It was the 1968-69 academic year when Dr. Frankie Hall, in her 20th year as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, was first approached by department head Ken Miller. There was a small group of women interested in starting a track & field team. As chair of the graduate program and in contact with all master's and doctoral students, Dr. Hall admittedly had no experience as a track & field coach, but accepted the position. Remember, there were no women coaches or competitive opportunities at tghat time. With Miller providing logistic and administrative direction and head men's coach Mike Lang willingly offering guidance to Dr. Hall and the nine original members of the inaugral team, the group went on to compete in five events, culminating with their appearance and 11th-place finish at the first sanctioned collegiate championship meet for women on record.

Dr. M. Frances (Frankie) Hall Obituary
Published in Tallahassee Democrat from June 3 to June 5, 2017.

Dr. M. Frances (Frankie) Hall, 92, an alumna of the Florida State College for Women and Professor Emerita of Florida State University, died on May 20, 2017 at her home in western North Carolina. Frankie earned a bachelor's degree as part of the last class to graduate from FSCW, and remained a lifelong Seminole fan. She went on to earn her MA And PhD degrees at Iowa State University and returned to FSU to serve for 20 years in the department of Physical Education, where she chaired the graduate program and coached the first women's track team at the university.

Following Frankie's tenure at FSU, she owned and directed Camp Illahee, a summer camp for girls in Brevard, NC. Her devotion to camping led her to serve 6 years on the Board of Directors of the American Camping Association, where she was instrumental in revising the standards used in accrediting youth camps.

After retiring in 1984, Frankie moved to Leicester, NC, and became an active volunteer, serving on the Boards of Directors of the Literacy Council of Buncombe County and Meals on Wheels. She was also a long-time contributor to the Health Adventure, where she was the recipient of the 1996 TAM Award for outstanding volunteer service.

Frankie traveled in 48 states and on six continents, and was a lover of nature, an avid golfer, beekeeper and skilled woodworker. She will be greatly missed by numerous friends, former students, counselors and campers who benefited from her wisdom and generosity.

Frankie is survived by her sister, Joyce Arnold of Jacksonville FL; nieces Paige Vereen French of Jacksonville and Robin Kendrick of Atlanta; nephews Randy Hall of Atlanta and Keith Hall of Jacksonville and their families. Her beloved sister Jene Hall (Sis) Vereen of Jacksonville, brothers Howard Hall of Hialeah and Ronnie Hall of Jacksonville, and niece Linda Hall of Ocala preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, August 13, 2017 at 2pm at Camp Illahee in Brevard, NC. In lieu of flowers, Frankie requested memorial contributions to either the FSU Foundation, 2010 Levy Ave., Bldg. B, Tallahassee, FL 32310 (for distribution to the Master Craftsman Program and/or the Heritage Protocol) OR to the Seminole Boosters at 225 University Center C, Suite C5100, Tallahassee, FL 32306. A donation to the Seminole Boosters will benefit the conference room dedicated to Coach Frankie Hall and sponsored by her 1969 track team.
