tears as she watched the post-match celebration.

“I’ve practiced for this for four years. This was the only goal. The only reason I came to play college soccer. It’s been ups and downs and hard work, tears. But it feels amazing when you get here.”

Editor's note: Malia Berkely wore the No. 18 jersey for the national championship match, senior Macayla Edwards' jersey. Edwards tore her ACL and Berkely told her before the Final Four if they get to the finals she's wearing the jersey to honor her fallen teammate.
