Arnold ignites FSU win.

BOWLING GREEN, KY – In one night, Rodney Arnold extinguished all the frustrations of a distressing basketball season.
Starting for just the second time this season, Arnold helter-skeltered all over the court Friday night at Diddle Arena, scoring 29 points and leading Florida State to a 94-91 victory over Toledo in the opening round of the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
The Seminoles now move to the second round and an appointment with third-ranked Kentucky on Sunday afternoon.
At press time, Virginia Tech and Western Kentucky were in overtime, after Tech came back from a 48-30 halftime deficit to tie the game at 75-75 at the end of regulation. The winner of that game plays Sunday against Indiana.
The winners of Sunday’s games advance to Lexington, Ky., and the Mideast finals. NBC will televise the Florida State-Kentucky game.
Arnold, a 6-foot-4 sophomore who transferred from Furman shortly after Joe Williams became the head coach at FSU in 1978, played his best game as a Seminole.
The word being bantered about was confidence. Until the Metro Conference finals last week, Arnold had been coming off the bench. His play was erratic at best. Though he developed as a defensive player, Arnold’s difficulties were as a scorer. His scoring average before Friday night was 7.6 points per game.
“I’ve got a lot more confidence now,” Arnold said, while scanning a statistics sheet that said he shot 10-for-17 from the field and nine-for-10 from the foul line, with four assists and five rebounds.
“Not starting, I definitely felt they didn’t have confidence in me.”
Assistant coach Bobby Dotson said that wasn’t the way it was. The Seminoles had a winning combination with 5-10 Bobby Parks starting at a wing position.
“Bobby had been playing well, we just needed more muscle against Louisville,” Dotson said, explaining the move to start Arnold for the first time. “Rodney has been a starter all his life, and not starting made him lose his confidence. Now he’s ready to give a more consistent effort.”
The Seminoles, 22-8, were in danger of making an early retreat to Tallahassee until Arnold and Mickey Dillard turned the game around.
With Toledo leading 84-80, Arnold stole the ball from Harvey Knuckles at midcourt, drove to the basket and laid the ball in. On top of that, the frustrated Knuckles fouled Arnold. The free throw was good, and Arnold’s three-point play cut the Rockets’ lead to 84-83 with 2:47 left.
“I was trying to make him (Knuckles) go to the right,” Arnold said. “So I went to my left, he spun back around. I stuck my hand out and I got it.”
Almost immediately after that, it was Dillard’s turn. The quickest player on the court, Dillard stripped the ball from Rockets’ guard Jay Lehman and drove in for the lay-up. That put the Seminoles up by one, 86-85, with 2:39 remaining.
Tim Selgo, who scored 18 points from long range for Toledo, popped in a 17-footer as the Rockets took the lead for the final time.
Arnold spotted an open Murray Brown and the Mule turned and hit from eight feet away for an 87-86 Seminole lead with 1:48 left to play.
After Lehman missed, Dillard drove the baseline for a three-point FSU advantage. Brown, who scored 26 points on 12-for-16 shooting, then clicked on a three-point play with 47 seconds left, and the Seminoles started thinking about Kyle Macy & Co.
For most of the game, the Rockets, 23-6, had been entertaining such thoughts. The Mid-American Conference champions took a 48-43 lead at halftime behind 14 points from Dick Miller and 12 from Knuckles, and still led by six, 67-61, with 12:12 to play.
“Toledo is an excellent shooting team,” Williams said. “We tried to push them out of their control game, but the key was when we began to make a couple of little flurries on offense.
“I thought we played well on offense all night,” said Williams, who notched his 275th career victory. “We just couldn’t stop them.”
The Rockets shot 56.2 percent for the game and made just 10 turnovers to the Seminoles’ 16. But Miller, Toledo’s second-leading scorer and top rebounder, fouled out with 8:48 to go and Swaney, the top point-maker, was beset by foul trouble and missed considerable time.
The Seminoles, on the other hand, got the balanced effort from their big men they have been searching for most of the season.
In addition to Brown’s 26, Elvis Rolle scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds, despite being saddled with four fouls much of the second half.
Sophomore Pernell Tookes, though he shot 0-for-5, pulled down six rebounds in 15 minutes.
Point guard Tony Jackson passed for eight assists as the Seminoles shot .549 from the floor. They weren’t as efficient in the second half as they were in the first, when they shot 57 percent, but neither did FSU suffer the same defensive lapse.
“They got about four baskets on us off their break and two off the press in the first half,” Williams said. “That’s six easy baskets. Then they got five on offensive tips. That’s 11 field goals in the first half that they didn’t have to fight to get. We felt we had to cut that off.”
The Seminoles sis, forcing the Rockets to resort to firing rockets from the outside. When the missles started to miss, FSU took command.

Seminoles demolished by Wildcats.

