Former Florida State athletic director Bob Goin led the Seminoles into conference expansion, then did the same for Cincinnati.

Former Florida State and Cincinnati athletic director Bob Goin, who helped usher both programs into new conferences and launch million-dollar expansion projects, died suddenly of a heart attack on Saturday at the age of 83.

Goin had retired to Ponte Vedra Beach in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, and four children. One of his sons, Brian, is a past executive director of The Players Championship and past chairman of the Gator Bowl.

"This is a sad, sad day," former FSU baseball coach Mike Martin said. "Bob Goin was a man who had a tremendous influence on everyone at Florida State and above all, he never put anything before what was right."

"Bob played a huge role in the development of Florida State athletics as we know it today," FSU athletics director David Coburn told the Democrat. "He will be missed. Our prayers go out to Nancy and the family."

Goin was the FSU AD from 1990-1995, a time period in which the Seminoles won their first national championship in football under coach Bobby Bowden, went to the NCAA tournament four times in basketball and the College World Series each year in baseball.

But his biggest contribution to the school was overseeing the transition of being an independent in football and in the Metro Conference in other sports to the ACC in 1991.

The move kicked off the conference expansion era that changed the landscape of college sports.

"Bob was not afraid to see the future and put it on the front burner," Martin said.

Goin also helped start the Doak Campbell Stadium expansion that boosted seating by nearly 20,000 and added classrooms to the buildings wrapped around the stadium.

"Bob is probably the foundation of the present-day [FSU] athletic program," former FSU associate AD Andy Urbanic told the Democrat. "Not only was he a true leader, but he handled people the right way."

Goin later resigned his position at Florida State after being accused by a weekly newspaper in Tallahassee of using a contractor involved in the school's stadium expansion to install a new roof over his home. But an investigation by the Times-Union showed that Goin paid more than market price for the roof, and he was cleared of any wrongdoing by the Florida Ethics Commission.

Goin then became the athletic director at Cincinnati and led another program to conference expansion as the Bearcats moved from the Metro to the Big East. Goin also oversaw an $80 million expansion of athletic facilities.

Goin served on the NCAA Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet and the NCAA Football Bowl Certification Subcommittee.

He was inducted into the National Association of College Athletic Directors in 2013.

Goin, a native of Pennsylvania, is a 1959 graduate of Bethany College in West Virginia, then went on to coach football, basketball and baseball at his alma mater and serve in athletic administration for the next 16 years. He then served as an assistant AD at West Virginia and was the AD at California (Pa.) State College for two years.

Goin came to Florida State in 1981, where he served in several capacities. He was in charge of game-day operations for football, basketball and baseball and was the tournament director for seven NCAA baseball regionals.
