Barbara Jo Palmer assumed her position as FSU's Women's Athletic Director in 1977 with a total budget for the women's program of $163,000. In just five years, Palmer raised that number to over one
million dollars and gave FSU as strong a women's program as any school in the country.
While she was in her position, Florida State women won five national championships in softball (1981 and 1982), golf (1981) and track (1984-outdoor and 1985-indoor) and had numerous other top ten
finishes.
Recalling her years spent with the Athletic Department, Palmer said, "When I started here, my goal was to have a program that could offer talented athletes the best educationaland athletic experience
possible. I believe we have succeeded in attaining this goal." Palmer achived this goal and much more. She was a pioneer in elevating FSU women's programs to the status they enjoy today.