BOWLING GREEN, KY – Dreams die hard and any that Florida State might have nurtured were ripped to pieces by the Kentucky Wildcats at Diddle Arena Sunday.
Blowing the game apart in the final six minutes of the first half, the third-ranked Wildcats savagely thrashed the Seminoles 97-78 in the NCAA Mideast Regionals.
Kentucky, 29-5, advances to the comforts of its own Rupp Arena for the next round of the Mideast and a date with Duke Thursday in Lexington, Ky.
Before Sunday’s slaughter, Indiana also earned a trip to Lexington by getting past Virginia Tech 68-59. The Hoosiers play Big Ten rival Purdue Thursday.
The Seminoles finished at 22-9 with their worst defeat of the season. They trailed by as much as 25 points with 3:16 to play before the substitutes took over for both teams.
He clock let all 40 minutes expire, but this game was over after 20. The tall, talented and often-terrific Wildcats had settled matters with a 49-27 halftime lead that delighted the 12,100 noisy Kentucky partisans.
Missing 12 of their first 19 free throws, the Seminoles somehow were able to remain within shouting distance of the Wildcats, trailing 31-23 with six minutes to go in the half.
But Kentucky, taking complete advantage of nine Seminole turnovers (1.5 per minute), outscored FSU 18-4 the rest of the half and left the Seminoles for dead.
“For some reason, we kind od quit,” Florida State Coach Joe Wiliams said. “We stopped doing anything at all. We got into such a big hole that we couldn’t dig out of it.”
The Seminoles missed out on 16 potential first half points by shooting 9-for-21 from the foul line, including four misses on the front ends of one-on-ones.
They finished a little better, shooting 20-for-38 for the game.
Williams was asked if any of his previous seven tournament teams had ever shot so poorly from the line. “I don’t think any team I had ever did,” he said.
Both teams were hurt by fouls – a total of 56 were called, eight fewer than the record for an NCAA tournament game. That may have hurt the Seminoles most when playmaker Tony Jackson drew his third fould with 9:06 to play in the first half.
Still, Florida State managed to keep pace with the Wildcats for the next three minutes before the bottom fell out. Jackson eventually returned with 3:13 remaining in the half, but seconds later picked up his fourth foul and had to return to the bench.
“When Tony got his third foul, we still weren’t in such bad shape,” Williams said. “Then he came back and picked up his fourth foul and we just quit.”
“We lost our composure,” FSU assistant Coach John Jones said. “We started to go one-on-one too much. Both teams were running, but they were more organized. We were taking wild shots, crazy shots.”
The Seminoles had hoped to use the supposedly superior quickness to run on Kentucky, but the Wildcats seemingly grabbed every rebound, wiping out the starting point of the fast break. The Wildcats outrebounded the Seminoles 34-13 in the first half and grabbed 54 rebounds for the game, a season best.
Sam Bowie, the 7-foot-1 freshman man-child of the Wildcats, thought he was a guard, shooting 2-for-9 in the half, mostly from further than anyone his size need shoot. But he pulled down nine off the boards, two more than the combined total of Florida State’s big men, Elvis Rolle and Murray Brown.
The rebounding edge was so severe that the Wildcats took 19 more shots than the Seminoles, and were able to absorb a 42.5 percent shooting performance from the floor.
“They’re a pretty physical team,” said Rolle, who finished the game with 15 points. “We weren’t blocking out and their line-up was much bigger.”
LaVon Williams, the 6-7, 220-pound senior forward, was in constant foul difficulties and played just 18 minutes. Still, he scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds (more than any Seminole), which probably explained his kindness afterwards.
“I didn’t know we were getting so many rebounds,” he said. “Some balls were bouncing off kind of long. And sometimes we were getting good inside position.”
UK’s Williams said the key to stopping the FSU running game was holding up Dillard, who scored seven points in the first half and finished with 19.
“We kind of cut off Dillard from that long pass he receives,” the Wildcat player said. “And we helped each other on Brown quite a bit.”
Brown, who fouled out along with Jackson in the final collegiate game for each, led the game with 22 points and shot 9-for-12 from the field to set a new NCAA record for career field-goal percentage. His mark of .680 wipes out the old record set last year by Joe Senser of West Chester State.
The Wildcats were in such complete command that they hardly needed the considerable talents of senior guard Kyle Macy in the second half. He scored just two points. Of course, his 14 points in the first half helped create that comfortable situation.
Macy shot 6-for-8 despite the close guarding of Jackson, a 6-footer compared to Macy’s 6-3. A No. 1 draft pick of the Phoenix Suns last season, Macy is the picture of cool and poise as he guides the Wildcat offense. But even the Seminoles shook him up a little.
“I was surprised,” Macy said. “I thought it would be a tough game.”
With his 16 points, Macy was but one of five Wildcats in double figures.
“They have so much depth,” Florida State’s Williams said. “so many players they bring in and out.”
Looking back to the preparation for the game, Williams admitted he probably took the wrong course in getting his men ready to play.
